Effects of PurePro Soy on Growth Performance and Fecal Dry Matter of Nursery Pigs
A total of 360 barrows (DNA 200 × 400; initially 12.3 ± 0.05 lb) were used in a 37-d study to determine the effects of a refined soy protein concentrate (PurePro Soy, Bunge; Chesterfield, MO) on nursery-pig growth performance and fecal dry matter (DM). Pens of pigs were randomly allotted to one of six dietary treatments in a generalized randomized block design with BW as a blocking factor. There were six replications for each treatment within pens of light pigs (initially 11.0 ± 0.02 lb) and six replications for each treatment within pens of heavy pigs (initially 13.7 ± 0.02 lb). There were five pigs per pen and 12 pens per treatment. Diets were corn-soybean meal-based with increasing PurePro Soy (0, 4.25, 8.5, 12.75, and 17%) replacing SBM in the diet. A sixth diet served as a positive control containing 8.5% enzymatically treated SBM (HP 300, Hamlet Protein; Findlay, OH) also replacing SBM in the diet. Treatment diets were fed in two phases from d 0 to 9 (phase 1) and d 9 to 23 (phase 2) followed by a common diet from d 23 to 37 (phase 3). On d 9 and 23, fecal samples were collected from the same three randomly selected pigs in each pen to determine fecal DM. There were no interactions of treatment and BW block, therefore interpretation is focused on the main effect of treatment. During the experimental period (d 0 to 23), ADG and F/G improved (quadratic, P \u3c 0.05) as PurePro Soy increased with the greatest improvement in ADG and F/G when PurePro Soy increased from 0 to 8.5%. Pigs fed 8.5% PurePro Soy or 8.5% HP 300 had similar performance. Additionally, ADFI increased (linear, P = 0.019) as PurePro Soy increased. Overall (d 0 to 37), increasing PurePro Soy improved (quadratic, P = 0.014) ADG and tended to worsen (linear, P = 0.087) F/G and increase ADFI (quadratic, P = 0.080) with the greatest response at 8.5%. For fecal DM, increasing PurePro Soy increased (linear, P = 0.035) fecal DM on d 9, and pigs fed 8.5% PurePro Soy had greater (P = 0.011) fecal DM than those fed 8.5% HP 300. In summary, replacing SBM with 8.5% PurePro Soy improved nursery pig growth performance and fecal DM

Survey of Biosecurity Practices Applied to Feed Ingredients Imported from ASF/CSF Positive Countries in the U.S. Swine Industry
The importation of feed ingredients poses a well-documented threat of introducing African swine fever virus (ASFV) and Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) to the U.S. swine industry. The Biosecure Ingredient Imports Program, part of the U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan (SHIP), developed a survey focusing on the importation of non-bulk feed ingredients to assess biosecurity practices from manufacturing in ASF/CSF-affected regions through arrival at a feed manufacturer in the United States. Four key biosecurity aspects were evaluated and graded based on a tiered system with four levels (1 to 4 stars), with biosecurity practices addressing traceability, biosecurity at origin, biosecurity upon arrival, and quarantine facility capabilities. Traceability ensures tracking from source to a U.S. warehouse. Biosecurity at origin includes using clean containers and disinfection protocols, and upon arrival, damaged products must be managed to prevent cross-contamination. Quarantine involves storing imported ingredients in a separate and biosecure manner for at least 30 days under controlled temperature. Eight swine production companies participated in the survey, revealing varying biosecurity practices. Data showed that non-bulk ingredients from ASF/CSF-affected regions are widely used in U.S. swine diets, with significant variations in biosecurity measures. Approximately 45% of these ingredients did not undergo any biosecurity measures and thus are characterized as being in the 1-star tier, 43% adhered to a 30-day holding period without temperature control, and only 12% were stored at or above 68°F. Amino acids, vitamins, and trace minerals comprised the bulk of imports, typically receiving 1- to 3-star biosecurity ratings. Enzymes, feed additives, and antibiotics generally were held to a higher biosecurity tier, with 2- or 3-star ratings. China was the primary source of non-bulk feed ingredients from ASF/CSF-affected regions, with ten countries identified as suppliers. The survey highlights the reliance on ASF/CSF-affected countries for non-bulk feed ingredients in the U.S. swine industry. While over half of these imports undergo some biosecurity practices, many do not meet critical holding time and temperature guidelines and are not always segregated from domestic ingredients. Although the risk of disease introduction through these imports is low, enhancing biosecurity measures is crucial to effectively mitigate potential risks
Just Pin It: Understanding the Dynamics of Pinterest Use, Motivation, Self-Efficacy, and Health Behaviors
