College, Career, and Course Access: A Selected Annotated Bibliography for English Learner Research, Policy, and Practice

    No full text
College, Career, and Course Access: A Selected Annotated Bibliography for English Learner Research, Policy, and Practice is comprised of 13 annotations from recent and seminal literature regarding educational practices that impact the opportunities available to English Learners’ (ELs) in secondary schools and beyond. These annotations build on the annotations regarding college, career, and course access in CEEL’s 2022 annotated bibliography, Ensuring Equity and Excellence for English Learners: An Annotated Bibliography for Research, Policy, and Practice (Center for Equity for English Learners, 2022) to include publications from 2022-2025. This selected annotated bibliography serves as a resource for researchers, policymakers, educators, and advocates who are working for equity and excellence for ELs. The contributors provide a comprehensive selection of works focused on research, practice, and theory. The annotations include a broad range of sources, including empirical and theoretical research articles, books, book chapters, governmental documents, professional magazines, monographs, and technical reports. In order to provide additional information for readers, each annotation includes: (1) the source description (e.g., book, journal article, report), (2) type of source (e.g., empirical, guidance, theoretical), and (3) keywords.https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/ceel_annotatedbibliographies/1004/thumbnail.jp

    Dreams To Reality

Beneath the shade of the trees, I reflect on the weight of my family’s dreams and the determination it takes to pursue a degree. The clear blue skies and open spaces remind me that possibilities are just as boundless, even when the roads feel steep. Here, amidst the peace and beauty I find the strength to strive as a First-Generation Latina student

I share a dream with my family. The dream of graduating from college, getting a good job, and living a better life. A life where we won’t be financially tied down. I am now attending Loyola Marymount University and pursuing a degree in Animation. I’m the first in my family to pursue a degree in Film & Television, and even though I can’t help the thoughts that I should be doing something more “impactful,” I know that it’s my passion and that it is the combined efforts of my family and those who have helped me, that led me here. Animation is the impactful tool I intend to use to share our stories of doubt, love, and perseverance

Multiple stressors effects on the physiological performance of Mytilus trossulus

    No full text
Mytilus galloprovincialis and M. trossulus co-occur and hybridize along set biogeographical ranges of temperature and salinity along the Pacific coast, USA. However, the role of physiological traits in mussel distribution remains poorly understood. We investigated metabolic rate, antioxidant activity (superoxide dismutase, catalase), oxidative damage (malondialdehyde content, MDA), and clearance rate of M. trossulus under multiple stressors: 7 days of hyposalinity (20, 28, 34 ppt), followed by an acute heat shock (17, 20, 25 ◦C). We found a significant effect of temperature on metabolic rate, an interaction effect on antioxidant activity, and MDA, and independent temperature and salinity effects on clearance rate. Additionally, we compared thermal performance and Hsp70 relative protein abundance between M. trossulus and M. galloprovincialis. M. galloprovincialis displayed approximately 10 ◦C higher thermal optimum and upper critical limits, consistent with observed Hsp70 abundance levels. Therefore, our study suggests species-specific physiological responses to multiple stressors may connect thermal limits and observed spatial demography of these congeners

Fewer Filings: The Impact of Minimum Wage Laws on Consumer Bankruptcies

    No full text
Minimum wage laws are a common policy tool to improve economic well-being. This paper examines the impact of minimum wage increases on one measure of financial distress: consumer bankruptcy filing rates. Leveraging county-level data by quarter and employing a stacked event study analysis, it finds that a ten percent increase in the minimum wage reduces the consumer bankruptcy filing rate by 3.6 percent. The analysis suggests that changes in asset and debt accumulation play a key role in driving this effect. There is no evidence supporting the hypothesis that minimum wage laws impact bankruptcy rates through disemployment effects

Beyond the Flames: Housing Justice and Rebuilding after the Wildfires

The speakers for this symposium explored the intersection of housing justice and the legal and policy obstacles encountered in rebuilding efforts in Los Angeles following the devastating wildfires. The wildfires burned more than 55,000 acres. That\u27s approximately the size of Los Angeles city. Destroyed over 16,251 structures and has claimed at least 29 lives. These fires were the most catastrophic in all of Los Angeles County\u27s history. The speakers discussed the challenges faced by displaced communities amid ongoing housing shortages, as well as the broader implications for housing policy and zoning. The conversation examined how attorneys, policy makers and the community can use legal tools to promote resilience, address systemic inequities and advance community driven solutions for long term recovery. This symposium took a deeper look into how lawyers can help rebuild not just homes but communities

Shaping a Wellness-Oriented Culture: A Mixed-Methods Exploration of the Mental Health Training and Stigma Reduction among College Seminarians

    No full text
Mental health is vital to seminarians\u27 holistic development, playing a crucial role in their personal growth and pastoral readiness. Equipping seminarians with mental health training enhances their human formation and addresses stigma, creating a foundation for more compassionate and effective ministry. The study utilized an explanatory research design with 11 college seminarians as the participants. The study reveals that mental health training significantly improved seminarians\u27 knowledge, awareness, and beliefs, leading to a more supportive and informed approach to mental well-being. Seminarians transitioned from initial skepticism to active mental health advocacy, recognizing the importance of psychological support alongside spiritual care. The findings emphasize the role of structured education in reducing stigma and equipping individuals with the skills needed to support themselves and others. This shift highlights the potential for mental health education to create lasting change, fostering a more compassionate and wellness-oriented culture within pastoral communities
