Foreign Policy During the Vietnam War
The United States became deeply involved in Vietnam during the 1960s largely due to America’s desire to assure that developing countries modernize as capitalist and democratic. Thus, American involvement began with economic and social support in South Vietnam. Yet slowly, throughout the presidencies of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, the goal of modernizing South Vietnamese society and containing communism became increasingly implemented by military means. Further, it seems clear that, regardless of how much effort the United States geared towards Vietnam, American defeat was inevitable. By Richard Nixon’s presidency, the initial modernization goals in Vietnam mattered only in so far as they could preserve American credibility. Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon all failed to realize that while U.S. time was limited in Vietnam, the North Vietnamese had all the time they needed to fight for the independence of their country. The South Vietnamese forces could not defend themselves and the United States had to withdraw eventually
Nurses\u27 Knowledge Related to Heart Failure Essentials
Heart Failure is a complex syndrome which continues to be a major health issue in the United States and worldwide. Strategies and educational interventions implemented by hospitals to reduce hospital admissions and readmissions for this costly chronic disease have not been consistently successful. Patient education is an important strategy for the management of HF to improve quality of life, optimize patient outcomes, and reduce the use of healthcare resources by reducing readmissions. The purpose of this program development was to increase nurses’ knowledge regarding HF education to be provided to HF patients prior to discharge from the acute care setting. A quasi-experimental program design with a pre and post-test intervention was performed on a 38 bed medical telemetry unit at RI Hospital a Level 1 trauma center in Providence, RI. Registered nurses were asked to complete a pre and post-test survey, Nurse Knowledge of Heart Failure by Albert et al (2002). Nine RNs out of thirty two (28.8%) agreed to participate and completed the pre-test, attended one of the HF education classes followed by completion of the post-test. Pre-tests scores ranged from 60-90 out of possible 100, with a mean score of 73.3%. Post-test scores ranged from 70-95 out of possible 100, with a mean score of 86.1%, an increase of almost 13%. These findings suggest that providing HF education can be successful in increasing nurses’ knowledge regarding HF education provided to HF patients prior to discharge from the acute care setting
Timelines of Oral Care and Early-Onset Ventilator Associated Pneumonia Prevention
Hospital-acquired infections, including ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality and associated with increased costs and length of stay (Chastre & Fagon, 2002; NNIS, 2004). Ventilator associated pneumonia is believed to primarily result from aspiration of oropharyngeal secretions around the endotracheal tube cuff into the lungs (Grap, Munro, Unoki, Hamilton, & Ward, 2012). A randomized control trial tested early application of oral chlorhexidine (CHG) on oral microbial flora and VAP in trauma patients and suggested that early (within 12 hours of intubation) application may reduce VAP rates in trauma patients (Grap, Munro, Hamilton, Elswick, Sessler & Ward, 2011). The VAP rate in a local Level 1 trauma center, 11-bed trauma intensive care unit (TICU) was 8.7 per 1000 device days, above the national average (NHSN, 2011). The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between the time of insertion of an endotracheal tube and first CHG application and early onset (within 72 hours of intubation) VAP. A retrospective chart review of the records of randomly selected adult intubated trauma patients hospitalized on the TICU was conducted. Collected data included: time of intubation; timing of CHG application; VAP occurrences; and length of intubation. Less than half (45.8%) of patients received early CHG application, and most (79.2%) were intubated in the emergency department (ED), suggesting that VAP prevention measures begin in the ED. Of the patients reviewed, five developed VAP; three occurred in patients who had received oral CHG within 12 hours of intubation. A CNS-driven collaboration with other disciplines and departments is essential to implement VAP prevention measures and provide comprehensive, quality care
The Evolution of Social Work Ethics: Bearing Witness
The evolution of ethical standards in social work, and conceptual frameworks for examining ethical issues, is among the most compelling developments in the history of the profession. Since the formal inauguration of social work in the late nineteenth century, the profession has moved from relatively simplistic and moralistic perspectives to conceptually rich analyses of ethical issues and ethical guidelines. This article examines the evolution of social work ethics from the profession’s earliest days and speculates about future challenges and directions
Isidorian Influences in Ælfric\u27s Preface to Genesis
In this article, I propose Isidore of Seville’s Etymologiae as a source for three passages in Ælfric’s Preface to Genesis. With these source identifications established, I further develop the argument to claim that Isidorian techniques are a key influence on Ælfric’s assumptions about biblical language, translation, and interpretation as reflected in the Preface. Such assumptions, in fact, inform the vernacular pedagogical project at the heart of the Preface as an introduction to his translation of Genesis into Old English
The Expositio in Epistolas Beati Pauli Ex Operibus S. Augustini by Florus in Strasbourg, BNU MS.0.309
The purpose of this article is to correct the catalogue description for Strasbourg, Bibliothéque Nationale et Universitaire MS.0.309. While the catalogue identifies the contents of the manuscript as a compilation of comments on Paul’s epistles collected by Bede, the work is actually a similar collection by Florus of Lyon. The article contains an overview of previous scholarship identifying and distinguishing these two collections, as well as a corrected description of the contents of Strasbourg 309 based on the author’s examination

Eye on Ethics: Elastic Boundaries in Social Work - Proceed with Caution
In some instances, it is virtually impossible for social workers to avoid dual relationships with current and former clients. Social workers who live and work in small communities, such as a military base in a remote location, or rural areas know how difficult it is to avoid dual relationships
