Hemingway, Cuba, and the Cuban Works
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/hemingway/8/thumbnail.jpgThe profound impact of Cuba on Ernest Hemingway’s life and work
Ernest Hemingway resided in Cuba longer than he lived anywhere else in the world, yet no book has been devoted to how his life in Cuba influenced his writing. Hemingway, Cuba, and the Cuban Works corrects this omission by presenting contributions by scholars and journalists from the United States, Russia, Japan, and Cuba, who explore how Hemingway absorbed and wrote from the culture and place around him.
The volume opens with an examination of Hemingway’s place in Cuban history and culture, evaluations of the man and his work, and studies of Hemingway’s life as an American in Cuba. These essays look directly at Hemingway’s Cuban experience, and they range from the academic to the journalistic, allowing different voices to speak and different tones to be heard. The first section includes reflections from Gladys Rodriguez Ferrero, former director of the Museo Finco Vigía, who describes the deep affection Cubans hold for Hemingway; and recollections from the now-adult members of “Gigi’s All Stars,” the boys’ baseball team that Hemingway organized in the 1940s.
In the second part of the collection, Hemingway scholars— among them, Kim Moreland, James Nagel, Ann Putnam, and H. R. Stoneback—employ a variety of critical perspectives to analyze specific works set in Cuba or on its Gulf Stream and written during the years that Hemingway actually lived in Cuba. Also included are a long letter by Richard Armstrong describing the Machado revolution in Cuba and Hemingway’s photographs of fishermen at Cojimar, which provide vivid visual commentary on The Old Man and the Sea.
Appended to the collection are Kelli Larson’s bibliography of scholarly writing on Hemingway’s Cuban works and Ned Quevedo Arnaiz’s sample of Cuban writing on those works. A chronology placing Hemingway’s life in Cuba beside historical events is also provided.
This important volume illuminates Hemingway’s life and work during the Cuban years, and it will appeal to Hemingway fans and scholars alike.</p
Using Rapid Review Methods for Topics in Religion
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/acir/2014/One/2/thumbnail.jpgIn academia the traditional literature review (TLR) is used to provide a summary look at what has been \u27done before\u27. However, critics poiint to the potential for biased representation of topics when TLR are used. A large systematic review methods (SR) literature offers evidence that the shortcomings of TLR might be minimized. Moreover, SR methods themselves are evolving; \u27rapid reviews\u27 are a new approach for ‘picturing the literature’ on topics. We report on a \u27rapid review\u27 used to ‘map the social science literature’ on the topic of ‘intolerance in religion’, and we discuss our experience with the rapid review method. In all academic disciplines it is common to see authors refer to what is found in \u27the literature\u27; and in many areas the traditional literature review (TLR) is used to provide a summary look at what has been \u27done before\u27. However, among other concerns, critics have pointed to the potential for biased representation of topics when TLR are used. Some have pointed to concerns with potential unconscious or conscious “cherry picking" of publications to support a reviewers viewpoint, or reviewers using an unrepresentative subset of literature, or to the lack of details about the steps taken or key decisions made as TLR are developed. In response, a large systematic review methods (SR) literature in the health and social sciences offers itself as evidence that the shortcomings of TLR might be significantly reduced. Furthermore, SR methods themselves are evolving; for example,\u27rapid reviews\u27 are a new approach for those needing to complete initial pictures of what literatures are showing on topics. These are two sample papers on “rapid reviews” as a method: Expediting systematic reviews: methods and implications of rapid reviews - www.implementationscience.com/content/5/1/56 Evidence summaries: the evolution of a rapid review approach - www.systematicreviewsjournal.com/content/1/1/10 The proposed presentation will present results of a \u27rapid review\u27 used to develop a picture of a topic in religion. The ‘rapid review’ that we will complete will provide the basis for ‘mapping the social science literature’ on the topic of ‘intolerance in religion’. Because one of the core characteristics of rapid reviews involves transparently reporting of methods used, this review could provide a ‘framework’ for additional research on the topic of intolerance, for example readers would have the basis for identifying additional searching that could be used. The ‘framework’ could also be used as a guide, or start, for updating research. Additionally, by providing a description of the ‘rapid review’ methods we used, along with comments about our experience, our report will also contribute to discussions of methods for enhancing rigorous, timely, accurate research on topics in religion. The results also have potential for suggesting how readers might have enhanced confidence in the conclusions presented in such research. The author has been studying systematic review (SR) methods for over 5 years. His sabbatical focus in 2010 was on the use of SR methods for topics in religion and philosophy. He has published on SR methods in one of the top journals for SR methods: Fehrmann, P., & Thomas, J. (2011). Comprehensive computer searches and reporting in systematic reviews. Research Synthesis Methods, 2(1), 15-32. He is completing a second article to be submitted to the same journal for consideration. A related paper has been accepted for presentation at the annual midwinter meeting of the Society of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology (APA\u27s Division 24), in Atlanta, GA.</p
