Corn and Soybean Production – 2023 Summary
Soybean and corn varieties were tested in replicated field trials at the Southeast Research and Extension Center in Parsons through the Kansas State University variety testing program. In total, 21 corn varieties and full-, mid-, and short-season maturity checks were tested. Fifteen full-season and nine double-cropped soybean varieties were tested, with three maturity checks ranging in maturity from 3.1 to 5.2. Fourteen sunflower varieties were also tested. The 2023 summer crop growing season was nearly average for both temperature and rainfall. Yields from the variety tests were slightly lower than the 13-year average
Significant Predictors of Suicide Rates in the United States: A Multiple Regression Analysis
Inspired by Stack\u27s (2021) research, this study investigated the influence of 19 variables on suicide rates across all 50 United States. The variables included political party, gun ownership, registered guns, religion, alcohol consumption, state safety, depression, marriage, divorce, domestic violence, race, mean elevation, and region. Regression analyses revealed that gun ownership significantly impacts suicide rates, with stricter firearm laws correlating with lower suicide rates. Other crucial contributors to suicide risk were alcohol consumption, domestic violence, marital status, divorce, mean elevation, and political party affiliation. The five most statistically significant predictor variables were gun ownership, divorce rates, percentage of White individuals, percentage of Black individuals, and mean elevation. While gun ownership, divorce rate, and mean elevation increased suicide rates, the percentage of Black and White individuals living in a state helped reduce suicide rates. The results emphasize the importance of considering multiple variables when formulating preventative strategies and policies to address this complex issue. By understanding the intricate interplay of these factors, policymakers and mental health professionals can develop targeted interventions to reduce suicide rates effectively
Time Orientation and Mental Accounting: Examining Serial Mediation Effects of Financial Literacy and Impulsivity
With a wide variety of complex financial assets and securities available in the market, individuals often struggle with their financial planning due to a lack of financial literacy, high impulsivity, and short-term time orientation, hampering their financial satisfaction. The current study examines the yet unexplored indirect effect of investors\u27 time orientations on mental accounting through financial literacy and impulsivity. We conducted a cross-sectional survey and collected 162 active investors’ responses via structured questionnaires distributed in both online and offline portals across India to gauge their financial literacy, time orientation, impulsivity, and mental accounting. We used Smart PLS-4 software along with structural equation modeling to test the direct and indirect effects of time orientation on mental accounting. Findings support the statistical significance of the indirect effect of time orientation on mental accounting through financial literacy and impulsivity. In other words, the way an individual perceives time has an impact on the categorization of incomes and expenses. Moreover, impulsiveness and financial literacy play a key role in between. The findings of this study contribute to the discipline by advancing a model for predicting investors’ mental accounting, as well as partially answering the question of why, if mental accounting is so important, many individuals do not use it for their investment decisions. This study’s findings offer suggestions on how investors can be influenced to use this model. Moreover, this study suggests how financial therapy and counseling can play a critical role in improving the financial health and well-being of individuals

Assessing Planting Date Effect on Soybean Yield and Dry Down for Different Maturity Groups and Planting Dates in Eastern Kansas
The United States (US) ranks as the second-largest global soybean producer. Especially in Kansas, soybean relevance relates to the double-cropped soybean after winter wheat. While this cropping system allows efficient land use, late planting dates may reduce soybean yields. For this reason, understanding the impact of planting dates on yield is crucial for Kansans farming. Our goals were to: 1) explore the interaction between planting date and soybean maturity group (MG); and 2) characterize the soybean seed filling and dry down processes in Kansas. An experiment was carried out in Topeka, under irrigation during the 2023 growing season. Five genotypes and two planting dates (early and late) were tested. Our results showed that delaying the planting date increased moisture lost per growing degrees days (GDD). Furthermore, late planting date requires less GDD than an early planting date, resulting in a faster dry down, affecting the dry down process. Furthermore, our study showed significant impact of MG for both planting date on seed yield. The highest yields were achieved by MGs 3.4, 3.8, and 4.2, regardless of the planting dates, averaging 84, 81, and 90 bu/a for the early dates, and 80, 77, and 80 bu/a for late planting dates. The shortest and the longest MGs (2.8 and 5.2) presented yield penalties

Corn Irrigation with Reduced Well Capacity
One major challenge for western Kansas irrigated corn producers is sustaining or enhancing yields under declining well capacities or limited water supplies. Irrigation systems in the Central Great Plains can no longer supply peak irrigation needs throughout the summer months. Producers should rely on soil water reserves to keep the crop from water stress. Irrigated crop production is essential for agriculture in Western Kansas. Corn is the most popular commodity crop grown under irrigation (around 50% of the irrigated acres). Nevertheless, with declining water levels in the Ogallala aquifer, optimal application of limited irrigation water and sustainability practices are necessary. This study evaluated how irrigation management can be used to improve productivity when well capacity is limited and insufficient to meet crop requirements fully. The objective of this study was to determine the grain yield response of corn to different irrigation capacities. Field studies were conducted at the Kansas State University Northwest Research and Extension Center near Colby, KS, during the 2023 growing season. The study was a factorial design of irrigation capacities (limited to 8, 9, and 10 inches per season and a dryland treatment) with a corn hybrid (DeKalb DKC62-69RIB) with excellent drought tolerance. Grain yields increased by using a drought-tolerant hybrid with a planting rate of 28,000 seeds/a. Average grain yields increased from 194.7 bu/a to 202.3 bu/a when irrigation capacity increased
