    Prominently Portrayed? A Content Analysis Exploring Queer Representation in Food and Agriculture Magazines

    Agriculture and food magazines share stories with readers that offer an insider perspective to the people and processes involved in getting food from farm to table. While queer issues have been long studied in the media, representation of queer people in stories has largely been missing from empirical research. This content analysis examined agriculture and food magazines for stories with queer representation to determine the framing, tone, and prominence of queerness in the articles. Articles were selected from the top ten agriculture magazines by circulation, and the top ten food magazines by circulation. Each of the 20 online magazine websites were searched for queer keywords, resulting in a sample of 72 articles from 2016-2022. Findings indicated most stories used a dominant equality/queer representation frame and discussed queerness in a positive or neutral tone. Both magazine types had a surge in publishing queer stories in a specific month of the year (June), but also in the most recent year (2022). Additionally, findings indicated food magazines are more likely than agriculture magazines to use queer words or symbols in the headline, subhead, images, or image captions. Implications exist for shaping the culture and representation of queer stories in agriculture and the food system, and agricultural communicators who want to include queer perspectives and voices

    Impact of an Adaptive Worksite Diabetes Prevention Trial on Health Action Process Approach Outcomes regarding Dietary Intake and Physical Activity

    Weight loss, through a reduction in energy intake and increase in energy expenditure, can reduce diabetes risk in people with prediabetes. However, lifestyle change can be challenging even with positive intentions. The Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) theoretical framework bridges the intention-behavior gap by targeting planning behaviors and strengthening efficacious beliefs for behavioral change. In the current trial, an adaptive design was employed to examine differences in HAPA measures (i.e., planning and self-efficacy) regarding the target behaviors of dietary intake and physical activity (PA). Adults ≥ 21 years old with overweight or obesity and prediabetes (n = 185) received the standard Group Lifestyle Balance (GLB) intervention during the first month of treatment. Weight loss responders (lost \u3e 2.5% of weight) at week five remained in GLB during weeks 5-16; slow responders (lost ≤ 2.5%) were stratified to the adaptive GLB Plus (GLB+) intervention during weeks 5-16. GLB+ augmented self-regulatory skills and practices consistent with HAPA. We conducted mixed model analyses with a group-by-time interaction for fixed effects at four months. GLB experienced greater improvement in behavioral intention for both diet and PA, planning behaviors (action and coping planning) for diet, and self-efficacy beliefs (action and maintenance self-efficacy) for PA compared to GLB+ (all ps \u3c .0125). However, GLB+ also experienced statistically significant improvement in planning and self-efficacy and in energy intake and food group servings (all ps \u3c .01). Whereas an adaptive intervention can be advantageous in improving HAPA measures and food choices, greater focus on increasing PA is needed. Additional research may help to determine effective PA strategies

    Effect of Early Planting on Soybean Yield: 2023 Growing Season

    In an effort to increase soybean yield potential, early planting dates have been promoted as a management practice that can increase yield of soybeans. Early planting of soybeans can be a relative term, meaning late April/early May for some soybean producers in Kansas, but this study’s definition of early planted soybeans is late March/early April. Theoretically, the earlier planting date could allow for more vegetative growth and interception of more light before blooming, increasing the yield potential. With the improvement of soybean seed treatments to protect seed when emergence is slowed due to cool and wet conditions, the early planting may be a viable option. The planting dates in the three years of the study have shown soybean yields as either stable or increased when planting in late March/early April compared to planting in mid-to-late April and early-to-mid May

    Mixed-Grass Vegetation Response to an Extreme Wildfire Event

    The wildfires of the 2021-2022 dormant season in Ellis, Osborne, Rooks, and Russell counties occurred under extreme weather conditions. However, most every dormant season contains conditions suitable for wildfires to occur: dried vegetation, low humidity, and potential for days of elevated temperatures and winds. A portion of the 122,000-acre area that burned in the December 2021 Four County Fire also burned in March 2017 during the dormant season. Dormant-season wildfire removes benefi­cial vegetative soil cover during the dormant season, and has ecological and financial impacts in the following growing seasons. Prior published dormant-season wildfire data showed that yield reductions the growing season after the fire ranged from 25% to 65%, depending on the time, location, and the main grass species consumed in the fire. Less soil cover and less production in the years after the fire may require lower stocking rates, which ultimately results in lower potential income. The Four County Fire burned approximately 12% of the range and pasture acres in these four counties. Therefore, fires of this magnitude have significant ecological and financial impacts on regional commu­nities. To date, only a few historic wildfires in northwest Kansas have data available regarding rangeland response to those wildfires. This study was designed to provide producers with information for ecological and grazing animal planning for the years following dormant season wildfires in western Kansas

    Surtain Herbicide Evaluation in Corn

    This study investigated the use of Surtain herbicide compared to commercial standards for efficacy in corn. All herbicides evaluated provided good control of kochia, Russian thistle, and green foxtail. Surtain and Trivolt each controlled common sunflower and Johnsongrass 90% or more, whereas only Surtain controlled Palmer amaranth more than 80% throughout the season. Relative to the untreated control, grain yields were greatest when Surtain was applied preemergence at the higher rate, as an early postemer­gence treatment, or when it was followed by a postemergence treatment
