AUTHORS
The CALIFORNIA WESTERN INTERNATIONAL LAW JOURNAL welcomes the
submission of unsolicited manuscripts concerning international legal affairs.
Manuscripts should be submitted to the Executive Lead Articles Editor,
CALIFORNIA WESTERN INTERNATIONAL LAW JOURNAL, 350 Cedar Street,
San Diego, California 92101. Conformity with the following format will be
appreciated:
1. FORM. Manuscripts must be typed and double spaced. Footnotes
should be submitted separately and conform to the same format as the text.
Allow margins of at least one inch on all sides of the typed pages.
2. CITATIONS. Textual and citation form should comply substantially
with The Bluebook (15th ed. 1991).
3. STYLE. The article and footnotes should be up-to-date at the time of
submission. The JOURNAL requires articles that are timely and provide an
original in-depth analysis of a topic rather than a summary of previous
research efforts.
4. VITA. The title page should include the author's full name, his or her
academic and professional affiliations, and the complete address and phone
number of the person with whom correspondence can be made.
5. ABSTRACT. Each manuscript should be summarized in an abstract of
not more than 150 words.
Manuscripts will be approved for publication in the JouRNAL only after a
Lead Article Board review. If any part of the paper has been published
elsewhere, the author must include this information at the time of submis-
sion. Submitted manuscripts will not be returned unless requested.
The CALIFORNIA WESTERN INTERNATIONAL LAW JouRNAL will do
everything possible to ensure prompt review of submitted manuscripts. It
will, therefore, accelerate the reviewing process considerably if manuscripts
conform to JouRNAL style.

Part I of this article discusses the legal system\u27s recognition of parental rights and enumerates the possible constitutional, statutory, and equitable theories available for protecting the parental rights of nonlegal parents. Part II considers the cases that have rejected the attempts by members of alternative families to use these theories to obtain this protection. Part III discusses the barriers to political power that will make it extremely difficult and time-consuming to achieve legislative change in these areas, and argues that the courts should use the means available to them currently to protect these nonlegal parents and their children while the legislative battles continue
