The Role of the University of Hawaii Laboratory School in an NSF GK-12 Training Grant
Research and training are important roles of laboratory schools. Whereas traditional laboratory schools have primarily served in the training of education and psychology students, the University Laboratory School (ULS) at the University of Hawaii-Manoa has been a partner in a National Science Foundation training grant that targets building teaching and communication skills of science graduate students. The training component of the grant is augmented by demonstration and practice in the “safe” environment of ULS. Further, the flexibility provided by the school’s research mission has allowed graduate students to develop and test pilot projects for export to other schools with more constrained curricula. Recommendations for successful partnering of laboratory schools in similar efforts include putting laboratory school faculty in principle investigator (PI) roles, reaching out to community groups, public and private schools, and disseminating data-driven results of partnerships
The Female Singing Voice
A study of perceived changes that may occur to the voice within the menstrual cycle The study examines factors that may affect women\u27s voices and examines if there is a change occurring in the female singing voice during the premenstrual phase of the menstrual cycle. Journals and questionnaires of premenstrual vocal and physiological symptoms of seven female voice students were used during two menstrual cycles. Vocal Teacher journals were also used to see if relationships could be found. The median score for various variables were calculated to produce graphs for visual comparison looking for relationships between days of the menstrual cycle, physiological symptoms, and vocal symptoms. The results of this study showed that there was no change to the female singing voice within the menstrual cycle
Evaluation of the Patient Sitter Assessment Tool
Maintaining the safety of hospitalized patients is a top priority in healthcare. Evidence has demonstrated that most patient injuries associated with falls are preventable. Despite major, sustained national initiatives related to fall prevention, fall rates continue to be problematic in acute care settings. Patient sitters are often used to observe/and or assist those that are identified as at a high risk for falls; however evidence to support the effectiveness of this intervention in reducing fall risk is lacing. A committee charged with revising the sitter policy in an acute care facility discovered inconsistencies by nurses when assessing this patient population. A literature review revealed common contributing factors to a change in cognition and delirium, both having strong relationship to patient falls. A Patient Sitter Assessment tool was developed and pilot tested on a 27 bed medical surgical telemetry unit. The purpose of this process improvement project was to determine the ease of use, utility, and staff satisfaction of the tool. Evaluation from 12 staff nurses who participated were favorable. Overall, nurses indicated satisfaction with the tool, and provided feedback that more education on delirium and contributing factors that impact cognition was needed. It is expected that use of the tool will result in earlier detection and treatment of change in cognitive status and improved sitter use. Implications and recommendations are presented and discussed
Doing Science Their Way
From the perspective of social cultural anthropology employing the field research techniques of ethnography this study focuses on the experiences and perspectives of sixth grade girls in a moderately-sized East Coast city as they construct meaning through active engagement i a science classroom. The study analyzes the ways in which girls change roles and incorporate social interaction during science activities to create their own unique engagement in science
View of Providence East Side from State Street & a view of the Cathedral of St. John
Here is a view of Providence’s East Side with three of the oldest churches in the city in the College Hill neighborhood. To the left of the image is a view of the Cathedral of St. John, which is located on North Main Street. This church was built by John Holden Greene in 1810. Also seen is the First Baptist Church also located on North Main Street. This church was built between 1774 and 1775. The First Unitarian Church, located on Benevolent St., is also seen in this shot. This church was also built by John Holden Greene between 1815 and 1816.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1108/thumbnail.jp
Charles A. Hopkins House
Charles A. Hopkins House, built in the French Modern Gothic style. The two units appear as different halves of an asymmetrical composition. The simulated structure enframes openings and decorative panels. The house was built for an insurance agent.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1125/thumbnail.jp
Abandoned house for sale
An abandoned home for sale on Block Island. The only town on Block Island is New Shoreham, which at the 2000 census had a population of 1,010 people. Of those, about 7.9% live below the poverty line.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1325/thumbnail.jp
Boston: South End
The Boston neighborhood known as the South End (see notes) was once marshland that was filled in the 1840s as a solution to overcrowding in the Back Bay area. Renowned architect Charles Bulfinch created a plan for the South End neighborhood’s architecture that consisted of connected brick townhouses. The homes vary in style and detail, but have consistent elements such as iron railings, bay windows, and brick sidewalks.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1403/thumbnail.jp
