How Do Anxiety, Stress, Impulsiveness, And Sleep Quality Affect Memory

    Get PDF
Memory is a critical cognitive function that enables individuals to retain, recall, and apply knowledge across various contexts. Different memory systems, including working memory and long-term memory, collaborate to process and store information. Factors such as stress, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and impulsiveness can impact memory encoding and retrieval, especially in college students, whose academic success depends heavily on memory performance. This study examined the relationship between these everyday factors and memory performance by analyzing brain activity during memory encoding using Electroencephalography (EEG) and the Difference due to memory (DM) event-related potential (ERP) effect, to understand how stress, sleep, anxiety, and impulsiveness influence cognitive processing and recall. 51 college students recruited through Eastern Kentucky University’s SONA system completed surveys assessing stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and impulsive behaviors, and participated in a memory task while EEG data was collected. The results highlight the complex relationship between these factors and memory processes, particularly emphasizing the role of anxiety in memory encoding

Good for Her: Catharsis and Empowerment in Contemporary Literature

    Get PDF
A recent trend in readership within online discourse communities is the emergence of the genre called “Good for Her,” which contains themes of transgression beyond traditional expectations of socially acceptable feminine behavior by situating revenge arcs to celebrate actions that otherwise would have been perceived as reprehensible. The emergence and popularity of the genre in the post-2016 sociopolitical climate in the United States reflects the demand for marginalized communities to see versions of themselves represented in texts in which the protagonist avenges herself in the face of patriarchal oppression. The genre stems from canonical literary tropes also created in the midst of social unrest, and as the genre serves as a tool for marginalized communities to express their collective rage and highlight systemic injustices, the genre is worthy of consideration for literary merit despite its newness and composition of contemporary texts

Implementing Nature-Based Occupational Therapy in School-Based Settings

    No full text
In school-based settings, Occupational Therapists work with students on various areas related to a student\u27s Individualized Learning Plan (IEP). As technology use increases in academic settings for young students and time spent outdoors decreases, the exploration of a potential solution to this relationship was discovered. Nature-Based Occupational Therapy is an emerging practice area focused on incorporating outdoor play and materials from the outdoors into treatment sessions while still addressing areas of concern to increase a child’s independence in daily occupations. This capstone project focused on four objectives: Design a nature-based activity guide for students in the school system setting that can be implemented during Occupational Therapy sessions, in the classroom as a group, or at home. Educate students, parents, and teachers about sensory integration and developmental milestones regarding a student’s IEP goals, and how this can be achieved in alternative ways, along with traditional teaching methods. Evaluate the effectiveness of a nature-based activity guide for a child’s multi-sensory stimuli responses, while increasing the development of age-appropriate developmental milestones for fine/gross motor skills. Practice sustainability and how to responsibly interact with nature, while also having fun.https://encompass.eku.edu/otd-capstone-posters/1063/thumbnail.jp

Enhancing Learning Experiences of Neurodiversity and Implementing Sensory Strategies for Children in a Daycare Setting

    No full text
The purpose and focus of this capstone project were to identify what tools and strategies were being utilized within Creative Beginnings Child Development Daycare Center that provided support for children with disabilities specifically Sensory Processing Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder. After completion of observations and evidence-based research the goal of the project was to create, educate and implement sensory tools and strategies into the daycare classrooms to improve inclusivity and increase support and participation throughout the day for the children and staff. Sensory tools and strategies were implemented within several daycare classrooms that provided support for atypical children by resulting in increased participation and focus during classroom activities, improved transitions, and improvements in self-regulatory behaviors as meltdowns occurred. Research evidence supports that there is a need for occupational therapy collaboration within the daycare setting. As occupational therapists play a critical role in addressing sensory challenges in school settings and can provide direct interventions, training, and education to support children’s sensory processing needs.https://encompass.eku.edu/otd-capstone-posters/1068/thumbnail.jp

Learning Outcomes of Hybrid In-Person and At-Home Orthosis Fabrication Instruction for Occupational Therapy Students

