    Consciousness below SCUBA depths

    No full text
Abstract: Jennifer Mather has nicely summarized what is known about consciousness in shallow water octopods as well as what is known about shallow water squids and cuttlefish. However, once she gets below SCUBA depths, she misses out on most of cephalopod diversity. I have attempted to add this aspect and perhaps some evolutionary biology to this target article

The consciousness inherent in chasing your tail

Who is conscious and how do we know? Complexity in behavior and cognition is certainly a clue that cannot be ignored in identifying this trait, and as Mather’s target article shows, it is hard not to imagine consciousness arising in cephalopods. But how complex is complex? An alternative may be gleaned from the fact that all living things rely on negative feedback to navigate their worlds, and this requires all sentient beings knowing what is to be stabilized in reflection to themselves. If so, consciousness is a universal trait

    Elephant Management in Southern Africa

    No full text
On January 27, 2025, the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) released the draft National Elephant Heritage Strategy for public comment, outlining objectives for managing and conserving South Africa\u27s elephant population. With over 44,000 elephants in the country—31,000 of which are in Kruger National Park—debates over elephant population control, including culling and alternative management strategies, continue to evolve as experts assess their ecological impact and biodiversity role
