During the time this photo was taken, Esther was living in Utah. She was briefly married to Henry Clinton Gaw, an auditor who passed away in 1912. Together they had one son, Emir Allen Gaw. Florence was residing in New York City, attending law school, and assisting clients at the New York League for Protection of Immigrants. In addition, she provided music lectures at schools and libraries in New York City to help cover the cost of tuiton. Elizabeth, the youngest Allen daughter, married Harrison Sloane, an attorney, in 1912 and they moved to San Diego, California to raise their three daughters.</p

Exiled in America: Life on the Margins in a Residential Motel

Cast aside by their families and mainstream society, they survive in squalid, unsafe, and demeaning circumstances that few of us can imagine. For a year, the sociologist Christopher P. Dum lived in the Boardwalk Motel to better understand its residents and the varied paths that brought them there. He witnessed moments of violence and conflict, as well as those of care and compassion. As told through the voices and experiences of motel residents, Exiled in America paints a portrait of a vibrant community whose members forged identities in response to overwhelming stigma and created meaningful lives despite crushing economic instability. In addition to chronicling daily life at the Boardwalk, Dum follows local neighborhood efforts to shut the establishment down, leading to a wider analysis of legislative attempts to sanitize shared social space. He also suggests meaningful policy changes to address the societal failures that lead to the need for motels such as the Boardwalk. The story of the Boardwalk, and the many motels like it, will concern anyone who cares about the lives of America\u27s most vulnerable citizens.</p

Exposure: Shining a Light on Human Trafficking in Southeast Asia
No full textHuman trafficking is a booming modern-day slave trade that has ensnared the lives of millions of children, women, and men in major cities and towns across Southeast Asia. This presentation is a result of research compiled on human trafficking activity in the countries of Cambodia and India during an independent honors investigation course with Dr. Leslie Heaphy. The presentation describes the day-to-day lives of those caught in the slave trade in Southeast Asia, discusses the long-term emotional, physical, and mental consequences endured by human trafficking victims, and identifies the actions of human rights organizations that are working to alleviate human trafficking around the globe. The presentation will conclude with suggestions audience members can follow in order to help combat human trafficking both locally and globally. </p
Overcoming Challenges in Online Peer Tutoring
No full texthttps://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/trumbull_showcase/2016/Posters/5/thumbnail.jpgThis project examines types of comments which tutees using the Trumbull Online Writing Lab (OWL) are receiving from tutors and why tutors are providing these types of comments. Two tutors analyzed 10 submissions to create an instrument which is used to examine the entire data set consisting of 20 OWL submissions. The majority of comments focus on mechanical errors. This finding suggests two things: Firstly, tutors frequently focus on mechanical mistakes; and secondly, tutors are failing to provide comments regarding content. This second finding is problematic because content is critical to the production of an effective paper. This project postulates that the lack of content-related comments is due to the fact that providing such feedback via email does not enable the type of direct and instantaneous communication which occurs during face-to-face tutoring. This project not only highlights a deficiency in email-facilitated tutor feedback but also suggests a possible solution to this issue: the use of collaborative, real-time software which would provide an opportunity to communicate instantly and directly with students.</p
2006 Inductee, Allan Klingshirn; Winemaker and Owner of Klingshirn Winery

Allan purchased the family farm in 1955 from his father Albert, who had established the winery in 1935 following the repeal of Prohibition. Under Allan\u27s leadership, the winery more than quadrupled in size and its buildings were expanded to include a retail tasting room. His influence can be seen in thousands of thriving vineyards from the Ohio River to the shores of Lake Erie. Specifically, he was recognized for his research and extension work in grapes. However his enthusiasm, energy, can-do attitude, clear presentations and willingness to be ever helpful made it easy for well-established growers and those just starting out to adopt his recommendations.