    Get PDF
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, occupational therapy students at one university received all orthosis fabrication education through an in-person laboratory-based environment supported by clinicians and instructional videos. Due to the pandemic restrictions, orthosis fabrication labs for occupational therapy students were transitioned to a hybrid in-person and at-home supported lab. Presently, there is no research investigating how a hybrid in-person orthosis lab and at-home orthosis fabrication experience impacts the professional practice skill development of occupational therapy students entering the workforce. This research examined the learning outcomes of participation in a hybrid orthosis fabrication experience consisting of one in-person laboratory-based experience and one at-home supported experience (instructional videos, written instructions, without instructor supervision). The research also explored the implications of this hybrid learning experience for future curriculum development. This qualitative study included two components: (1) Interviews with six occupational therapy graduates; (2) 26 student reflections following the hybrid learning experience. The results of this study highlighted three overarching themes: orthosis skill development; transferable skills development; future considerations for implementing a hybrid learning method. A hybrid learning approach provided unique opportunities for the scaling of independence and productive struggle to develop student competence in orthosis fabrication. This research provided insights for occupational therapy curriculum developers to modify educational approaches and effectively support students as they develop into competent occupational therapists

Survey of Pain Curriculum Among Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Programs in the United States

    Get PDF
Occupational therapy practitioners address pain management across settings, populations, and the lifespan. Occupational therapy practitioners offer unique contributions to pain management through biopsychosocial approaches, targeting supported self-management and occupational engagement. Comprehensive pain education is necessary to prepare entry-level occupational therapy practitioners to address pain in practice, yet no standards exist in entry-level occupational therapy education. This survey describes the status of pain-related education in entry-level occupational therapy programs across the United States. A total of 41 entry-level occupational therapy programs completed the survey. Total instructional time for pain content was reported to be an average of 9.68 hours, ranging from 1 to 30 hours, indicating significant variability. Average lecture (4.88 hours) and lab-based (5.05 hours) time devoted to pain content were similar. More time was devoted to teaching pain interventions (4.91 hours) than pain assessments (2.82 hours). Most programs integrated pain content throughout the curriculum (73%). One program utilized a standardized pain curriculum (International Association for the Study of Pain Occupational Therapy Curriculum). Open-ended questions revealed a breadth of evidence-based resources, pain assessments, and interventions covering all domains of the biopsychosocial model of pain. The majority of faculty (61%) felt their current amount of pain education was insufficient, citing the need for increased time and educational activities for pain education across all program years. Given the essential and unique role of occupational therapy practitioners in pain management, improving pain education and practitioner competence is an important consideration across entry-level occupational therapy education. Further discussion is needed regarding educational standards and entry-level occupational therapy curricula relating to pain management

Exploration of Student Reflections using the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS) as an Intervention Planning Framework

    Get PDF
Teaching intervention planning is enhanced with an intentional course design that incorporates critical thinking in order to prepare the next generation of occupational therapy practitioners. The context for this study was a physical disabilities intervention course for an entry-level occupational therapy program that used Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning as a basis for learning outcomes. A novel formative intervention planning assignment required students to use the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS) as a framework to guide their thinking. A qualitative retrospective content analysis of student reflections at the end of the course revealed that the RTSS added value to their learning. Two main themes emerged from the student reflections; Growth takes Practice to use this framework effectively and the RTSS was perceived as a Bridge from Classroom to Practice. These findings support the possible benefits of integrating this framework into occupational therapy curricula as a means to help students further develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills. Providing opportunities to scaffold learning may enhance the student learning experience and integration of the framework into future intervention planning and delivery

Modern Times Causing a Decline in Work Ethic?

    No full text
Work ethic refers to a collection of principles and values that guide an individual\u27s behavior in the professional realm. It encompasses a range of attributes, including but not limited to integrity, responsibility, quality, discipline, and teamwork. When employees exhibit a strong work ethic, they are more likely to be viewed as reliable and trustworthy, which can enhance their reputation and lead to increased opportunities for advancement. Additionally, a company with a reputation for promoting a strong work ethic among its employees is likely to be viewed as a desirable employer, which can help attract top talent and drive overall success. Americans work 25% more hours, take less vacation time, and are retiring later relative to other workers throughout the world. Today data shows that the work ethic among many Americans has declined (Lappin, 2022). An interview conducted with an individual of Generation Z questioning how work environment has affected work ethic, the individual stated, “Working in an environment that is negative, unwelcoming, and making you feel as if you are not as important as other positions can really affect the efforts an individual has on their work.” Negativity in the workplace has been found to be the leading cause for individuals to leave their current jobs. For example, meaningless work, toxic work environments, inability to advance within the company, low salary, poor management, etc. An individual\u27s work ethic plays a crucial role in determining their success in their career as it serves as a driving force behind their productivity, fosters a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment in their work, and ultimately contributes to the growth and success of the organization they work for
