Faith, Fear, and Feminism: The 1970s Women’s Movement and the Rise of Southern Baptist Fundamentalism
Get PDFThis paper examines the relationship between the 1970s women’s movement and the 1979 conservative takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention. The discussion includes initial reactions to the women’s movement, the conservative emphasis on biblical inerrancy, and the ordination issue. Paul Pressler, Paige Patterson, Adrian and Joyce Rogers, and many other prominent Southern Baptists are also discussed. The thesis also includes some discussion on the connection between race and gender hierarchies within the Southern Baptist Convention. Finally, both the 1978 Consultation on Women in Church-Related Vocations and the 1984 “Kansas City Resolution” are analyzed. The central investigation of this thesis was the connection between Southern Baptist opinions regarding the women’s movement and the 1979 “fundamentalist” takeover. The final results highlight the impact of conservative fears of modernization on the direction of the denomination in the late 1970s and early 1980s. As the secular world was drastically changing, Southern Baptist conservatives found it increasingly important to secure their denominational traditions---including the tradition of “God-ordained” hierarchies. The last few pages of this thesis are designated to examining the lasting impacts of the conservative takeover. Reimagining Work: Examining Work Under the Fair Labor Standards Act
Get PDFThe Fair Labor Standards Act is a document created in 1938 to protect workers in the United States. This literature review points to the idea that times have changed. The research presents a timeline to understand the fight for labor standards in the United States. Americans at one point in time were working 14-hour days leaving little to no room for anything else. The research presented offers context to working standards in America. The paper examines the Fair Labor Standards Act through a multi-perspective lens to understand how exactly the document meant to protect workers might be contributing to long working hours in the United States. Moreover, the United States stands out among developed nations for its long workweeks, raising concerns about worker well-being. Not only do Americans resort to higher working hours but there is also a culture of overwork. However, there has been a recent shift in working hours, where resignations hit an all-time high in 2022. This signals that American working culture can be problematic and should be restricted to become more conducive for United States workers and businesses. The solution proposed is to add a maximum number of working hours to the FLSA of 1938. The maximum number of hours proposed is 48 as this allows for flexibility while taking the burden off employees
Far Beyond Words: Analyzing Information Gained Through Nonverbal Communication Across Neurologically Diverse Populations
Get PDFNonverbal communication (NVC) refers to all communicative acts except speech that convey messages through signals. Humans perceive and express emotional information through nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, proximity, body language and movement, gestures, eye contact, and haptics. NVC can be just as if not more informative than verbal language as long as the observer is aware of the communication’s meaningful cues. Recognizing the varying nonverbal communicative abilities of a neurologically diverse population allows for more significant interpersonal communication. Despite the different trends of NVC comprehension for populations with varying levels of neurological ability, these paralinguistic cues prove to be extremely significant for gaining communicative information. Namely, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), hearing loss/deafness, and right hemisphere brain damage (RHD) from stroke impact one’s ability to effectively receive and express information through nonverbal communication. Considering the various ways NVC is used across neurologically diverse populations is vital for gaining insight on a person in a variety of positions, both personal and professional. Service providers, educators, and caretakers must recognize trends in NVC in order to effectively send and receive information to neurologically diverse populations
Play like a Girl! A Then and Now Comparative Analysis of Title IX in Collegiate Athletics: An Oral History Collection
Get PDFTitle IX in collegiate athletics aims to provide female athletes with the same opportunities as their male counterparts, through equal resources, financial scholarships, viewership, etc by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender. This is accomplished through certain compliance standards and a Three Prong Test. However, the results of a literature review show that Black female athletes, female coaches and administrators, and male athletes whose sport has been cut still don’t receive fully equal opportunities. Through the creation of an oral history project with the William Berge Center and Special Archives at Eastern Kentucky University, personal stories and experiences related to Title IX and the importance of continuing to recognize female athletes will be highlighted, with a specific emphasis on how success is defined in the culture surrounding sports today. An analysis of what Title IX looks like currently compared to what it looked like prior to and then when Title IX was passed is one of the main goals of this project. While women are continuing to fight the same fight that has been happening for over decades, what is valued in women’s sports has changed, especially since the number of girls participating in sports had increased dramatically since the passage of Title IX
The Effects of Gamma Glutamyl Cysteinyl Ethyl Ester on Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Traumatically Injured Rats
Get PDFPrimary injury is the original point where the impact force affects axonal tissue. Secondary injury is often the main complication in patients suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI). Consequences of secondary injuries include oxidative stress, DNA damage, and protein oxidation, which can impact overall brain function (Moppett). Gamma-glutamyl cysteinyl ethyl ester (GCEE), a glutathione mimetic, has been used as an antioxidant to reduce oxidative stress. This study aims to determine if GCEE is neuroprotective against moderate TBI at extended time points. Results from this work will provide insight for determining the best extended time point to administer treatment. This study aims to compare the amount of carbonylated proteins in rats given a moderate TBI and treated with GCEE within 90 minutes and 120 minutes of the injury
Quantification of excess carbonylated proteins was measured using a Bio-Rad slot blot apparatus and the methods used by Reed (Reed, 2016). The resulting membrane was analyzed. Results showed that the samples treated with GCEE at 90 minutes had less protein oxidation compared to saline at 90 minutes. However, GCEE administered at 120 minutes had protein oxidation levels like samples treated with saline at 120 minutes
Different but Synergistic Effects of Union and Manager Leadership on Member Job Satisfaction
No full textExisting research has tended to overlook the diverse roles of union leadership in contributing to member attitudes. Drawing on the social information processing theory, this study examines how union leaders’ (shop stewards) service-oriented leadership relates to member job satisfaction. To clarify the mechanism underlying this relationship, this study focuses on union instrumentality as a mediator. The research also examines managers’ ethical leadership as a conditional factor in the relationship between union leaders’ service-oriented leadership and member job satisfaction through union instrumentality. To test our hypothesis, this study analyzed the results of a survey of 603 respondents from two branches of the Korean Metal Workers’ Union. The findings of this study indicate that union instrumentality is the link between service-oriented union leadership and member job satisfaction. Additionally, the strength of the mediated relationship between the aforementioned factors through union instrumentality is contingent on managerial ethical leadership. This study contributes to an integrated understanding of the way in which service-oriented union stewards and ethical managers influence member job satisfaction through their leadership

Many researchers focus on reconciliation and forgiveness, which creates a narrow focus and does not cover those who do not wish to remain in their relationship after experiencing partner infidelity. This research examined the process participants utilized to overcome their experience of their partner’s infidelity. This research looked at the actions participants took to overcome partner infidelity and relationship dissolution that worked as well as what did not work. Understanding State And Community Operated Juvenile Programs In Rural And Urban Communities Throughout Kentucky
Get PDFThis thesis explores the challenges faced by state and community-operated juvenile programs across urban and rural geographies in Kentucky. Through qualitative methods, including interviews and site visits, it uncovers the nuances of program implementation and staff perceptions of their impact on juvenile delinquency. Findings highlight significant differences in resource allocation, community engagement, and programmatic challenges between rural and urban settings, as well as between state and community (non-Department of Justice funded) initiatives. The study reveals that while geographical and operational disparities exist, the commitment to rehabilitation over punishment remains a common thread. Recommendations for policy enhancements and future research directions are presented, emphasizing the need for adaptable, inclusive, and community-focused approaches to juvenile justice. This work contributes to the broader discourse on juvenile justice reform, advocating for nuanced understanding and strategic adaptations to meet the diverse needs of Kentucky\u27s youth
