    Fifty Years of Considering Education: Looking Back and Looking Forward

    In recognition of 50 years of publication of Educational Considerations by the College of Education at Kansas State University, we invited submissions that examined the scholarship from those 50 years, and we invited forward-looking scholarship that anticipated the next 50 years. I am delighted with the contributions to this issue. We have an analysis of the theme of social justice as it manifested itself across the five decades of the journal’s existence. We have an overview of the representations of school-university partnerships, and we have a contribution focused on the presence of scholarship addressing African education. Finally, we have that forward-facing manuscript that places a post-pandemic lens over the issue of student engagement as we move forward into the next half century

    Fight, Flight, Freeze: The Impact of a Dyslexia Simulation on Preservice Teachers

    Teachers must have an understanding of dyslexia, including characteristics, assessments, and interventions, but also an understanding of the reactions the students may display when faced with these learning difficulties. In addition, teachers need to be aware of how their typical classroom practices may cause even further disruptions and challenges to the student rather than supporting them in their learning. This study asked preservice teachers to participate in the Experience Dyslexia simulation to gain new insight into not only the challenges faced by students with dyslexia regarding brain-based processing issues, but also how the classroom environment contributes to those difficulties. By completing the six stations and focusing on their personal reactions of fight, flight, or freeze, participants gained a deeper understanding of how they may see those similar types of responses in their students with dyslexia. Further, participants overwhelmingly indicated that experiencing this simulation will have an impact on their future teaching

    Some cell biological studies of Neurospora crassa have been limited by the rapid rates of hyphal growth and fusion. In this study, we investigated the causative mutation in the standard C24 allele of for (FGSC #9) and assayed the growth and circadian phenotype of the for strain under different nutritional conditions. We show that the for strain can be maintained as metabolically active single cells for 2 days before its growth advances into branched mycelia. This culturing system offers the potential to advance subcellular dynamic research and to facilitate greater understanding of N. crassa in the early developmental stages

    Effects of Dietary Acidifiers and Low Acid-Binding Capacity-4 (ABC-4) Formulation Strategies on Nursery Pig Performance and Fecal Dry Matter

    A total of 725 pigs (DNA 241 × 600, initially 13.0 lb) were used to determine the effect of dietary acidifiers and other low acid-binding capacity at a pH of 4 (ABC-4) formulation strategies on nursery pig performance and fecal dry matter (DM). At weaning, pigs were randomly allotted to one of five dietary treatments. There were five pigs per pen and 29 replications per treatment across two facilities. Pigs were fed experimental diets in two phases with phase 1 provided with a feed budget of 5 lb/pig followed by phase 2 diets fed until d 24 post-weaning. The first three diets were formulated to approximately 200 and 250 meq/kg in phases 1 and 2, respectively, by using three different formulation strategies. The three formulation strategies included: 1) lowering the Ca:P ratio by 0.20, 2) addition of 0.6% formic acid (Amasil NA; BASF; Florham Park, NJ), and 3) replacing whey permeate (Dairylac 80; International Ingredients Corporation; St. Charles, MO) with crystalline lactose. Fumaric acid (Primary Products Ingredients Americas LLC, Decatur, IL) was included at 0.46% for all low ABC-4 diets across both phases. Diet 4 was a high ABC-4 diet formulated to be 100 meq/kg greater than the low ABC-4 diets. The first four dietary treatments contained 110 ppm of Zn provided by the trace mineral premix. Diet 5 was diet 4 with the addition of 3,000 and 2,000 ppm of Zn from ZnO in phases 1 and 2, respectively. Following phase 2, all pigs were fed a common corn-soybean meal-based diet until the completion of the study on d 38 post-weaning. In the experimental period (d 0 to 24) and overall (d 0 to 38), pigs fed the lactose replacement strategy had decreased (P \u3c 0.05) ADFI compared to pigs fed the other low ABC-4 formulation strategies.In the experimental period (d 0 to 24) and overall (d 0 to 38), pigs fed the low ABC-4 diets had improved (P ≤ 0.022) F/G compared to pigs fed the high ABC-4 diet. In the experimental period (d 0 to 24), pigs fed the diet containing ZnO had increased (P ≤ 0.001) ADG and ADFI compared to pigs fed the high ABC-4 diet without ZnO. On all fecal collection periods (d 8, 17, and 24), pigs fed the low ABC-4 diets had increased (P ≤ 0.024) fecal DM compared to pigs fed the high ABC-4 diet. In summary, low ABC-4 diets improved feed efficiency and fecal dry matter regardless of the formulation strategy. However, replacing whey permeate with crystalline lactose decreased feed intake. In addition, pigs fed diets containing fumaric and formic acid had the same ending BW and ADG as those fed the high ABC-4 diet with ZnO

