    The Beauty of Poison

    The Beauty of Poison Name of Authors: Shiyao Peng Department: Fashion School Problem: To create a Fall/Winter and Holiday 2016 women’s clothing collection that incorporates personal aesthetics and market trends. Visual research was conducted from different perspectives relating to the theme of “beauty of poison.” Methods: Design style identification: Evening wear in the Ready-to-Wear category Design inspiration research: Imagery of creatures which have attractive characteristics, but the fragile and dark ‘souls’ inside of them are poisonous. Market research and trend analysis: Used WGSN to research the forecasting season, colors, fabric and texture and knit wear designs to find out my design direction. Fabric and color story: Soft, light weight silk chiffon, silk mesh and silk jersey were selected to contrast the stiff, heavy weight knits and leather. Rich contrasting colors of dark blue were implemented with the flare of coral orange. Swatch sampling and creation: Digital textile prints- Designed abstract prints which were inspired by the texture and dark soul. Hand-knitting- Created extreme boulder-like volume knit samples with bobble shape and cable details. 3D Research: Draped garments on the dress form. Design Development: Problem solving worked out in fashion illustration with which clearly showing garments’ silhouette, fabrication and color. Flats: Illustrated different view of the garments, to visually explain the design construction, details. Results: Mood board, fabric and color story, prints designs, fashion flats and fashion illustrations. Conclusion: The collection displayed effectively integrated the theme of the ‘beauty of poison’ through the integration of the design elements and materials used.</p

    Beta Synemin is a Dual AKAP

    b-Synemin is a cytoskeletal that also functions to targets PKA to specific subcellular locations, thus it also functions as an A-kinase anchoring protein (AKAP). We have recently confirmed that b-synemin is capable of binding both PKA type I and PKA type II using yeast two-hybrid, FACS-FRET, and co-immunoprecipitation analysis, which therefore classifies it as a dual AKAP. Most interestingly, our co-immunoprecipitation data also suggests that the binding of PKA type I to b-synemin only occurs only upon stimulation of the b-adrenergic pathway. Currently we are carrying out co-immunoprecipitation studies to determine the binding status of PKA type II and the catalytic subunit of PKA under both basal and stimulated conditions. These data are exciting because they suggest temporal compartmentalization of PKA type I and II at a single subcellular location, b-synemin.</p

    Does sex, age, or species drive gut microbial community similarities between captive lorikeets?

    Gut microbial communities are known to be associated with immune defense. Changes to this microbial ecosystem can have negative effects on animal health. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has recently experienced an abnormally high mortality rate in their captive lorikeet colony, particularly in their younger animals. We hypothesized that lorikeet health may be associated with differences in gut microbial communities. We predicted that differences in gut microbiota between animals may be correlated with particular individual traits including bird age, sex, and species. Amplifying the 16S rRNA gene region of bacterial DNA and using a fragment analysis technique, we assessed gut microbial community structure across 34 birds. Analysis revealed two distinct groupings of similarly structured gut microbial communities across our samples; however, bird sex, age or species did not correlate with these groupings. In future laboratory studies, we will examine whether these two distinct groupings are driven by known deleterious microbes.</p

    Development and Implementation of a Very Efficient and Scalable Program Slicing Approach

    Program slicing is a commonly used approach for understanding and detecting the impact of changes to software. The idea is quite simple, given a variable and the location of that variable in a program, tell me what other parts of the program are affected by this variable. The approach has been used successfully for many years for various software maintenance tasks. For example, slicing was used to help address the Y2K problem by identifying parts of a program that could be impacted by changes on date fields. The concept of program slicing was originally identified by Weiser as a debugging aid. He defined the slice as an executable program that preserved the behavior of the original program. Weiser’s algorithm traces the data and control dependencies by solving data-flow equations for determining the direct and indirect relevant variables and statements. Since that time a number of different slicing techniques and tools have been proposed and implemented. These techniques are broadly distinguished according to the type of slices such as: static versus dynamic, closure versus executable, inter-procedural versus intra-procedural, and forward versus backward. The calculation of a program slice is, with few exceptions, based on the notion of a Program Dependence Graph (PDG) or one of its variants, e.g., a System Dependence Graph (SDG). Unfortunately, building the PDG/SDG is quite costly in terms of computational time and space. As such slicing approaches generally do not scale well and while there are some (costly) workarounds, generating slices for a very large system can often take days of computing time. Additionally, many tools are strictly limited to an upper bound on the size of the program they can slice. The work here addresses this limitation by eliminating the time and effort needed to build the entire PDG. In short it combines a text-based approach with a lightweight static analysis infrastructure that only computes dependence information as needed (aka on-the-fly) while computing the slice for each variable in the program. The slicing process is performed using the srcML format for source code that was developed here at Kent State University. The srcML format provides direct access to abstract syntactic information to support static analysis. While this lightweight approach will typically never match the accuracy of generating a full PDG/SDG and doing full pointer analysis, etc. it provides a fairly accurate picture of a program slice in an extremely short time comparatively for large systems (i.e., we found up to four orders of magnitude increase in speed for large systems). These techniques have been realized in a software tool called srcSlice that produces program slices in the context of every variable in an entire software system. The tool works for both the C and C++ programming languages and is highly scalable (e.g., can produce slices of a 2 million line program in minutes). Specifically, my research has been to enhance the slicing capabilities and expand the accuracy of the tool and approach. The srcSlice tool currently does not have any type resolution capabilities and no functionality to determine the type of variables. In program analysis, the final type of a variable is crucial for accuracy. The challenge has been to develop a separate component of the tool that provides more complete type resolution for every variable in the program, along with other details of that variable. This involved the development of algorithms to efficiently extract the type information and integrate that information into the computation of the slice(s). This very fast and scalable, yet slightly less accurate, slicing approach is extremely useful for a number of reasons. Developers will have a very low cost and practical means to estimate the impact of a change within minutes versus days. This is very important for planning the implementation of new features and understanding how a change is related to other parts of the system. It will also provide an inexpensive test to determine if a full deep more expensive analysis of the system is warranted. Lastly, we feel a fast slicing approach could open up new avenues of research in metrics and the mining of histories based on slicing. That is, slicing can now be conducted on very large systems and on entire version histories in very practical time frames. This opens the door to a number of experiments and empirical investigations previously too costly to undertake.</p

The Ludlow scribe, compiler and copyist, shows himself to have been a man of unusual curiosity, acquisitiveness, and discerning connoisseurship.</p

    At Home in the Subtropics: Richard Neutra and the Hispanic Patio

    In the twentieth century the ancient atrium was resurrected and adapted for Modern residential architecture in order to ventilate and illuminate interior spaces, to provide privacy and exposure to the natural elements, and to abide by the constraints of urban density. For inspiration architect Richard Neutra turned to the Hispanic version of the atrium—the patio—for inspiration. His update of the Hispanic patio produced houses that were especially suited to the climate, culture and tradition of the American subtropics. By focusing on several houses he designed in California between 1925 and 1939, this poster will graphically document the increasing use of the Hispanic patio in Neutra’s work, as well as the enduring importance of this architectural prototype throughout his professional career. This poster results from a paper of the same title that was originally presented at the 2013 ACSA Fall Conference with partial funding from the UTC.</p
