A Catholic College Newspaper as a Research Instrument in an Oral History Project

    No full text
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/asir/vol2/iss1/10/thumbnail.jpgA student produced and edited newspaper is necessarily a grassroots production, with an all volunteer staff. Student produced newspapers can be a potential source of primary, historical information about student life on a college campus, providing useful insight and data about students’ perspectives and experiences while attending college. However a central problem of the print copies and printed or microfilmed back-files of these types of collections is the limited means for discovering data, and devising the best means in which to describe the contents. Saint Leo University is a Catholic University in the Southern United States, originally founded by Benedictine monks in 1889. It became a two year college in 1965, and the student newspaper printed its first column in 1967. The 1960s and 1970s were a time of social change in America and in the Catholic Church, which did not leave this community of faith unmoved nor unchanged. The role which the newspaper played during this time was unique, providing a voice for the students, faculty, and other community members, which assisted in informing its audience of events and issues while nurturing a faith-based community. The recently digitized collection of this newspaper preserves and makes available an exceptional collection of voices and perspectives from an earlier time in this institution’s history. This paper will discuss the digitized collection, its search features, and as it’s potential as a historical research tool in an institutional oral history project, as well as the intersection of information and religious perspectives made available for examination.</p

Hymnary.org: The Use of a New Database in Hymnology

    No full text
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/asir/vol2/iss1/8/thumbnail.jpgHymnary.org is a large hymnological database that provides information about thousands of hymnals and millions of hymn instances. It has media files and nearly 2,000 scanned hymnals. The authors conducted a user survey between August 1, 2011 and January 31, 2012 to determine a typical user profile and user expectations of Hymnary.org. Respondents were asked to provide information about themselves, their interest in hymnody, how they found Hymnary.org, how they used it, and whether the database met their information needs. The survey revealed that frequent users are most commonly involved with worship planning, followed by users with an academic interest in hymnological information. The primary entry point to Hymnary.org was a search for a specific hymnal, and users were interested in both text and tune information. Users show a need to understand the limitations of copyright, and to be made aware of the commercial hymn arrangements available via Hymnary.org.</p

The Fitness and Wellness IQ: Measuring College Student Learning in Campus Recreation Fitness and Wellness Programs

    No full text
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/node/9980/8870-thumbnail.jpgCollegiate campus recreation departments are held to increasingly higher levels of accountability, particularly as to whether recreational programs and activities have impact on student learning. This pioneering study found that students who participated in selected fitness and wellness programs offered by a certain four-year, public institution of higher education in the Mid-west scored significantly higher (t= 3.865, α = .000, sd = 2.68) on an exam (the Fitness and Wellness IQ) designed to test their knowledge and understanding of appropriate fitness and wellness practices. Certain demographic categories (gender, age, and residence) produced significant differences in mean scores. These findings have important ramifications for campus recreation departments, divisions of student affairs, and institutions of higher education in general based on the impact on student learning from traditionally non-academic institutional programming.</p
