Cultural Bias: Gymnasts, Judges, and Bilateral Trade Agreements

Greater cultural understanding or similarities may be revealed through a number of avenues. We investigate one particular avenue: the judging of gymnastic performances. Using execution and difficulty scores from the 2009 World Gymnastics Championships, we find that gymnasts realize a greater return in terms of execution score for each bump in difficulty when the home countries of the judge and the athlete share a bilateral trade agreement.</p
Academic Advisors’ Perceptions of Student-Athletes at NCAA Division-I Institutions

The importance of this research is because unfavorable perceptions of student athletes by academic advisors can lead to negative experiences for both groups. Findings indicated increasing both eligibility requirement knowledge and athletic department involvement can lead to positive athletic department perception, which can lead to positive perceptions of student-athletes. This would assist in creating a more desirable and productive advising environment for both groups.</p
1913, Florence Allen Marching for Women\u27s Suffrage

Florence was heavily involved in the women\u27s suffrage movement after she received her undergraduate degree from Western Reserve University. She participated in both the Ohio and New York women’s suffrage groups and attended many of their meetings and rallies. In 1913, Florence and her law school friend, Bertha "Bert" Miller, took part in the "Votes for Women" pilgrimage. Demonstrators, led by Rosalie Jones marched from New York City to Washington D.C..</p

No full texthttps://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/markko_images/1/thumbnail.jpgTim Hubbard, co-founder of Markko Vineyard, testing a sample of wine from a barrel in the winery’s cellar. The device shown on top of the barrel is a fermentation lock attached to a bung. Still used in wine production, the lock allows carbon dioxide to escape during fermentation without letting air in and the bung, a stopper, provides an airtight seal. Air exposure for any significant period of time will cause wine spoilage.</p

As proprietors of the Grand River Wine Co., the Worthy family followed the lead of Arnulf Esterer of Markko Vineyards and planted a number of European-style vinifera vines successfully, considered by the experts to be a fruitless venture at the time. In addition to a hospitality room and wine cellar, the winery also produced plays under the name of Mapleleaf Theater. The Worthy family sold the winery in 1998 and in 2005, Madison Wine Cellars purchased it and named it Grand River Cellars. Today, the winery prides itself on producing quality Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Grigio wine from grapes grown in the Grand River Valley Wine Region.</p

Part I presents a series of cases that tie together narratives of being, knowing and contestation surrounding the claiming of identity for the self or the categorization of the other. It does this by exploring narratives to claim identities and assert agency; showing us the dialectic between dominant forces and those who would challenge existing narratives about place, identity or space. Part II continues RSMCC’s tradition of cutting edge research in social movement formation, conflict and change. These chapters focus on a wide range of social organizations from immigrant movements, to the occupy struggle, to the narratives around the framing and counter-framing of the radical environmental movement. The volume concludes with two chapters focusing on more recent developments in data gathering and analysis to examine changes in how researchers collect and analyze data. Each of the nine chapters engages with notions of identity, whether in the examination of the subject or in the reference to the researcher him or herself.</p
