Get PDFFollowing on their introduction to the People of Color in Library & Information Science (POC in LIS) Summit during the virtual showcase portion of last year\u27s SCELCapalooza, Summit organizers return this year in person for a deeper dive into the background, context, and lasting impacts from the POCinLIS Summit 2023.This talk will center the experiences of four Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) academic librarians who conceived, planned, and executed the one-day POCinLIS Summit for BIPOC information workers in 2018 and 2023, and an online version in 2021. As a counterspace unaffiliated with a professional organization or traditional LIS conference spaces, the POCin LIS Summit sought to amplify and bolster BIPOC siloed in their work while supporting a network of POC information workers for future collaborations and self-care practices.See the POCinLIS Summit website for more information about the summit mission and past iterations

The Importance of Urban Eco-gardens for Biodiversity and Human Sustainability: A Case Study from Palestine
Get PDFThe situation in Palestine is of concern where global threats of climate change, overexploitation, habitat destruction, invasive species, and pollution are compounded by occupation and conflict. Thus, almost 1/3rd of vascular plant species are rare and over 50 are listed as endangered or rare based on their abundance and presence in grids studied earlier. Here, we describe the development of a conservation botanic garden that works via research, education, and direct in situ and ex situ conservation of plant species. The garden now boasts 381 species of vascular plants (63 are rare). The team scientifically and selectively introduced some rare and endemic species, developed educational modules, and engaged the community in all aspects of planning and growth of this garden. It has acted as a model for threatened and protected areas in the state of Palestine, as well as becoming a national oasis for both wildlife and humans. The lessons learned from this experience include: 1) principles of minimal intervention in eco-friendly ways producing zones of permaculture and gardening towards conservation (ex situ and in situ conservation), while allowing botanic garden functionality, 2) involvement of staff, volunteers, experts, and community in education and conservation efforts, 3) value of research in plants and animals for integrated ecosystem management. The outcome of this work is a maximally utilitarian garden for areas like education, direct conservation, research, and human satisfaction whilst ensuring long-term sustainability in a nascent state in the midst of a difficult political situation

“Middle Schoolers are Just This Special Kind of Human Being”: Middle School Teacher Perspectives on Creating Hope for their Students and Themselves
Get PDFAnxiety and depression have increased for adolescent youth, particularly since the pandemic. For certain students, this anxiety and depression connects to trauma because of inequity and bias in schools. This qualitative study examined successful urban middle school teachers and their perspectives on conditions they created for hope in their classrooms and ways they created hope for themselves. Eight middle school teachers who taught humanities shared their insights through semi-structured interviews. Findings aligned with pedagogical practices the teachers used that centered hope and voice for students: culturally responsive practices, relational practices, and justice-oriented practices. These specific teachers cared deeply about their students and worked to create classrooms that were safe and grounded in community. Participants also cultivated specific personal practices as a way to remain hopeful
