    Mutual Relationships of Nanoconfined Hexoses: Impacts on Hydrodynamic Radius and Anomeric Ratios

    Although all hexose sugars share the same chemical formula, C6H12O6, subtle differences in their stereochemical structures lead to their various biological roles. Due to their prominent role in metabolism, hexose sugars are commonly found in nanoconfined environments. The complexity of authentic nanoconfined biological environments makes it challenging to study how confinement affects their behavior. Here, we present a study using a common model system, AOT reverse micelles, to study hexose sugars in nanoconfinement. We examine how reverse micelles affect the hexoses, how the hexoses affect reverse micelle formation, and the differences between specific hexoses: glucose, mannose, and galactose. We find that addition of glucose, mannose or galactose to reverse micelles that already contain water leaves their size smaller or nearly unchanged. Introducing aqueous hexose solution yields reverse micelles smaller than those prepared with the same volume of water. We use 1H NMR to show how the nanoconfined environment impacts hexose sugars’ anomeric ratios. Nanoconfined mannose and galactose display smaller changes in their anomeric ratios compared to glucose. These conclusions may provide insights about the biological roles of each hexose when studied under a more authentic nanoconfined system

    At DePauw University, students who need transcriptions of audio content have limited accessibility options. Currently, the university tries to help by hiring a student to attend classes and take notes, but this approach can be challenging and isn\u27t the most efficient use of resources. NoteScribe is a website that converts MP3 audio files into text, improving accessibility for everyone in a community. NoteScribe uses advanced speech-to-text technology with AI and MML to transcribe lectures, presentations, and other audio materials, turning them into text that\u27s easy to access for both students and faculty. Automating the transcription process, reduces the reliance on human note-takers and provide fast, accurate transcriptions. The site is user-friendly, allowing users to upload MP3 files and get their transcriptions quickly and easily. Users also have the option to translate the transcribed text into different languages, which is especially helpful for international students who might struggle with complex terminology. Additionally, each script and MP3 file can be added to a class folder that integrates with Moodle, making it accessible to everyone who needs it

    AccessMap

    The DePauw University campus, like many other college campuses, is expansive and consists of 36 buildings across 695 acres. Therefore, navigating through the campus can be challenging, especially for people with physical disabilities. While DePauw does make an effort to make its infrastructure accommodating to those with disabilities, these features might not be obvious or easy to find, resulting in difficulties getting around campus. Many students have reported having difficulty finding accommodations for their needs on campus. AccessMap is a web application designed to assist users in navigating the accessibility features at DePauw University. The website offers a detailed map of each building’s accessibility options, with markers highlighting key amenities such as elevators, ramps, and automatic doors. Each marker represents the relative location of the feature in the building and comes with brief descriptions, pictures, and reviews. AccessMap’s database is crowdsourced, relying on the DePauw community to upload information on available amenities. When accessing AccessMap, users can search the building they want to learn more about and click on a marker to see pictures of the feature, available descriptions, reviews, and ratings. Users can submit information to add another accessibility feature to the map, as well as descriptions and reviews for each accessibility feature, to enhance the map

    To Touch Time: U.S. Black Feminist Modernist Sculpture in the 1970s and 1980s

    Modernist propositions long have been understood as atemporal—somehow outside of time—or insistently hailing the future. This temporal framework suppresses the contributions of those excluded from modernist canons, particularly Black women. In this article, visual and material analysis of sculptural works produced in the 1970s and 1980s by U.S. Black women artists Beverly Buchanan, Senga Nengudi, and Betye Saar reveal how Black feminists have engaged with modernist protocols in order to redress cultural erasures of Black women. These practices exemplify Black feminist modernisms, or creative practices that unsettle the racist and sexist logics of dominant cultural institutions. Each of these artists utilizes haptic surfaces as a method for defying institutional modernism’s obfuscation of the past. The analysis focuses on Buchanan’s defiance of memorial erasures, Nengudi’s reenactment of labor, including in its historical forms, and Saar’s adaptation of generational memory-making processes. Ultimately, these artists’ rejection of a “timeless” modernism demands that viewers understand the present moment in relationship to a still-evolving past. In this way, Buchanan, Nengudi, and Saar position the present as an accumulation, rather than transcendence, of historical occurrences

    As a dialogic scholar interested in teaching language and communication practices using fiction, I happily approached the 2023 book Fiction and Pragmatics by co-authors Miriam A. Locher, Andreas H. Jucker, Daniela Landert, and Thomas C. Messerli. I was eager to see how others in the related field of pragmatics approached fiction as data, something happening in affinity fields like Communications, Literature Studies, and Sociology in the United States. I was pleased to discover a simple, well-organized treatise that considers fiction through the lens of pragmatics. As part of Cambridge Elements in Pragmatics series, this book is designed to be succinct and authoritative, providing readers with deep comprehensive introduction of fiction and pragmatics. In a slim 66 pages, the authors demonstrate how fiction is appropriate data for pragmatic analysis and outline a methodology for doing so within the context of various types of fiction. Showing not only that literary interpretation can gain insights from pragmatic analysis but also that pragmatic analysis of fiction gives insight to the work of pragmatics itself, Locher, Jucker, Lander, and Messerli have provided scholars in pragmatics and adjacent studies a launching point. Furthermore, this reviewer commends the authors and Cambridge Elements for providing open and free access to this high-quality text, allowing wide scholarly and educational use