    Evaluating the Effects of Increasing Sodium Diformate on Nursery Pig Growth Performance and Fecal Dry Matter

    A total of 360 weanling barrows (DNA 200 × 400, DNA; initially 13.1 ± 0.12 lb) were used in a 38-d growth trial to evaluate the effects of dietary sodium diformate on nursery pig growth performance and fecal dry matter. At weaning, pigs were randomly assigned to pens with five pigs per pen and 12 pens per treatment. There were six dietary treatments formulated to provided none, 0.40, 0.60, 0.80, 1.00, and 1.20% sodium diformate (Formi NDF, ADDCON, Nordic AS, Porsgrunn, Norway) added at the expense of corn. Experimental diets were fed in three phases: phase 1 from weaning to d 9, phase 2 from d 9 to 24, and phase 3 from d 24 to 38. From d 0 to 24 (phases 1 and 2), increasing sodium diformate improved (linear, P = 0.001) F/G. However, sodium diformate did not affect (P \u3e 0.10) ADG or ADFI. From d 24 to 38 (phase 3) and overall (d 0 to 38), there was no evidence of differences (P \u3e 0.10) in any of the growth performance criteria. There was no evidence for differences (P \u3e 0.10) in fecal DM on d 9. However, fecal DM decreased (linear, P \u3c 0.05) as sodium diformate increased on d 24 with pigs fed 0.40% sodium diformate having the highest percentage fecal DM. Additionally, there was evidence for a main effect of day (P \u3c 0.001) with fecal DM being lower on d 24 compared to d 9. In conclusion, these data suggest increasing sodium diformate has the potential to improve feed efficiency in the early nursery period but did not affect performance in the late nursery

    Evaluation of a Blend of Phytochemicals and Carboxylic Acid When Complete Feed and Soybean Meal Were Inoculated with Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus, Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus, and Seneca Valley Virus 1

    Chemical mitigants have been found to decrease virus concentrations in feed and ingredient matrices. Continued research is needed to identify the appropriate inclusion levels and application time for different viruses in these matrices. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate different inclusion levels of a product utilizing a synergistic blend of phytochemicals and carboxylic acid (PCA) when applied either pre- or post-inoculation of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and Seneca Valley virus 1 (SVV1) to complete feed or soybean meal. The experiment was designed in a 2 × 2 factorial with a PCA-based product, (Finio, Anitox Corp. Lawrenceville, GA) applied either before virus inoculation (pre-inoculation) or after inoculation (post-inoculation) at either 3.5 or 5.5 lb/ton. On d 0, samples of the respective matrices were weighed in 50 g aliquots and added to 500 mL bottles. The PCA blend was applied to the pre-inoculation samples at their respective inclusion levels and 50 μL each of 1×107 TCID50/mL PEDV, 1×108 TCID50/mL PRRSV, and 1×108 TCID50/mL SVV1 were added to the post-inoculation samples. All bottles were shaken and allowed to sit at room temperature for 24 hours. On d 1, virus was added to the pre-inoculation samples and chemical mitigants were added to the post-inoculation bottles. Half of the samples were immediately processed (0 hr) and the other half were incubated at room temperature for an additional 24 hours (24 hr). Samples were processed and aliquots were analyzed via a triplex PCR assay at Kansas State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Cycle threshold and proportion of PCR positive were analyzed using SAS GLIMMIX v 9.4 (SAS, Inc., Cary, NC), with each virus and matrix combination analyzed individually. In both soybean meal and complete feed an application time × inclusion level interaction was only observed for PRRSV at 0 hr, where less PRRSV RNA was detected (P \u3c 0.05) in the post-inoculation samples at either 3.5 or 5.5 lb/ton as compared to the pre-inoculation or control samples. For other viruses at 0 hr in complete feed and soybean meal, the post-inoculation samples had less detectable PEDV or SVV1 RNA (P \u3c 0.05) than the pre-inoculation samples. As time continued (24 hr), both pre- and post-inoculation samples had less detectable PEDV RNA (P \u3c 0.05) than the controls in complete feed. Interestingly, the positive controls had less detectable viral RNA (P \u3c 0.05) at 24 hr in soybean meal compared to either the pre- or post-inoculation samples. This effect is hypothesized to reverse as the mitigated samples have a greater contact time. Overall, the use of a PCA-based product reduced viral concentrations in complete feed and had a variable effect when applied to soybean meal. More research is needed to understand the contact time required for viral reduction and the infectivity of these samples at defined contact times
