No full textThis study explores the experiences of three Networked Improvement Communities (NICs) within mathematics departments as they work to critically transform their introductory mathematics programs. Drawing on the framework of dominant and critical axes of equity, we identify three key tensions experienced by the NICs: identity neutrality versus identity centrality, power over versus power with, and students as novices versus students as experts. These tensions are framed as productive enactments of working to change systems from within, highlighting the challenges and opportunities inherent in navigating the liminal space of nepantla. We argue that engaging with these tensions is crucial for fostering critical transformations and offer recommendations for leveraging the roles of identity, power, and student partnership to promote more equitable and inclusive mathematics education environments
The (Anarchic) Gift of \u3ci\u3eGelassenheit\u3c/i\u3e: On an Undeveloped Motif in Derrida\u27s \u3ci\u3eDonner le temps II\u3c/i\u3e
Get PDFIn his recently published Donner le temps II, Derrida raises, but does not develop, the possibility that Heidegger\u27s notion of Gelassenheit (‘releasement’, ‘letting-be’) might escape the economic confines of exchange, debt, and repayment and therefore qualify as a pure gift. In this paper, I explore this possibility, explaining that Gelassenheit would have to be understood, first, not primarily as a human comportment but at the level of being itself, second, beyond appropriation, and third, as ‘without why’. If Heidegger\u27s focus on appropriation in ‘Time and Being’ remains entangled in the economy of exchange (as Derrida insinuates in the final session of Donner le temps II), Heidegger\u27s anarchic treatment of ‘letting’ (laisser, Lassen) in the final session of his 1969 seminar in Le Thor opens instead onto a ‘pure giving’ (pur donner, reines Geben)

Cantos VII (he/him/his), recorded on April 19, 2024, discusses the value of education of the whole person (Cura Personalis) instilled in him at Loyola Marymount University, mentorship he received in the Political Science department, his experiences with diversity on campus, navigating college with a disability, and receiving the Stanley Chan award. At the time of this interview, Olegario was 53 years old and resided in West Covina, California. He attended Loyola Marymount University beginning in Fall 1988 and was a member of the Loyola Marymount University graduating Class of 1992. At the time of this interview, Olegario worked in the United States Department of Education Office of Civil Rights and was an elected official on the West Covina City Council. In 1992, he received the Stanley Chan Award from Loyola Marymount University\u27s Political Science department for demonstrating superior academic achievement, outstanding service to the University, and commitment to Judeo-Christian values. No full textA feature-length thriller screenplay studying the homeless epidemic across the United States. Francisco Serras is a formerly homeless man, due to his constant drinking and poor upbringing. While he wanted a better life for himself, he never had an opportunity until his friend, Roger, was accepted into a job program for the unhoused. Unfortunately, Roger passed away before he could begin, which gave Francisco his shot. He stole Roger’s identity, sobered up and has been working under a pseudonym ever since. His former friends, Neil and Luis, are disgusted by him, but Francisco believes he has the right to look out for himself and not stay out on the streets. He works at Accommodation Real Estate, an apartment management company. He discovers his real name on a lease and investigates this clerical error to ensure his real identity is not leaked to his employer. However, the more he investigates the more he puts his own life on the line as he’s on the run from both assassins and the law, at one point resulting in the death of his best friend, Neil. He uncovers that the company which saved him from poverty is the same one behind the conspiracy and it goes deeper than Francisco could have imagined. This sends Francisco back to abusing alcohol and living out on the streets until Luis helps him sober up. Francisco realizes that looking out for others, rather than yourself, is the only way forward and uses this newfound knowledge to take down the forces suppressing the city
