White House Tourists
Tourists visiting the White House in Washington D.C. photographed by Chet Smolski in the mid-1980s. Until the early twentieth century, The White House was open to the public, but has since been restricted due to security concerns. However, free and public tours of the house, a tradition started by Thomas Jefferson, continue to the present in times of peace.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1396/thumbnail.jp
Union Trust Company Building (Detail)
The building looks like a skyscraper due to its slender massing. The client for this building was bank president Marsden J. Perry. Building was built by architects Stone, Carpenter & Willson. A 12-story, brick and stone sheathed, steel frame office building. Finished with a melange Renaissance and late Georgian Revival detailing. Corinthian column entrance, bas-relief figures of an Indian and a Puritan, carved by Daniel Chester French, recline on their elbows. First skyscraper in Providence to use the classical base-shaft-capital organization for tall buildings. Refurbished in 1981, additions and renovations were made in 1920, 1928, and in 1964. Greater Providence Trust Company acquired the building in 1982 for use of its banking headquarters and undertook careful restoration of this historic structure.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1255/thumbnail.jp

Digital Commons as an Educational Tool
This paper explores the educational use of an Institutional Repository at Rhode Island College. The focus is on selected units of our College\u27s Digital Commons and the students who have helped to make it a reality. The Chet Smolski Collection, comprising an Image Gallery and a table for Op-Ed texts, is joined by relational portals that are not yet operative but approaching partial functionality. We claim that there has been real educational benefit for the students by using them to help construct an IR. Our educational approach of letting students teach each other can be of value to other Colleges and Universities creating an IR using library students. Giving the students the trust they deserve gives them a sense of ownership in the project and creates a congenial and collegiate atmosphere in which they can shine
Digital Brushstrokes
Digital painting enables the traditional painter to paint using new technology without experience in traditional painting. But few digital painters are able to transcend the technology to create aesthetically pleasing compositions that address traditional design elements and content. This thesis examines digital painting\u27s place i an evolving digital culture by focusing on six digital painters, the digital audience and how new media theory applies
A Tale of Two City Schools
The study examined how leaders in both schools define successful reform, perceive high-stakes testing, perceive a need to raise student achievement, and implement reforms in response to high-stakes testing. The study combined qualitative interview data and survey methodology to examine differing perceptions and to identify the factors most strongly associated with different levels of reform success
Women in Law Enforcement: Subverting Sexual Harassment through Social Bonds
Female law enforcement officers who have strong social bonds with their colleagues can reduce the effect that sexual harassment has on job satisfaction. We test social bond theory to examine the relationship between sexual harassment and job satisfaction from a sample of n=109 active duty male and female police and correctional officers. Law enforcement personnel are thought to be particularly vulnerable to stressors on the job, like sexual harassment, but they can significantly benefit from strong departmental and colleague support. With some progress toward gender equity, this study shows that female officers still face barriers that are linked to this predominantly male dominated career

The Effect of Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBTS) on Elementary School Student Academic Performance and Behaviors
Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is a school-wide management program designed to improve student academic performance by providing a positive behavioral environment. Research was conducted to determine if there were any direct correlation between proper and consistent implementation of the PBIS framework and an overall increased student achievement on assessments such as the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP). Test results were examined and 12 interviews were conducted with principals, teachers, and PBIS coordinators from six different Rhode Island public schools. The results demonstrated that a majority of the schools have improved over the last few years on the NECAP testing and positive student behavior as well. However, PBIS is fairly new within Rhode Island. It is still too early to tell whether or not this change in academics and behavior is a direct effect of PBIS
Eaton Street, Triple Deckers
A view of Eaton St. triple-decker houses, just before the intersection of Douglas Avenue (Rt. 7). These houses were, oftentimes, built in groups of three or more and appeared in rows lining street after street. Eventually, the presence of these houses became a cause for concern. They were cheaply built and left little space between buildings causing problems with the efficency of plumbing. As a result of this, the General Committee on Improved Housing in Providence was elected by the Providence Chamber of Commerce in order to fix these issues.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1181/thumbnail.jp
