Rhode Island College

This article discussed the problem of giving subject access to works of art. We survey both concept-based and content-based access by computers and by index/catalogers respectively, as well as issues of interoperability, database and indexer consistency and cataloging standards. The authors, both of whom are trained art historians, question attempts to mystify fine art subject matter by the creation of clever library science systems that are executed by the naive. Only when trained art historians and knowledgeable catalogers are finally responsible for providing subject access to works of art, will true interoperability and consistency happen

moral, religious, and political opposition to GLBT rights and the 
movement's responses. 
Workshop II (Faculty Center, South Dining Room) 
Through discussion and interactive exercises, Youth Pride will 
inform and explore strategies for reducing homophobia, empha-
sizing the importance of the school setting. 
About the Dialogue on Diversity Committee 
Rhode Island College recognizes that diversity is a fundamental 
strength of our community ahd the larger society. As an institution 
of higher education, it is committed to promoting an understand-
ing and appreciation of the differing backgrounds and beliefs of 
individuals in the College community as well as the larger com-
munity of which it is a part. To this end, President John Nazarian 
established the Rhode Island College Dialogue on Diversity Com-
mittee and charged it with providing leadership and coordination 
of activities in furtherance of the cause. The committee, which has 
been in operation since 1995, is comprised of representatives from 
faculty, staff, and students. Members take the lead in encouraging 
all of the College community to reach beyond tolerance to a genu-
ine understanding and appreciation of each other and our diverse 
strengths and contributions. 
Since its inception, the committee has organized events that ex-
pand the discussion of diversity on campus. It sponsors two major 
events: (1) the Dialogue on Diversity Spring Lecture and (2) Prom-
ising Practices, a day-long conference on diversity issues for present 
and future teachers. More recently, the committee has sponsored 
forums for the discussion of other significant related issues. 
The Dialogue on Diversity Committee welcomes newcomers-fac-
ulty, staff, and students-to its meetings. If you are interested in
