Performing History: Remembering Paul Robeson and the Peekskill Riots through Tayo Aluko’s Call Mr. Robeson
No full texthttps://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/node/9879/8777-thumbnail.jpgIn 1949 Paul Robeson (with support from Pete Seeger, Woodie Guthrie, Howard Fast, and others) attempted to and then successfully held a civil and workers’ rights concert in Peekskill, New York. Marring these performances, however, were protests that turned progressively violent. These violent protests have come to be known as the Peekskill Riots and serve as a major milestone in the nation’s history surrounding protest, music, politics, and Paul Robeson. This paper reflects on this relationship, particularly how it is being remembered today. Through field research, including participant observation, interviews, landscape analysis, and primary and secondary archival research, I demonstrate how British-Nigerian writer, singer, actor, activist, and architect Tayo Aluko “performs history” through his musical Call Mr. Robeson. This includes how Paul Robeson and the Peekskill Riots are remembered through performance and how the continued performances place the identity and history of Peekskill in a state of becoming. This is also a case study more broadly for how social movements are influenced, fueled, and remembered through performance.</p

1930s, Kaley (F.E. Allen) Cottage in Estes Park

Green, a local builder, to construct a bungalow for her summer residence. Like her neighbors, she used Moraine Park as base for exploring Rocky Mountain National Park. She used it every summer until she sold the property in 1953. Of all the cabins at Kaley\u27s in the Pines, this is the most handsome. The bungalow has several rustic features that connect it to its forested surroundings. The shingle siding, prominent stone chimney and foundation, and numerous porches mimic nearby National Park Service-built Rustic buildings. The book is for art educators at the preK-12 level in schools, museums, and enrichment programs, and university professors in teacher preparation programs. Design education is about problem-solving, learning through objects of our daily lives, and the role design plays in social responsibility and the creative economy. Designers utilize research methods, technology, sketching, and the construction of prototypes. The basis of these techniques, systems, and tools may be taught to preK-12 students. Students need lifelong skills that build their creativity and problem-solving capabilities to better understand the world and themselves and use visual communication to advance their abilities to express ideas. Design is a study about life and can touch on all school subjects, making it a valuable interdisciplinary study. Students are able to directly apply thinking strategies and learning about facts, figures, and concepts at the same time they are crafting meaningful ideas about the importance, influence, and social implications of everyday items and the potential to improve the world.</p

Ethnic women writers make significant contributions to this dialogue regarding the reconfiguration of people and their perimeters. A multigenre and multicultural text, Community Boundaries and Border Crossings explores the novels, short stories, essays, autobiographies, testimonios, plays, poems, and hybrid poetics of established and emerging ethnic women writers. This collection of critical essays highlights the new zones of cultural contact and exchange that are defining the twenty-first century. Discovering the Bedrock and Glacial Geologic History of Pymatuning Lake State Park, Ashtabula County, Ohio
No full texthttps://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/trumbull_showcase/2016/Posters/6/thumbnail.jpgPymatuning Lake State Park is located on the wetlands surrounding the Shenango River in Ashtabula County, Ohio and Crawford County, Pennsylvania. In 1933, the Pymatuning Lake Reservoir was completed on the river for flood control, water supply, recreation, and fish and wildlife management. In addition to the dam, the Espyville-Andover Highway was completed to cross the lake. However, detailed geologic information of the park is lacking for the public to understand its ancient history. A detailed investigation was conducted to better constrain the geologic history of Pymatuning Lake State Park. Detailed information of the park was gathered through extensive fieldwork and published data. Bedrock and glacial geologic maps were constructed this data. Thickness of glacial material and bedrock formations were determined using ground water well data. A cross section through the park was produced, showing the geology in the third dimension. Pymatuning Lake State Park is situated on the glaciated plateau of northeastern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania border where Pleistocene glaciers advanced over the gentle hills and stream valleys of the land formerly uplifted as part of the Appalachian Mountain building process. The subsurface bedrock units in the park consist of Devonian shales. The bedrock was covered by several ice advances of the Wisconsinan Glacier that left behind glacial features consisting of the Hiram, Lavery, and Kent ground moraines, and the Defiance end moraine north of the park. These glacial units completely cover the bedrock, leaving minimum exposures in the area.</p

Mentored by Dr. Garth Cahoon, David joined Ohio State University’s Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster in 1980; an era devoted to cultivation of traditional native grapes, most of which were used for juice and the remainder fermented into regionally popular wines. Over the years he has helped both new and veteran growers across the state produce world class wine by helping them transform their acreage into hybrid and vinifera vines. He has worked directly with a countless number of growers to establish new vines and has monitored their growth.</p
