Incorporating Autoethnography for Empowerment and Transformation in Graduate Education

The purpose of this proposed presentation is to explore the potential of autoethnography as an innovative teaching approach in graduate education to bridge personal experience with academic rigor and quality. By integrating autoethnography into graduate teaching approach, the authors of this presentation argue that instructors can foster critical self-reflection, promote ethical inquiry, and encourage students to situate their own life experiences within larger social, cultural, and academic context

Situating Generative Knowing Theory in an Emerging Performative Paradigm

This presentation develops generative knowing theory by situating it within an emerging performative paradigm. We illustrate this connection through our own scholarship and explore further implications for adult educators

The purpose of this exploratory case study is to consider how a mindfulness approach to teaching adults could impact adult learner persistence, engagement, and well-being during traumatic times

Substance Use Prevention among Asian American Adolescents: A Systematic Review of Literature

Asian American (AA) adolescents are the fastest growing population in the United States yet understudied in substance use and prevention research. This systematic review aimed to summarize existing literature published through January 2024 on programs targeting substance use prevention among AA adolescents in the U.S. Four independent raters screened 1,008 records with a systematic process for reconciling disagreement following PRISMA guidelines, yielding 9 articles (6 studies) for systematic review. The studies utilized a range of different designs (e.g., RCT, single-arm trial, and qualitative) and assessed heterogeneous outcomes, including cognitive (e.g., risk perceptions, attitudes, mood, and self-efficacy), and behavioral outcomes (e.g., drug use initiation and frequency). Four of the six programs reported promising changes in substance use intentions, with program strategies including psychoeducation, skills training, and photovoice. The small number of studies reported in this systematic review underscores the need for more preventative efforts for AA adolescents, particularly culturally tailored substance use prevention programs targeting alcohol, illicit drugs, and emerging substances

Developing Empathetic Preservice Teachers Using Literary Fiction

This purpose of this research focuses on the use of literary fiction as case studies to develop empathy with preservice teachers in a teacher education program using the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Empathy, defined in three manners as cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and compassionate empathy, is an essential attribute of educators. Not all preservice teachers have similar experiences as their students and need opportunities to develop empathy. This article includes personal reflections over two-years of teaching literacy methods and represents the researcher’s learnings as they aim to position preservice teachers to empathize with students with dyslexia. The instructional journey of the researcher is discussed including the use of three literary fiction to cause preservice teachers to consider the perspectives of three protagonists living and learning with dyslexia. As a result, four themes emerged from the researcher’s observations describing what the preservice teachers learned: holistic, genuine, perception, and professionalism

Transforming African Higher Education: Precolonial Foundations, Colonial Legacies, and Postcolonial Innovations

This article critically re-evaluates the evolution of African higher education by tracing its development across three key epochs: precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial. Drawing on over 120 secondary sources–including legal ordinances, policy documents, archival records, and peer-reviewed literature–the article adopts a historical-analytical and decolonial framework to interrogate how education systems were constructed, disrupted, and reimagined over time. It challenges the Eurocentric myth that higher education in Africa was introduced by European colonizers, instead spotlighting rich precolonial traditions such as the Per Ankh in Egypt (c. 2000 B.C.E.), Islamic institutions like Al-Qarawiyyin (859 C.E.) and Al-Azhar (969 C.E.), and the Ethiopian Orthodox education system, which fostered advanced instruction in theology, medicine, astronomy, and literature. The colonial era imposed restrictive education models designed for political control and economic subjugation, marginalizing indigenous knowledge and languages. This legacy persists in postcolonial Africa, where curricula, policies, and institutional frameworks often mirror colonial prototypes. By triangulating sources and comparing colonial education systems across British, French, and Portuguese contexts, the study illustrates both shared and divergent impacts. It concludes that structural reform through the revitalization of indigenous knowledge systems, community-based models, and language-inclusive policies are a pathway toward sustainable, sovereign, and Afrocentric higher education

Integrating Artificial Intelligence and Wearable Technology in Soccer Training

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with wearable sensors has revolutionized soccer training. Real-time data on various physical, physiological, and biomechanical metrics such as acceleration, heart rate, and movement patterns are collected by the Local Position Measurement (LPM) and Electronic Performance and Tracking Systems (EPTS) sensors. By inputting these data into Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, specifically Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Support Vector Machines (SVMs), and Decision Trees (DTs), coaches can precisely analyze performance, manage injury risks, and develop personalized training plans for their athletes. Additionally, coaches can optimize training intensity, improve tactical decisions, and reduce injury risks. Furthermore, these sensors track recovery features such as sleep quality, stress levels, and mood, resulting in a comprehensive approach to managing athletes. As AI and wearable sensors continue to improve, their applications in soccer training will also continue to advance, resulting in improvements in player development, injury prevention, and team dynamics. The present paper discusses the role of AI integration with wearable sensors in soccer training by emphasizing their effectiveness in improving player conditions and team success

Defending the Role of Formal Education in South Africa: A Theoretical and Argumentative Perspective on Reform

This article critically examines the ongoing public debate about the relevance of the formal education system in South Africa. Critics argue that formal education is outdated, ineffective in addressing unemployment, and disconnected from market needs. Using Human Capital Theory as a framework, this paper challenges these claims and argues that the education system is not inherently flawed but requires targeted reforms to better serve societal and economic demands. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature, this study highlights the role of education in skill development, economic growth, and social mobility. It also addresses criticisms by advocating for the integration of vocational training, digital transformation, and curriculum adjustments to align with the Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions. The paper concludes with recommendations for policy adjustments to enhance education\u27s responsiveness to evolving market and societal needs
