Additive micromanufacturing and dynamic characterization of copper microlattices
Microfabrication technologies are vital for the manufacturing of computer chips, electronic devices and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). The most common methodology for microfabrication is using ultraviolet (UV) based expose-and-etch based lithographic methods. This method, though ubiquitous in several industrial applications, is only suited for fabricating 2.5D architectures and true 3D architectures such as springs, helices or lattices cannot be obtained. In this presentation, I will introduce a recent additive micromanufacturing method that is based on localized electrodeposition of microscale metal droplets.

Miniaturization effects on the tensile behavior of multicrystalline and polychristalline nickel-based superalloy: Influence of grain size, free surface and precipitation state
Surface effects on the mechanical response of polycrystalline materials are particularly important for miniaturized components due to their high surface-to-volume ratio. The influence of a free surface on the mechanical response of materials has been extensively studied on different polycrystalline model materials. A significant decrease of the tensile properties (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, strain-to-failure) has been observed with the reduction of the specimen thickness [1-4]. This evolution in tensile properties is called polycrystalline-to-multicrystalline transition by A. Thompson [2] and is mainly attributed to the presence of the free-surface allowing the escape of dislocations. This leads to a significant decrease in the density of dislocations in the surface grains compared to the core grains [3,4]

An efficient microcarrier based Adeno-associated virus production method
Adeno-associated viruses (AAV) are reported to have a great potential for gene therapy. However, a major bottleneck for these kinds of therapies are efficient methods for viral production.
The purpose of the present study was to explore how a production-cell culture attached to microcarriers in a stirred tank bioreactor could provide a solution for efficient AAV production. Microcarriers can provide an accelerated process development platform where an already high product yielding adherent cell clone can be directly transitioned to suspension production. Higher cell specific AAV yields are often reported for adherent cell systems compared to cells in suspension, and microcarrier-based culturing is well established for anchored cells in larger scale. Taken together, using microcarriers as an AAV production platform has the potential to increase cell specific yields and increase volumetric productivity thus lowering the total cost of goods for AAV based therapies.
