Social Equality with Jessica Flanigan

Social or relational egalitarians believe that humans should treat one another as equals. They’ll often point to democracy as the most realistic means of achieving their political goals in an egalitarian way. And this makes sense in theory. Everyone gets a vote, everyone gets an equal say. My guest today argues that democracy might not actually be the most equitable way of making decisions in a society. Jessica Flanigan is a philosopher at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond, and she says that egalitarians might want to rethink their commitment to democracy.

Investigating the effects of the Sugar Alcohol Osmolytes Glycerol and Erythritol in AOT Reverse Micelles
Get PDFWater is a polar molecule that participates in hydrogen bonding and proton transfer. Geometric confinement and water’s interactions with osmolytes (small water soluble compounds) affect the ability of water molecules to hydrogen bond and transfer charges. Study of this behaviour of water with different osmolytes in controlled environments will help us develop predictive models. In our study, we have prepared Sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelles (RM) in 2,2,4-Trimethylpentane (Isooctane). Our principle osmolytes were the straight chain sugar alcohols glycerol and erythritol. Study of water-osmolyte behaviour in the small and confined pool of a reverse micelle allows us examine the difference in water-osmolyte interaction in nanoscopic solution as compared to bulk solution. Additionally, we also aim to explore the effects of glycerol and erythritol in the stability of AOT reverse micelles

Get PDFThe Congo, placed in the heart of Africa, is filled with landscapes that are Often compared to descriptions of heaven. A country approximately the size of Western Europe with an estimated $24 trillion worth of minerals buried deep within the heart of darkness. The Congo could be the jewel of Africa, if not one of the most prosperous countries in the world. But a further gaze underneath the lush canopies of the Congolese jungle would find nothing but the ghosts of millions of Congolese victims to the Europeans and Americans. Whose greed and savagery turned this once thought of paradise into hell on earth. In order to gain control of the Congo’s political and economic systems, Belgium and the United States attempted to destabilize the Congo through orchestrated covert efforts to overthrow the government and assassinate Patrice Lumumba. The Congo has dealt with some of the 19th and 20th centuries\u27 most consequential and unnecessary tragedies, suffering unspeakable atrocities at the hands of Belgian and American tyranny. Nevertheless, after 75 years of suppression, the Congolese gained independence from Belgian colonial rule in 1960 . Despite the trope that all stories end happily, the history of Congolese Independence proves otherwise. Belgian and American policies did not prioritize Congolese freedom and independence, as they failed to align with their Cold War African economic and political agenda.