What Don\u27t Kill Us Makes Us Stronger: African American Women and Suicide (New Critical Viewpoints on Society)
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/facultybooks/15/thumbnail.jpgA close look at black women’s physical, mental, and social circumstances reveals harmful social disparities. Yet, for decades, black women’s suicide rates have remained virtually nonexistent compared to the rest of the American population, baffling social scientists. In this book, black women speak for themselves about their life struggles and their notions of suicide. Within a framework that explores racial and gender inequalities, Spates uses interviews to uncover reasons for the racial suicide paradox. Her analysis offers a deeper understanding of the positive life strategies, including family and faith, that underlie black women’s resilience.</p
Feminist Community Engagement: Achieving Praxis
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/facultybooks/16/thumbnail.jpgFeminist Community Engagement argues that feminism, with its emphasis on consciousness-raising, interrogating power structures, and activism, is strategically necessary for the community engagement (CE) movement in higher education. Following an editorial overview of perspectives on feminism and community engagement, the contributors to this volume illuminate successes and challenges of feminist community engagement, and many offer practical applications for our CE work. Feminist Community Engagement advances how feminism can serve as a theoretical and practical strategy for combining activist engagement with democratic concerns for social justice and equality. Iverson, James, and their contributors draw explicitly on a feminist lens to illuminate successes and challenges of feminist community engagement, and offer practical applications.</p
Beyond the SSI: Creating an Evaluation of Course Learning Outcomes
We can collect better information than what is provided by the Student Survey of Instruction (SSI) and we can do it simply. For the past several semesters, the presenter has used an end-of-course survey to indirectly assess students’ mastery of course learning outcomes as a means to get away from satisfaction assessment. This presentation will focus on the process for developing that evaluation and the information gained, both qualitative and quantitative.</p
Imagining a Way Through
Imagining a Way Through is an investigation into finding ways to engage with residual urban space. As part of an introductory urban design studio, the project served as a tool for exploring the highly individualized process of imagining design solutions for vacancy in our cities. The tool becomes a method for researching and understanding site through the projection of imaginary conditions onto the existing context. In this way, the project has initiated further investigation into the role that the individual plays in developing alternate futures for urban space. The question is also raised against permanence as a goal of design practice. As the individual is given more agency to affect their environment, long-term solutions to what would be increasingly temporary design problems become less practical.</p
A Wise Latina Woman
In the documentary A Wise Latina Woman, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s “wise Latina woman” statement serves as a catalyst for critical discussion about the relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States. It engages with the Puerto Rican diaspora and Puerto Ricans on the island to consider complex questions about colonialism and the future of Puerto Rican culture. The experience of growing up in a Puerto Rican household in the Bronx is one I share with Sotomayor and it is depicted in the documentary when I return to our ancestral roots in Puerto Rico and New York. Our common heritage, and its traditions and sounds, will act as a subtext to the crisis in Puerto Rico. It will emerge from contemporary and historical images of Puerto Rico and the Bronx; excerpts from Sotomayor’s Senate nomination hearing; and from numerous interviews with relevant voices versed in the story/history being told.</p

A Citation Analysis of Ecclesiastes Scholarship: A Test Case Using Citation Analysis in Biblical Studies
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/asir/vol4/iss1/2/thumbnail.jpgTheological libraries have a long history in librarianship, but very little work has been done in trying to understand the nature of the materials that theological libraries collect. For example, within the social science subset of Journal Citation Reports, no journals were retrieved using the search terms “Bible,” or “biblical” and only one result was produced using the search term “theology.” As theological libraries (and libraries with large theology and religion collections) feel financial pressures to maintain a relevant and quality collection while justifying each and every purchase, a better understanding of the citation patterns within the broad fields of theology, church history, religion and biblical studies is needed. By doing so it is hoped that the gathered information would help librarians with collection development by giving librarians knowledge about what materials are actually being used by scholars. Thus, this study has examined a small sub-set of this biblical literature in order to better understand the citation patterns (if any) are evident in this literature.</p
