Wildlife Rehabilitation and the Environment
Anthropogenic impacts to the environment form a suite of problems that are detrimental for native species: habitat loss and fragmentation, overexploitation, pollution, climate change, and the global re-distribution of non-native species. Wildlife rehabilitation centers are on the front lines of identifying and quantifying human impacts. This research uses historical records from the Stark Parks Wildlife and Rehabilitation Center, focusing on the taxa admitted to the clinic and the recovery rate of those taxa as a function of the cause of injury; natural or human-caused. We will also analyze results with respect to age and sex of the admitted species and the seasonality in which individuals are admitted. Learning more about what causes such injuries, whether it be pollution, predation, park visitors, etc., will give listeners a more well-rounded perspective of the importance of rehabilitation treatment and preventative measures.</p
Association between Resilience and Bully Victimization among Middle Adolescence Students
There has been little focus on how personal resilience may play a role in some students overcoming being victimized by bullies. This study explores bully victimization in relation to resilience among 62 middle adolescents. Utilizing a paper and pencil survey, the study measured aspects of bullying and resilience using the Gatehouse Bullying Scale, a cyberbullying scale, and a dependent measure of resilience using the Resilience Scale for Adolescence. The study hypothesized that traditional bullying would be a significant predictor of personal competence and structured style. The study also hypothesized that cyberbullying would be a significant predictor of personal competence. Additionally, the study hypothesized that traditionally bullying and cyberbullying would be significant predictors of family cohesion. Findings from the study showed that traditional bullying and cyber bullying were predictive of aspects of personal resilience.</p
All Odds Against Private Slovik
A historian’s role is to research, analyze, interpret, and present the past. When war is thought about, we think of stories that are about heroes, feats of gallantry and valor. We never tend to think about those stories that are never brought up, stories such as Private Slovik, a soldier in the American Army. That’s because these are stories that aren’t recognized as acceptable to the Uniform Code of Military Justice or the laws that govern the military conduct. Private Slovik is the only American deserter that was executed for desertion during World War II. Furthermore, it is estimated that throughout the war, 40,000 Americans committed desertion. William Bradford Huie is a journalist who has expressed Slovik’s story to the world, but as a journalist what makes his recounting of this topic credible to history, being that he’s a journalist and not a historian?</p
Rhododendron Roots
The Rhododendron genus can be found in many different habitats around the world but scarce in desserts, and dry forests as well as tundra regions. . Rhododendrons are studied from the xylem to the leaves, but we believe the secret is in the roots. Kong et al., found two different dimensions of root trait diameter across 96 subtropical woody species: a diameter related dimension that may integrate root construction, and possibly maintenance and persistence, with a branching density dimension that may express difference in root plastic responses to environment. We would like to address the question of what really goes on in the roots and if the anatomy and morphology of the roots are connected to the temperature tolerance of different rhododendron species. We also believe that Rhododendron with similar cold tolerances have similar fungi on their roots. The study site was the Helen S. Layer Rhododendron garden at Holden Arboretum. We studied the morphology, anatomy of six species of Rhododendron from three sections: Ponticum section (Maximum, Degronianum), Pentanthera section (Austrinum, Molle), and Tsutsuti (Yedoense, Indicum).</p
How marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) cope with stability challenges during arboreal locomotion
For arboreal mammals, problems of stability increase as branches become smaller and more compliant (i.e., move more under the animal’s weight). Changing the size and compliancy of a substrate should cause arboreal mammals to change their gait to facilitate balance. We tested this by having two marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) cross differently sized stable and compliant arboreal supports (5cm, 2.5cm, and 1.25cm in diameter). We filmed the marmosets with four high-speed cameras, testing how they would change their gait in order to maximize stability on thin and unsteady branches. Overall, the marmosets put more limbs on the substrate and for longer periods of time when substrate diameter decreased and when the substrate was compliant. Specifically, duty factors (the percent of time that a limb contacts the support during a stride) increased when the substrate size decreased. There was also a difference in duty factor between the stable and compliant substrates, such that the duty factor increased when the marmosets were on the compliant substrate. The average number of supporting limbs contacting the substrate at any one time also increased when the size of the substrate decreased and when the substrate became compliant. These findings show that marmosets respond to variation in substrate size and substrate compliancy in similar ways, in both cases increasing the average number of limb contacts and the duration of limb contact on a substrate in order to maintain stability.</p
Decellularized Basement Matrix Membranes and Their Ability to Support Engraftment and Proliferation of Human Dermal Fibroblasts
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/ugresearch/2015/Biomedical/7/thumbnail.jpgDecellularized extracellular matrix components isolated from animal sources have shown much clinical promise in the treatment of several wound care indications including a variety of dermal ulcerations (diabetic, pressure, venous, e.g.), full-thickness trauma wounds affecting the skin and skeletal muscle, and post-operative surgical wounds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of three sources of decellularized matrix wound care products using a novel tissue engineered dermal cellular proliferation assay. Deceullarized basement matrices derived from porcine small intestinal submucosa (pSIS), porcine peritoneal membrane (pPM), and ovine forestomach (oFS), respectively, were tested for their ability to support the engraftment and proliferation of human neonatal dermal fibroblasts. Cells were seeded onto each respective membrane using a custom, non-adherent, cell culture system and cultured for 2 weeks. At 3, 5, 7, and 14 days time points cultures were assayed for proliferation and matrix integration using the PrestoBlue cell viability assay and fluorescent confocal laser scanning microscopy, respectively. Human dermal fibroblast attachment to all three materials was relatively low compared to conventional two-dimensional culture systems. However, pSIS displayed a consistently, but not statistically significant, greater level of fluorescence intensity in the cell viability assay, and qualitatively displayed a superior ability to support engraftment of dermal fibroblasts in comparison to pPM and oFS matrices. These data indicate that pSIS supports the attachment and growth of dermal cells in vitro, which may underscore the success of this material in pre-clinical and clinical wound healing studies.</p
Panel Discussion: Reflections from Women Framing American Rights: Framing Activism Conference
The Seneca Falls Trip project is to provide an opportunity for students to deepen their learning about the early struggles for equality of women in the public sphere, including women’s early, organized struggle for political, class, gender, and racial equity, on site at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park, the National Women’s Hall of Fame, and other historically significant locations in Seneca Falls, NY. With this knowledge and through this experience, students will be encouraged to consider their role in civic society. The combination of experiential learning and encouraged self-reflection will motivate and inspire civic engagement among project participants. The Women’s Leadership Symposium is a direct result of developing research, leadership and advocacy opportunities for Kent State University faculty and students participating the Seneca Falls trip.</p
