Lena James: Mystery on the Movie Set

    No full text
My MFA thesis “Investigations of Adolescence” addresses how adolescent children have beautiful minds worth developing, both for their own sake and the future of our society, using psychoanalytic and sociological critical theories. Moreover, adolescents can think critically when adults give them space to do so. My paper also speaks to the idea that adulthood is not being the pinnacle of solid decision making. Further, I argue that literature with both prose and imagery is an important tool in growing critical thinking skills. My manuscript titled “Lena James and the Mystery on the Movie Set” further expands on these ideas by utilizing a hybrid illustration and text format that requires the reader to interact directly with the text, to think critically, and to problem solve

    Transposing Activism Through Folk Music

    No full text
American folk music has captured the essence of everyday people’s struggles and continues to be a resilient form of protest. Singer-songwriters of the genre have created timeless interpretations of their circumstances that listeners can easily relate to across generations, sometimes through reimaginings and adaptations. A greater understanding of what makes folk protest music so resilient is offered by examining the historical and musical contexts surrounding some of the most well-known anthems. Facing turmoil at home and abroad, American folk music has been influenced by wars and social and political movements, particularly affecting marginalized groups. Folk music’s lyrics are insightful records of sentiments shared by people throughout these tumultuous eras in American history. Time and technology have broadened the scope of folk’s soundscape, but traditional American folk music continues to resonate because of its connections to public memory and national identity. This essay is but an introduction to the chronicles of American folk music and its lasting impact, demonstrated by selected lyrics of songs that can be found at the link following the conclusion

Birth Order and Elementary School-Aged Children’s Compliance Tendencies

Under the direction of Dr. Seung-Hee Han Previous research has found that children\u27s higher compliance is associated with later positive developmental outcomes such as less socio-emotional problems. Birth order differences are often considered a related factor in compliance development (van Berkel et al., 2023.) To determine the effect of birth order, we conducted a pilot study by recruiting nine early elementary school-aged children. Before observation, parents were sent online surveys to understand demographics and gauge children’s personality. Children’s behaviors were observed while doing the Clean-up Toys Task in the lab (Kochanska & Kim, 2013). Parents and children were interviewed individually to gauge their personalities and compliance at home. Our results have shown no relation between birth order and compliance tendency

    Fat Feminists

    Get PDF
This thesis presents the original play Fat Feminists alongside a critical reflection exploring the intersection between feminist theory and lived experience. The play depicts two friends confronting their 50th birthdays in a society that has historically valued them primarily for youth and beauty. Through their journey, the work examines how women navigate the terrain of aging in a culture that continues to prioritize female appearance despite decades of feminist progress. The accompanying critical paper interrogates the disconnection between feminist theoretical ideals and everyday reality, drawing particularly on bell hooks\u27 Feminism is for Everybody to frame the discussion. The paper traces my development as a playwright in parallel with the evolution of the play itself, documenting how my search for authentic artistic voice mirrors the protagonists\u27 quest to redefine their power beyond conventional beauty standards. By juxtaposing dramatic narrative with scholarly analysis, this thesis contributes to ongoing conversations about embodied feminism, aging, female friendship, and the challenges of living feminist values in contemporary society. It ultimately argues that the hypocrisies and contradictions women navigate are not failures of feminism but rather evidence of its continuing necessity

I Roll to Attack the King: An Examination of Far-Right Dissent and TTRPGs in the Contemporary Age

    Get PDF
Far-right ideologies have become more prevalent, both in the political sphere as well as fictional and fantasy spaces. This project analyzes the rise of far-right ideology within tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) and offers potential reasons as to why this shift is occurring. Through the analysis of three Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) campaigns from TTRPG show Dimension 20, combined with psychological and sociological research, this work highlights the importance of actions within TTRPGs and their impact on our actual reality. Many may act within the confines of fantastical worlds such as TTRPGs in a way that aligns with far-right ideology because they agree with these ideas. However, this project offers an additional explanation for the inclusion of far-right ideologies within TTRPGs; as a means for players to fight back against these ideas, in such a manner that could encourage real world dissent against real world far-right groups and ideals. I argue that this fantastical dissent has the potential for positive, real-world applications for acting against harmful far-right ideologies
