Faculty Salary (In)Equity: A Review of the Literature
No full text/sites/default/files/journals/5/articles/219/submission/thumbnail.jpgWhile faculty salary differentials are expected due to varying levels of appropriate characteristics such as education, relevant credentials, expertise, prior experience, and productivity, even after controlling for differences in these characteristics, data shows that women and racial and ethnic minorities consistently earn less than White males at every faculty rank (Gregory, 2001; Toutkoushian, 1998). Moreover, notable salary differences are also present between faculty members who teach at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and faculty members who teach at Historically White Colleges and Universities (HWCUs) (Provasnik & Shafer, 2004). Such disparities are significant because they illustrate the pervasiveness of privilege and oppression in higher education, a field that often claims to value diversity. This paper is designed to highlight historical and current trends in faculty salary (in)equity, and offer several implications for policymakers, current and prospective faculty members, and researchers who aspire to further investigate this topic.</p

The Raised Fists Photo Incident at West Point: A Case Study Examination of Systemic and Color-Blind Racism
No full texthttps://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/node/9984/8874-thumbnail.jpgThe raised fists photo from West Point that proliferated quickly across the internet and in mainstream media made a group that may have been regarded as invisible “hypervisble” to the American public. The raised fists photo cast 16 African American female cadets into the public eye and led to multiple responses across a spectrum that varied from staunch disapproval to celebratory acceptance. A historical and critical examination of this case offers greater insight into the ways racism manifests in public discourse. The events that took place in the aftermath of the raised fists photo highlight the prevalence of systemic and color-blind racism in today’s society and offer an opportunity to examine the case’s implications within the higher education community.</p

Who Pays for College Athletic Spending? An Examination of the Evidence
No full text/sites/default/files/journals/4/articles/175/submission/thumbnail.jpgCollege athletics is a major business in the United States. Collegiate sports teams generate billions of dollars in revenues, but they also incur billions of dollars in costs, and for the vast majority of athletic teams, revenues do not cover costs. When athletic programs do not cover their costs, the institutional budget must fund these expenses. In this paper, we demonstrate that an institution’s athletic subsidy per student is dependent on the institution’s number of students. Further, we find that institutions where the athletic subsidy per student is high enroll a disproportionate share of students who are economically disadvantaged and less qualified academically.</p