Image-based social media platforms, such as Pinterest, have revolutionized how individuals seek, share, and interpret health information. Previous research suggests a link between consuming social media content and intentions to engage in health behaviors; however, it is unclear if individuals who actively seek health-related information on social media engage in healthier behaviors. This mixed-methods study explored the relationships among Pinterest use, motivations, self-efficacy, and health behaviors. Women participants (n = 227) completed surveys that included sociodemographic characteristics, motivation, self-efficacy, Pinterest use, and diet and exercise behaviors. Independent samples t-tests assessed differences in exercise behaviors, and multivariate analyses of variance determined differences in dietary behaviors. Open-ended short answers were coded using thematic analysis. There were no differences in dietary (p= .18) or exercise behaviors (p = .23) between Pinterest users and non-users. Curating health-related content was related to higher diet self-efficacy (r = .25), though there were no differences in dietary (p = .06) or exercise (p = .51) behaviors between Pinterest users with health-related boards and those without health-related boards. Four themes emerged from the qualitative data: (1) Motivation to change; (2) Construction of a health toolkit; (3) The best of intentions; and (4) Looking to the future. Findings suggest that health-related content is pinned to inspire health behavior change; however, just engaging with the content on Pinterest is different than applying the information to the point of behavior change
Translating Quechua Multilingualism and European Multilingual Intertextuality in the Short Stories of Edgardo Rivera Martínez
Quechua multilingualism is a significant feature of Andean literature written in Spanish, playing a key role as a marker of Indigeneity interacting with mestizo culture and the Spanish language. In the short stories of Peruvian author Edgardo Rivera Martínez (1933-2018), a mestizo, non-Indigenous writer, Quechua multilingualism is conveyed in different forms and has different functions. It interacts with European-language multilingual intertextuality to portray the tensions and convergences of languages and cultures in the Peruvian Central Andes. When tasked with translating Rivera Martínez’s multilingual short stories from Spanish to English, key questions arise, including the ways Quechua, as a multilingual element the author’s texts, interacts with Spanish and other European languages; what the different multilingualisms convey; and how we might render them into English for a diverse readership. In this essay, I discuss Quechua multilingualism and European multilingual intertextuality in Rivera Martínez’s narrative, and the translation approaches he uses to craft his stories in Spanish. I turn to translation approaches to rendering multilingualism in his work in English translation and suggest that reading and translating his fiction must consider the work Quechua multilingualism performs as an expression of Andean Indigeneity in Spanish-language Andean literature

Exploring Identities of Extension Faculty and Educators as Science Communicators
This research explored the relationship between University of Idaho (UI) Extension educators and faculty’s social identity as science communicators and their most-used communication type. This non-experimental, sequential, mixed-method study with a qualitative priority utilized surveys and interviews to gather data. This paper will focus on the qualitative and mixing components of the study. We used stratified purposive sampling based on location and most used communication type to select participants for interviews and conducted interviews to understand their social identities as science communicators. We identified five main themes: continual development, technology, research dissemination, evaluation for motivation, and community relationships. We employed a cross-case comparison to find relationships between themes and communication type. Science communication identity and communication types have distinct relationships with science communication identity being seen as an adaptable and flexible title. Participants reported diverse motivations for communicating science, but all emphasized their roles in sharing reliable, research-based information with constituents. Participants discussed the value of skill-building and expressed interest in additional training to become more effective science communicators and better meet the needs of the communities they serve. Additional research to understand the constituent perspective is warranted to explore how professionals are using science communication practices to align with the communication preferences of their audiences to achieve intended outcomes. Replicating this study with Extension professionals in other states would provide insight into a national understanding and application of science communication in Extension
