Fearfully and Wonderfully Made : The Reconciliation of the LGBTQIA+ Community to American Christianity
I explore in this paper the ways in which churches in the United States treat LGBTQIA+ issues and members in their congregations. To do so, I will focus on several case studies, including the Metropolitan Community Church, the Episcopal Church, the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and the United Methodist Church. These examples range from socially affirming to conservative and from traditional to contemporary worship styles. I plan to research the social landscapes of these churches and propose possible solutions for how other faith spaces can create more inclusive membership. I also address my own position as a queer Presbyterian and discuss the reform I hope to see in my denomination. Through studying the roles of gender and sexuality in American Christianity as a whole, I seek to discover more of how our sexual and religious identities intersect and how we can create experiences that uplift these identities mutually

With Love From Edna
With Love From Edna is a multimedia project born from a collaboration between Tony Barger of the Putnam County Public Library and JP Olsen, Director of the Pulliam Center. The project explores a dramatic World War I love story through a cache of letters donated to the library. It was funded by DePauw\u27s Asher Fund in the Humanities, the Putnam County Public Library, and the Pulliam Center, and it includes significant contributions from students Brooklyn Cornelius \u2726, Kyungmin Lee \u2724, and Eliana Alzate \u2726. Laurel Tilton, associate director of the Tenzer Center, was also involved, along with New York City-based podcast producer Rob Heath.
I\u27m happy with how it turned out, notes Olsen, and I\u27m particularly happy that this is a truly student-centered project. The students were all huge in the website development and overall production of this project.

Beyond the Matrix: Navigating the Implications of Nick Bostrom\u27s Simulation Hypothesis on Reality and Existence
Suppose for the sake of the argument we are all living inside of a simulation, is that a problem? Nick Bostrom, a Swedish philosopher has proposed the question of whether we are living in a simulation. Philosophers in the past have grappled with this concept, from Plato to George Berkeley. This concept is also readily seen in movies such as “The Matrix which is a science fiction film that explores the concept of a simulated reality. In the story, humans live in a simulated world created by sentient machines to distract and control them, while their physical bodies are used as an energy source. The idea of a simulated reality raises philosophical questions about the nature of existence, perception, and reality itself. For this paper, I will start with summarizing Nick Bostrom\u27s argument. Then, I’ll explore some of the implications which he mentions, such as questions of reality, the afterlife and God and the problem of evil. Lastly, I will explore the ethical implications of the simulation. Our hypothesis is that we are not living in a simulation, but that we could, in the future, create one. However, I also argue that we should not create one, regardless of the benefits because of the effects it will have on the intrinsic value of humans
Ecotoxicity evaluation using the avoidance response of the oribatid mite Oppia nitens (Acari: Oribatida) in bioplastics, microplastics, and contaminated Superfund field sites
Bioplastics are considered sustainable alternatives to conventional microplastics which are recognized as a threat to terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about the potential ecotoxicological effects of bioplastics on soil fauna and ecosystems. The present study assessed the toxicity of microplastics [Polystyrene (PS), Polyethylene (PE)] and bioplastics [Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Sodium polyacrylate (NaPa) on a key soil fauna Oppia nitens, a soil oribatid mite, and investigated the ecological relevance of O. nitens avoidance response as a valuable tool for the risk assessment of contaminated soils such as the Superfund sites. Findings showed that the mites’ net response indicated avoidance behavior such that in most cases as concentrations of micro- and bioplastics increased, so did the avoidance responses. The avoidance EC50 endpoints showed PS \u3c PE \u3c PVA \u3c NaPa, indicating higher deleterious effects of microplastics. High toxicity of PS in soils to O. nitens at EC50 of 165 (±25) mg/kg compared to bioplastics and other known contaminants poses an enormous threat to soil. For bioplastics in this study, there were no significant avoidances at concentrations up to 16,200 mg/kg compared to PS and PE which showed avoidance responses at 300 and 9000 mg/kg respectively, implying that bioplastics might be relatively safer to soil mites compared to conventional microplastics. Also, results indicated that long-term heavy metal pollution such as in contaminated Superfund sites decreased microbial biomass; a useful bioindicator of soil pollution. Furthermore, O. nitens avoidance of heavy metals contaminated sites demonstrated the ecological relevance of avoidance response test when assessing the habitat integrity of contaminated soil. The present study further supports the inclusion of the oribatid mite, O. nitens in the ecological risk assessment of contaminants in soil
