Literature in Translation: Teaching Issues and Reading Practices
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/translation/3/thumbnail.jpgNew pedagogy for studying literature in translation In the last several decades, literary works from around the world have made their way onto the reading lists of American university and college courses in an increasingly wide variety of disciplines. This is a cause for rejoicing. Through works in translation, students in our mostly monolingual society are at last becoming acquainted with the multilingual and multicultural world in which they will live and work. Many instructors have expanded their reach to teach texts that originate from across the globe. Unfortunately, literature in English translation is frequently taught as if it had been written in English, and students are not made familiar with the cultural, linguistic, and literary context in which that literature was produced. As a result, they submit what they read to their own cultural expectations; they do not read in translation and do not reap the benefits of intercultural communication. Here a true challenge arises for an instructor. Books in translation seldom contain introductory information about the mediation that translation implies or the stakes involved in the transfer of cultural information. Instructors are often left to find their own material about the author or the culture of the source text. Lacking the appropriate pedagogical tools, they struggle to provide information about either the original work or about translation itself, and they might feel uneasy about teaching material for which they lack adequate preparation. Consequently, they restrict themselves to well-known works in translation or works from other countries originally written in English. Literature in Translation: Teaching Issues and Reading Practicessquarely addresses this pedagogical lack. The book’s sixteen essays provide for instructors a context in which to teach works from a variety of languages and cultures in ways that highlight the effects of linguistic and cultural transfers.</p
A software implementation of a cycle precision simulator of a multiple associative model
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/node/16625/87559-thumbnail.jpgThe Multiple Associative Computing (MASC) parallel model is a generalization model of an Associative Computing (ASC) parallel model designed to support multiple ASC data parallel threads by using control parallelism. The MASC model is designed to combine the advantages of both Single Instruction Stream Multiple Data Streams (SIMD) and Multiple Instruction Streams Multiple Data Streams (MIMD) models. Here is the first time that a complete description of MASC model has been implemented (in software) true to its original description. A cycle precision simulator is built to demonstrate the performance of MASC on various multithreaded algorithms. The simulator is a software prototype for the model with sufficient software details to allow it to be converted into a hardware prototype of the model. If a reasonable limit for the number of threads simultaneously supported is assumed, the resulting hardware design is not only easily to implement, but can easily support a huge number of processing units and is a excellent candidate architecture for supporting large scale (e.g., terascale and petascale) computing. Experimental results shows that, when processing large-scale instances using multiple workers, the algorithm executed by the MASC model using a static task assignment scheme provides strong scaling with constant time overhead.</p

Hemingway’s Cuban Son: Reflections on the Writer by His Longtime Majordomo
https://kent-islandora.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/hemingway/14/thumbnail.jpg“This is the story of a poor, young Cuban boy who grew into a man and gained the trust and respect of a famous American author, whom he loved like a father. A man he called ‘Papa.’’—from the Preface In 1996 René Villarreal returned to Cuba to retrieve his memoir of his life with Ernest Hemingway at the Finca Vigia. Sadly, he learned that the manuscript and photographs had been lost. Determined to tell his story, Villarreal, together with his son Raúl, set about rewriting the account of how he came to be Ernest Hemingway’s majordomo, confidant, and friend—his Cuban son. Hemingway, called El Americano by the Cubans, moved into the Finca Vigia, an estate outside of Havana, in 1939. He allowed the village children to play on his property, and they soon became fixtures, caring for his pets, performing odd jobs, and running errands. Hemingway recognized René as especially responsible and attentive and made him household manager, or majordomo, in 1946 when René was only seventeen. For the next fifteen years, René ran the Finca, tending to Hemingway and his wife, Mary, and their visiting family and distinguished guests. Villarreal’s clear recollections offer up humorous stories of escapades and adventures with Hemingway as well as insightful comments on the writer’s work habits, moods, passions, and friendships. He also writes of Cuba before and after the revolution, capturing so well the sense of place and time. Scholars and readers of Hemingway worldwide will be caught up in this compelling story of a great friendship and will find insight into this complicated, fascinating, brilliant writer.</p
