Development of an Education Program for Registered Nurses Related to the Use and Function of Mechanical Prophylaxis
Get PDFVenous thromboembolism events (VTE) are one of nine hospital-acquired events monitored by organizations, such as The Joint Commission, that are considered preventable when the proper safeguards are in place. Practice recommendations by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and The American College of Chest Physicians include adhering to pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapy for at risk patients. In patients with contraindications to pharmacological prophylaxis, mechanical therapy provides adequate protection against VTE when used correctly. Registered nurses within the acute care setting are key players in ensuring that mechanical therapy is implemented and maintained at the bedside. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to assess nurse understanding on the use and function of mechanical prophylaxis. The project included a pretest, educational program, and posttest design on a surgical unit at Rhode Island Hospital. The Logic Model Framework guided the quality improvement project. Twenty-one nurses completed the pretest (66%) and 21 attended the educational sessions and completed the posttest (66%). Pretest scores ranged from 2.4 to 4.2 out of a possible 5 points for each question, with a mean response rate of 3.6. In comparison, posttest scores ranged from 3.5 to 4.6, with a mean response rate of 4.3. The average posttest response rate increased by 0.7 points. Seventeen nurses completed a program evaluation (n=17; 60%). Three themes were derived after analysis of open ended responses by nurses from the program evaluation. Overall, the findings supported increased understanding on the use and function of mechanical prophylaxis by nurses after attending the educational program. Further research is needed to determine if incorporating this educational program in new hire orientation or developing a formal nursing policy on mechanical prophylaxis would increase nurse and patient compliance
Rendering Hypercomplex Fractals
Get PDFFractal mathematics and geometry are useful for applications in science, engineering, and art, but acquiring the tools to explore and graph fractals can be frustrating. Tools available online have limited fractals, rendering methods, and shaders. They often fail to abstract these concepts in a reusable way. This means that multiple programs and interfaces must be learned and used to fully explore the topic. Chaos is an abstract fractal geometry rendering program created to solve this problem. This application builds off previous work done by myself and others [1] to create an extensible, abstract solution to rendering fractals. This paper covers what fractals are, how they are rendered and colored, implementation, issues that were encountered, and finally planned future improvements. Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Emergency Department Nurses
Get PDFIndividuals employed in healthcare services are exposed daily to a variety of health and safety hazards which include psychosocial risks, such as those associated with work-related stress. Nursing is the largest group of health professionals in the healthcare system. Work-related stress has been associated with substandard quality and safety of care, poor health status, decreased quality of life and compromised safety among staff members (Christodoulou-Fella, Middleton, Papathanassoglou, & Karanikola, 2017).
Secondary traumatic stress (STS) is exacerbated in health professionals who are continuously confronted and care for patients suffering traumatic injuries and are critically ill, while experiencing emotional disruption themselves, thus becoming indirect victims of the trauma, they care for (Christodoulou-Fella et al.). The purpose of this study was to explore the prevalence and severity of traumatic symptoms experienced by nurses working in the emergency department (ED) secondary to repetitive exposure of distressing events. The author utilized a 17-item survey to measure symptoms associated with indirect exposure to traumatic events due to profession. Two open-ended questions were added to better understand nurses’ views on STS. Results indicated that nurses in the ED are experiencing little to moderate symptoms of STS. Majority of participants indicated they have experienced more than one item asked in the questionnaire at least occasionally or often. A response rate of over 50% of participants specified staff debriefing shortly after being exposed to a traumatic event to be beneficial to reduce symptoms of STS. Replication of this project on a larger scale could serve as the foundation for establishing new policies regarding STS and the need for staff support services or programs

An Andon system is one of the principal elements of the Jidoka quality-control method pioneered by the Toyota Corporation. It gives automobile manufacturing workers the ability, permission, and encouragement to stop production when a defect is found, and immediately call for assistance. Common reasons for manual activation of the Andon are a part shortage, a manufacturing defect, tool malfunction, or the existence of a safety problem. Work is stopped until a solution has been found

Social workers understand that a client\u27s disabling anxiety symptoms may stem from her job loss resulting from a weak economy. In short, social workers understand that they must explore and address the structural and environmental challenges that cause trauma in people\u27s lives

Cada uno de estos juega un papel importante en la descripción de lo que pasó en estas luchas feroces en las que los árabes terminaron derrotados y sin el territorio que había sido su patria por casi ochocientos años.
