An Intervention For Youth Impacted By Parental Incarceration: A Mentoring Program Effectiveness From The Caregiver’s Perspective
This study explores the effectiveness of the Amachi mentoring program in supporting children impacted by familial incarceration from the caregivers perspective. Using a qualitative approach, we conducted two focus groups with three participants in each to assess the program\u27s impact across four key areas: behavior, emotions, school performance, and social interactions. We hypothesized that Amachi would have a positive impact on the children they serve. The findings indicate that caregivers perceive the program as beneficial, suggesting potential improvements in various aspects of the children’s lives. These results highlight the potential of the Amachi program to support the development and resilience of children facing the challenges of parental incarceration
Why PTSD is not discussed within Law Enforcement
Recently in society, there is a notice that law enforcement officers are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Those who suffer from PTSD must meet Criteria A through E and then meet the exposure criteria. There are many potential reasons as to why these officers are not coming forward to receive help. Police officers struggle to come forward because of stigma and police subculture. There is a perceived stigma that those who come forward to receive any help for mental health struggles are weak individuals. The police subculture plays into that stigma because if other officers see an officer going to receive help, they may think that officer cannot handle the stresses of the job and question his ability to perform. In this paper there were two studies conducted an anonymous interview and an anonymous survey. The interview reported that there was stigma present in law enforcement and was a key factor in officers not coming forward. The survey did not have a large number of responses so no inferences could be made, but the results were promising. There are different types of treatments that are available for PTSD that have shown promising results to reduce PTSD. There needs to be continued research in PTSD in law enforcement and more treatments
Corporate leverage during COVID-19
The article examines the impact of the health pandemic on global firm leverage from 2020 to 2021 and finds firms decreased their leverage during the pandemic via long-term and short-term debt. As COVID-19 limited external funding opportunities, firms use internal capital to reduce debt. Further analysis indicates that this effect is significant for financially constrained firms. The results are robust to different proxies
Past, present, and future of international joint ventures
International Joint Ventures (IJVs) are a popular mode for a company to enter a foreign market. Research on IJVs has significantly grown in the past two decades. In this study, we applied several bibliometric analyses (i.e., performance analysis, co-citation analysis, and co-word analysis) to systematically examine 379 IJV studies from 1982 to 2021. Our performance analysis identifies influential articles, authors, and theories in the domain. In the co-citation analysis, after dividing the IJV literature into three periods (i.e., 1982–2001, 2002–2011, 2012–2021), we unveil the thematic evolution in the IJV literature. Our co-word analysis outputs the most popular keywords. We employ social network analysis to identify the disconnections among the keywords, and provide future research opportunities based on these disconnections. Altogether, this paper provides an integrative view of IJV research and advances the domain
A Conservative Treatment Protocol for Thumb Carpometacarpal Osteoarthritis
This capstone project sought to construct a written conservative treatment protocol for thumb CMC OA, emphasizing evidence-based practices. As a hopeful hand therapist, clinical observations led me to realize thumb CMC OA was a common condition present in many cases. A written protocol would be beneficial to both client and practitioner to increase knowledge and awareness of best practice while educating clients as they seek treatment. Initial development of the protocol included communication with current hand therapists to better understand needs of both client and practitioner. Following this, a thorough analysis of current literature was completed for best evidence based practices. Evidence and feedback provided was incorporated together to ensure protocol was meeting needs of both practitioner and clients. Within the protocol, supplemental education was provided to include evidence-based exercises and resources such as a patient handout to improve education of condition and adherence to protocol. Conserving function being a key goal to improve overall long-term outcomes and lessen the likelihood of needing surgery in the future. This protocol provides succinct but thorough information that is universally helpful to both new and experienced therapists and students like myself, seeking to pursue hand therapy in the future. To continue fostering success within the community, more thorough protocol documentation is needed to develop plans of care and protocols, contributing to the success of the OT community at-large.https://encompass.eku.edu/otd-capstone-posters/1055/thumbnail.jp
Prenatal and Postnatal Experience Focusing on Women’s Mental and Physical Health
