In an effort to curb healthcare spending, ERAS is one way to reduce hospital- associated costs. Originally developed in Denmark, ERAS is a patient-centered initiative that aims to reduce the body’s stress response, leading to improved patient outcomes and decreased hospital lengths of stay. Betty Neuman’s Systems Model was used as a theoretical framework to enrich the understanding of enhanced recovery and how it works to improve patient care
The Impact of Parental Presence on the Anxiety Experienced by Pediatric Patients During Anesthesia
Get PDFThis integrative review compared the use and impact of parental presence on the anxiety experienced by pediatric patients during anesthesia. Every year, millions of children receive anesthesia and experience separation from their parents which can cause anxiety due to unfamiliar situations, environments, or people. A search was completed using electronic databases, including Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and Pubmed. The PRISMA flowchart was utilized, guided by inclusion and exclusion criteria, to identify and document the six studies included in the review. Studies were critically appraised using Polit & Beck\u27s critical analysis tables to evaluate the quality of the studies included in the review. The primary outcome examined was anxiety. A cross study analysis was performed to examine the reviewed literature for common themes. Findings showed mixed results in the overall anxiety levels when pediatric patients were accompanied to the operating room with a parent. Parental presence is a strategy that can be used to reduce anxiety and improve satisfaction in pediatric patients requiring anesthesia. More research is recommended. Overall, this integrative review supported parental presence and distraction techniques to reduce anxiety during anesthesia in pediatric patients
The Rights of Queer Children
Get PDFThe ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (crc) has long been hailed as a major event in the realisation of children’s human rights, combining the need for protection with a desire to grant agency through recognition of the evolving capacities of the child. Yet the idea of children’s agency as articulated in the crc excluded sexual identity and expression, and ushered in an incomplete emancipation for lgbtiq children; children who are gender non-conforming; and children whose sexual expression otherwise conflicts with heterosexuality – hereafter queer children. I argue that while the crc granted children agency in terms of rights to expression, thought and conscience, it denied children sexual agency. Queer children’s political agency is intimately connected to sexual identity and agency, because unlike their heterosexual counterparts, queer children’s identity and expression is sexualised while, at the same time, they are excluded from adult, identity-based movements
The Effect of Anesthesia on the Developing Brain
Get PDFDamage caused by administering general anesthetics to the developing brain in young children and pregnant mothers is of concern among practicing anesthesia providers. Studies using young rodents and non-human primates have shown that animals are susceptible to neurodegeneration when exposed to high concentrations of general anesthesia. Randomized control trials using rodents as subjects used behavioral and histological experiments to determine the adverse effects of general anesthetics including the inhalation agents desflurane, isoflurane, and sevoflurane in addition to intravenous ketamine. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the current literature to determine the effects these anesthetics pose on rodent subjects and how that translates into the human population. This systematic review was constructed using both PRISMA and ARRIVE as guidelines. A literature review was conducted and data was collected from each study. A cross-study analysis was created through data collected from each study by the author of this systematic review. The randomized control trials reviewed provide evidence that the types of inhalation and intravenous anesthesia agents studied can affect the developing brains of rodents. Anesthesia providers can use these results as a guide when administering anesthesia to infants, young children, and gravid mothers, however, more studies focusing on the long-term effects these agents have on children are warranted

This shift to an informational capitalism places value on immaterial labor, such as a service, knowledge, and communication.3 Because of this change, industrial careers have vanished, along with the security that once came with them. Material labor has become essentially disposable in the US, due to outsourcing and automation. The American Dream has transformed dramatically; no longer can a typical family support itself with one income. Today, working-class and middle-class finances have become increasingly more precarious. As the relationship between money and Americans changes, so does its filmic representation. Thus, post-1970s films are particularly interesting places to follow the money

Postnatal Support Services for Intended Parents: A Gap Analysis
Get PDFThrough discussion with a larger audience of perinatal professional colleagues and dissemination of the project findings, the expected outcomes of this DNP project include an increased awareness within the perinatal community of a gap in postnatal support services for intended parents. Awareness of a gap in services will start the conversation among perinatal professionals regarding what services should be put into place to provide the appropriate supports. On a national level, expected outcomes include awareness of the need for postnatal services for intended parents. Oral presentation of the findings and dissemination through publication is planned. The dissemination will describe the gap in services and the plan for population specific postnatal support services, providing a platform for dialogue at the local and national level. Most importantly, the increase in awareness and design of appropriate services will help intended parents on their transition to parenthood and potentially decrease the risk of difficulties with the transition, including potential postnatal depression
