Archaism and the Critique of Caravaggio in the Religious Paintings of Hendrick ter Brugghen
Get PDFDuring his twelve-year career, the Utrecht painter Hendrick ter Brugghen (1588-1629) embedded northern archaic content into works otherwise remarkable for their aspirations to contemporaneity and cosmopolitanism. Although ter Brugghen\u27s archaism has been long noted, its study has been arrested at its diagnosis. My dissertation considers these elements as having an interpretive as well as a formal impact. Ter Brugghen\u27s secular oeuvre is sizable, but archaism occurs uniquely in his religious works. This specificity of application not only connects these major works to the complex religious climate of Utrecht, well known for its confessional diversity after 1581, but also sheds light on broad questions of the function and form of devotional images in art after the Reformation

Chayanov\u27s Rule and School Reform
Get PDFAlexander V. Chayanov was a Russian economist and rural sociologist killed in Stalin\u27s purges around 1938. He authored a theory of peasant economy that was quite influential in Western economic anthropology since translation of his major work in 1966. Marshall Sahlins successfully used his theory in Stone Age Economics and introduced Chayanov\u27s rule : In the community of domestic producing groups, the greater the relative working capacity of the household the less its members work. Peasant societies have certain level of standard consumption determined by what a family with the lowest worker/consumer ratio can attain. In other words, a peasant family will work harder if they have many small children to feed, but when these children grow up and begin to participate in production, the economic activity of the household will taper off, even though the opportunity for creating and accumulating more wealth will be unused

The following odd fact was noticed: when a mechanical model of a suspension bridge (linear near equilibrium but allowed to slacken at large distance in one direction) is shaken with a low-frequency periodic force, several different periodic responses can result, many with high-frequency components