This capstone experience was about creating an activity enrichment program for the hospital\u27s swing bed program. This program can easily be transferred to other areas as need be but for this experience it was directed towards an inpatient rehab swing bed program. For the creation of the program data collection was used, a total of three assessments were utilized, the SLUMS a cognitive assessment, the geriatric depression scale to measure depression levels, and an activity interest checklist was used to gather information on meaningful activities that those participating enjoyed. Once data collection was finished, a continued literature search was conducted combining research and literature to find evidence-based activities that were enriching for patients to participate in. Twelve months of activity calendars were created, and activity analysis was used to break down each activity into instructions and materials lists. A google drive was created for the enrichment program divided by month. An about me sheet was also created to give additional information about meaning activities of the patients to use for the program. A QR code was created for patients to scan when they are ready to discharge home to give the hospital data related to this newly created enrichment program. This QR code will be available once the enrichment program is implemented. An infographic explaining the importance of enriching activities was also created to educate staff and can be easily handed out in a staff meeting or in-service. A physical copy of the program printed in binders and digital copy on a google drive was given to the therapy department upon completion of this capstone experience for the hospital to begin implementing this program on their swing bed unit.https://encompass.eku.edu/otd-capstone-posters/1058/thumbnail.jp
Grow as We Go: Education, Efficacy, and Empowerment for Life Skills Trainers
In this ALE experience, I sought to bridge the existing gaps in research pertaining to most effective approaches and methodologies for rehabilitation in an adult day treatment setting, specifically in those with a traumatic brain injury. Fragmented and variable care compounded by poor communication are barriers to rehabilitation. However, it was also noted that traumatic brain injury survivors\u27 long-term recovery was positively impacted by joining a peer network such as NeuroRestorative. Following this analysis, a needs assessment was conducted on-site at NeuroRestorative in Lexington, KY to enable more smooth daily programming and cohesive planning with life skills trainers. Goals included observing current operations and daily functions as well as developing a tool kit for existing employees consisting of schedule, group activities, and associated curriculum. This resulted in an innovative, occupation-based 30 day program, consisting of 3 unique groups (cognitive, art and exploration, independent living skills) and their associated activities, organized in an online format. Along with this, an employee in-service program was utilized to educate on the benefits of the program as a whole. Fostering increased organization and consistent planning on behalf of life skills trainers will increase daily client participation and effectively integrate community based rehabilitation services.https://encompass.eku.edu/otd-capstone-posters/1067/thumbnail.jp
Measures of Mood: Adaptations for Adults with Developmental Disabilities and/or Severe Mental Illness
The COVID-19 pandemic was a source of anxiety and depression for many people, and for some it exacerbated existing mood and anxiety symptoms. Measurement of symptoms of anxiety and depression can play an important role in intervention to decrease these symptoms. However, to ensure validity of these measures, one must be able to understand the language of the screeners. An adapted Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Item Scale were created for usage with adults with developmental disability and/or severe mental illness who may have difficulty understanding the language of the original versions of these measures. A study was developed to measure the perceived benefit and ease of administration from a clinician’s perspective. Results indicate that these measures may be helpful in measuring symptoms of depression and anxiety. The limitations of this study and future directions for the measures are discussed
Factors contributing to the use of references to diversity, inclusion, and gender issues in undergraduate economics courses: Findings from the sixth national “chalk and talk” survey
This study uses data from the sixth national quinquennial survey on teaching and assessment methods in economics, also known as the “chalk and talk” survey, to examine, for the first time, how instructor, departmental, and institutional characteristics may contribute to the use of references to diversity, inclusion, and gender issues in undergraduate economics courses. Findings suggest that undergraduate students are differently exposed to these issues depending on the characteristics of the instructors, departments, and institutions. Our work provides a baseline for supporting targeted interventions to increase the use of issues related to diversity, inclusion, and gender in the economics classroom
Workplace Wellness: Exploring Effective Stress Reduction Strategies in the Workplace
With the workplace becoming increasingly fast-paced and competitive, stress is a common issue that affects a significant percentage of workers and costs businesses billions of dollars each year. This research reviews the literature to identify the typical stressors that employees across various professions face. These stressors include but are not limited to the work environment, poor communication, and struggles with work-life balance (Zippa, 2023). The research discusses how these stressors can impact a person\u27s mental and physical health Furthermore, stress can affect the workplace by reducing worker productivity, motivation, and energy levels, which are all associated with burnout (American Psychological Association, 2023). After conducting the literature review on workplace stress, we conducted a short open-response questionnaire to gain insight into how administrative employees and management at Eastern Kentucky University and a corporate office manage their own stress while also working to alleviate the stress of their employees. To maintain a healthy and happy work environment that promotes employee satisfaction and retention, it is imperative to take the steps necessary to mitigate and manage stress effectively. Through the information gained in the literature review about the causes and effects of stress and insight from the questionnaire, this research aims to give insight into how workplace wellness has been and can be achieved
