Improving Asthma Management Behaviors in School Nurses through Facilitator Training and Supported Implementation
Get PDFUncontrolled asthma in middle school age children and adolescents results in increased morbidity and often impairs a student’s ability to participate in school activities. School absenteeism is an unintended consequence which in turn can impact academic success. School nurses can improve student asthma outcomes through effective asthma management behaviors (AMB’s). The purpose of this multi-phase quality improvement DNP project was to improve both knowledge and confidence, and thereby improve AMB’s in Kentucky school nurses. A convenience sample of twelve nurses participated in the project. The American Lung Association’s (ALA) Kickin’ Asthma training was extended to all Kentucky school nurses who utilized the Kentucky school nurse Listserv. A paired t-test was used to calculate pre-post intervention scores. Post-intervention scores for both knowledge and confidence were significantly improved. The mean for pre-knowledge is 22.58, and the mean for post-knowledge was 27.75, with n = 12. The mean for pre-confidence was 21.70 and the mean for post-confidence was 28.10 with n = 10. The p values were significant, knowledge (p \u3c .001), and confidence (p \u3c .001). Findings suggest that increased asthma education for Kentucky school nurses can improve asthma outcomes
Sociological Explanations of Coronavirus Incidence Rates in Kentucky Counties
Get PDFThis study explores sociological explanations for Covid-19 incidence rates among Kentucky Counties. The authors examine how incidence rates varied pre/post-Omicron variant based on a county’s educational attainment, poverty rates, political perspective, health status, and place status (Appalachian status, metropolitan status). The authors discovered that none of these variables effectively explained differences in county level Covid-19 rates before Omicron. However, once Omicron became the prevalent variant in Kentucky, metropolitan status, Appalachian status, two measures of poverty rates, political perspective, and three measure of educational attainment all predicted differences in mean Covid-19 incidence rates

Preparing New Graduate Nurses for Patient Rescue An Experimental Quantitative Study
No full textA patient deterioration educational program was offered to new graduate nurses. Pre and post self-confidence scores were compared, and competency performance was evaluated during a simulation. The results indicate that most of the participants successfully demonstrated simulation competencies, and there was a statistically significant improvement in self-confidence scores. Based on these findings, education on identifying and managing patient deterioration that includes a simulation experience may be beneficial

The Relationship between Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder and Criminal Responsibility
Get PDFThis original contribution to practice explores the significance of schizophrenia spectrum disorder, one of the most severe psychiatric disorders recognized in the DSM-5. This condition affects over 50 million people worldwide and is amongst one of the most common psychiatric illnesses diagnosed in criminal responsibility evaluations to date. Nonetheless, there is limited comprehensive literature specifically examining the relationship between schizophrenia and the insanity defense. Information provided in this literature review aims to fill that gap and act as a resource for clinical forensic practitioners who may encounter related cases. Specifically, this document will begin by introducing schizophrenia spectrum disorder and will be comprised of a detailed description of the disorder, symptomatology, how it presents clinically, diagnostic considerations, comorbidity/differential diagnoses, and cultural considerations. Next, I will discuss the prevalence of crime, violence, and the involvement schizophrenia spectrum disorder plays in the legal system. The succeeding section will be a review of criminal responsibility and the insanity defense to lay the foundation for understanding how this work is conducted in practice. Lastly, I will end with a redacted case study to provide a real-world example of the nuances to this type of criminal, legal evaluation, exemplifying the relationship between a specific psychiatric disorder, schizophrenia spectrum disorder, and the law
Improving Hepatitis C Virus Screening Through Bundle Interventions

Hepatitis C (HCV) is estimated to impact 57,500 people in the US and is a leading infectious disease worldwide. The purpose of this DNP Project is to increase provider confidence in screening, early detection rates and ultimately timely treatment for patients at risk for HCV served within a rural Federal Qualified Health center (FQHC).
Interventions for this project included bundle steps consisting of provider and staff training of Hepatitis C guidelines for screening, use of an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) HCV flowsheet and lab template, revision of preventative health form, and self-efficacy survey to evaluate provider and nursing confidence in HCV screening and care. Paired t-tests were conducted to evaluate the impact on bundle interventions on care providers and staff overall knowledge, confidence and referral practices among providers caring for patients at risk for HCV. The project data analysis reflects an extreme statistically significant difference between both pre and post survey variables t (14) =5.152 p = 0.0001, 95% CI (-10.39, -4.28). Pre intervention self-efficacy score (n=15, with mean value 20.133) and Post scores (n=15, with mean value 27.47). Findings from the project reflect the importance of staff and provider training and the use of effective strategies to importance HCV screening uptake and referrals
Pride: A Review of LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy Techniques and Recommendations for Clinical Practice
Get PDFDespite recent advances in legal protections for and increases in social acceptability towards LGBTQ+ individuals, they continue to experience widespread prejudice and discrimination and seek therapy more often than their heterosexual counterparts as a result. As more and more LGBTQ+ people sought out therapeutic services, psychological research in the field of LGBTQ+ affirming therapy began to develop in order to meet these needs. Although the number of articles and studies conducted in this field has grown exponentially since the start of the 21st century, a sizeable gap between research and application remains. Research often provides vague suggestions without discussing specific clinical recommendations. Until discussion shifts to emphasize the practical aspect of LGBTQ+ affirming therapy, the mental health needs of this large and diverse group of people will not be met. Therefore, the major goal of this project is to review the intersection of mental health and LGBTQ+ people over time and conclude with specific recommendations for providing LGBTQ+ affirmative care across a variety of presenting concerns and treatment settings. It is worth noting that LGBTQ+ affirming therapy is not a specific theoretical orientation or form of treatment on its own. Rather, it is a way of providing therapeutic treatment that takes into consideration the history of LGBTQ+ individuals, the impact of intersectionality, unique individual experiences, and affirms that nobody is less than anybody else, regardless of their sexual identity and/or gender identity. The cultural identities of our clients should be praised, encouraged, and used to inform how we provide mental health services. These conditions represent the heart of LGBTQ+ affirming therapy, which has the potential to have a significant positive impact on countless individuals who need our help as clinicians
The Difficulties of Representation: Examining Portrayals of People with Intellectual Disabilities in Film
No full textThis paper examines how several different movies portray people with intellectual disabilities. A central question is: how should film productions represent people with intellectual disabilities? What are common themes in these representations? How do productions go about ensuring faithful representation? Has representation and visibility improved?
The movies Rain Man, Forrest Gump, I am Sam, Peanut Butter Falcon, and Music, were all examined and researched. The way they were produced and the way that actors researched to play the roles of intellectually disabled characters were examined.
It was found that while many themes were shared, as were visual cues to indicate an intellectual disability, the methods of preparing and researching to represent people with intellectual disabilities varied greatly. While some productions and actors were able to reach out and meet with people who had intellectual disabilities, others researched less and had little to know contact with disabled people. Another trend is that more actors with intellectual disabilities are being hired to play characters with intellectual disabilities. Still, some producers and directors are continuing to cast actors without disabilities in those roles. In an attempt to make good films that includes well-researched representations that don\u27t belittle people with disabilities, it would make good sense to cast intellectually disabled people in the roles of intellectually disabled characters
