The Nature and Consequences of Informational Differences in Exoteric vs. Esoteric Spiritual Practices
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/asir/vol2/iss1/2/thumbnail.jpgTwo broadly different approaches to spiritual practice exist within virtually every religious tradition. Though the specific characterization and evaluation of these different practices vary among authors, their general nature is reasonably clear. The exoteric path represents the more conventional approach to religion involving ongoing participation in the practices and activities of an established religious community (church, mosque, synagogue, temple, etc.). Alternatively, the esoteric path tends to be more individualistic and mystical in orientation. Within a given tradition, the two approaches are never in opposition to each other but can nonetheless involve complex, bivalent inter-relations. The present paper examines these two forms of practice in terms of their strategies of information flow. It is primarily concerned with the amount and type of information each style of practice generates and processes relative to a small set of general but relevant scenarios. It shows that each results in highly characteristic differences in the generation and processing of information. In addition, the paper argues that important consequences of these differences concern how they both reflect and impact the practitioner’s religious faith, their sense of self, and their relation to their world.</p
Documenting Religious Organizations: Theory and Practice
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/asir/vol2/iss1/3/thumbnail.jpgIn creating an appraisal policy to support the documentation of a church, synagogue or other religious movement, an archives must decide whether to gloss over the religious aspect of its mission and seek to document itself as an organization which happens to be religious, or to attempt to engage the messy question of belief to document the faith group itself. This paper will examine the problems and possibilities of appraisal in religious archives. I will first discuss the development of the last forty years of appraisal theory regarding religious archives, and then examine how that literature has been applied at the Archives of the Episcopal Church, a religious repository in Austin, Texas. Finally, I will discuss how a repository could combine the implications of both the literature and its application at the two repositories to create or update an appraisal policy that would support the full and faithful documentation of a religious group, using the newly-established archives of the Austin’s Congregation Agudas Achim as an example.</p

Transition Planning for Secondary Students with Disabilities (4th edition)
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/facultybooks/17/thumbnail.jpgFor Transition, Secondary Special Education, and Career Education/Vocational Transition courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. A comprehensive and practical guide to understanding the varied transition needs of students with disabilities–and a look at the potential options and career paths in transition education. Teachers, and professionals in all areas of transition, get the support they need to develop and implement transition activities and programs for students with disabilities in this comprehensive, practical resource. The authors describe the varied transition needs readers are likely to encounter in their work, and provide a succinct look at the potential options and career paths available. In this edition, a new organization and four new chapters improve the focus and readability for the student new to transition. The text organizes topics around four essential elements of transition and a backward planning process. Transition planning is now introduced early to anchor subsequent learning.</p

A Systematic Literature Review Model for Religion
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/asir/vol2/iss1/4/thumbnail.jpgTraditional literature reviews (TLR) are found in all disciplines including religion. In TLR a research question is chosen, resources from the literature are identified that have information relevant to the question, and one uses information from the resources to address the TLR question. Such reviews can give writers and readers background knowledge, help them get up to speed, or help to set the stage for further research. In academia, projects supported by TLR include student papers, theses and dissertations, grants, and articles. In a religious community, sermons and religious instruction might be served by TLR. The information explosion is ongoing, and so TLR clearly have value. In addition, however, in the health and social sciences the "systematic review" (SR) is now widely viewed as an important alternative for those doing and reading literature reviews. Two reasons are frequently given for why the conclusions in SR receive special attention: 1. comprehensive literature searching is used (important for limiting bias), and 2. detailed/transparent reporting of methods are used (making replication and evaluation of methods possible). SR can increase confidence in conclusions of reviews.</p
Fear Not: Facebook, Information and Extensions of Local Church Ministry
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/asir/vol2/iss1/9/thumbnail.jpgThere are many concerns that the use of social media disconnects people from one another. Conventional wisdom holds that the use of social media causes people to disregard or value less their interpersonal relationships. As a result many groups—and in particular the local church— have tended to shy away from social media as a way to impart information and build relationships within their community. This paper is a survey of current research that provides clarity about how and why people use social media. There are several important findings in this survey that have salience for the local church and how it connects with people in their community and how information spreads. The findings indicate that instead of competing with and diminishing interpersonal relationships, the use of social media among youth and adults amplifies those relationships. Of special note is the finding that the use of social media may open up information and interaction to those who are introverted or in some way reticent in asserting themselves in face-to-face interactions.</p
Scalable and Efficient Associative Processor Solution to Guarantee Real-Time Requirements for Air Traffic Control Systems
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/node/17407/87333-thumbnail.jpgThis paper proposes a solution to air traffic control (ATC) using an enhanced SIMD machine model called an Associative Processor (AP). Our solution differs from previous ATC systems that are designed for MIMD computers and have a great deal of difficulty meeting the predictability requirements for ATC, which are critical for meeting the strict certification standards required for safety critical software components. The proposed AP solution supports accurate predictions of worst case execution times and guarantees all deadlines are met. Furthermore, the software developed based on the AP model is much simpler and smaller in size than the current corresponding ATC software. As the associative processor is built from SIMD hardware, it is considerably cheaper and simpler than the MIMD hardware currently used to support ATC. We have designed a prototype for eight ATC real-time tasks on ClearSpeed CSX600 accelerator that is used to emulate AP. Performance is evaluated in terms of execution time and predictability and is compared to the fastest host-only version implemented using OpenMP on an 8core multiprocessor (MIMD). Our extensive experiments show that the AP implementation meets all deadlines that can be statically scheduled. To the contrary, some tasks miss their deadlines when implemented on MIMD. It is shown that the proposed AP solution will support accurate and meaningful predictions of worst case execution times and will guarantee that all deadlines are met.</p
