Ties that Bind: The Long Emancipation and Status Ambiguity in Early 20th-Century Southwestern Tanzania
Get PDFIn the 1890s, the slave and ivory trader Rashid bin Masoud established the settlement Kikole deep in what is now southwestern Tanzania. Kikole was strategically located near Lake Nyasa, a major slaving region. Masoud\u27s followers residing at Kikole were typically referred to as his slaves by German colonists and missionaries. Local oral histories today, however, define these followers as askari (soldiers or guards) or mafundi (technicians or specialists; in this case, in using weaponry). This article considers how recent expanded excavations at Kikole can help us better understand Masoud\u27s followers. Differences in housing investment and material access suggest status differences among residents: any single definition of Masoud\u27s followers may be inadequate. A broader concern addressed in this article is how we define slavery itself

Uni-Trade is an Android mobile application that is designed to address the problem of limited access to affordable items for students and the environmental waste problem caused by unwanted possessions. It does this by facilitating the buying and selling of used goods among students in a college or university campus. The Uni-Trade application provides a user-friendly interface for creating new listings, searching for items, and communicating with other users. It also includes features to ensure the safety and reliability of transactions such as seller ratings, secure payment options, and direct messaging between buyers and sellers. All listed items are stored securely in a remote database which updates the application in real-time as soon as such items are sold
MyLifter
No full textThe MyLifter web application targets the audience of those who want to get in shape, those who want to increase their strength in the gym, and those who want to share their accomplishments with their friends and others. There are applications similar to tracking progress in the gym, but it seems that it is more a personal goal and not a community driven goal. The application will allow each user to create an account and record their lifts, document their results, and create a community of other “lifters”. There are options to make the users’ content private, friends only and public. This grants the user freedom to share what they want with others. The application is a social media web application, whose purpose is to motivate oneself to get in the gym, see what one’s community is doing and be able to document results; there are features that track users’ goals, and how active they are within their communities. Within the application, each lift is posted to the main feed that can be seen by followers. There are a few ways a user can engage with the content: liking the post, commenting on the post, and sending a private message. Lastly, each user’s account has a goal that they can set up and observe how much progress they are making towards that goal

The website has a bank of different pets up for adoption and people can use filters to find a pet that matches their wants for their specific lifestyle. Based on either liking or disliking a pet, the user can add them to two different pet storage banks, which can be viewed later by the user Purrfect Pets makes it easy for users to find pets based on their profiles and chosen filters
Pygmalion
No full textWith the increasing amount of stress in our daily lives, it can be hard to find time for ourselves and reflect. Pygmalion, a web application, aims to remedy this issue by allowing users to write about their daily stresses and work on self-improvement. Pygmalion will primarily use the Vue.js framework for the front end of the application, allowing users to interact with a clean and easy-to-use interface. JavaScript, Firebase, Pinia, and other JavaScript packages such as Chart.js will be used to create and authenticate users, store user data, and create states for the application. Users can complete daily check-ins to keep track of how their day has been, as well as record if they have taken their medication. This data is then stored in Firebase for later analysis at the end of the week. Users can also use the app’s journal to describe how they are feeling, reflect on their day, and what they would like to work on for the next day. This entry is then stored in Firebase, which will enable the user to see their past journal entries in either a list or calendar format (Overseas Media). Users can also interact with each other in the forum section of the application, as well as send messages to each other (Traversy Media)

Cate, a play on replicate, can exist in a multitude of combinations, sitting on a remote server somewhere with a local desktop client to send files, just the local client for smaller use cases, or solely living on a server for commercial purposes. The music theory booklet Balliol 173A, fols. 74r–81v: scribal organisation of an early medieval theory miscellany
No full textUsing evidence of the quality of vellum, fascicle structure, scribal hands and illustrations, this article argues that the first fascicle of the music portion of Oxford, Balliol College, 173A (fols. 74–81) is a self-standing booklet, perhaps created to teach a scribe the basics of music theory and how to arrange text while leaving space for illustrations or examples. A new fascicle structure of the gathering is proposed that accounts for a previously unrecognised missing folio. An analysis of the contents of the gathering demonstrates that the theory booklet is a compilatio, with portions of the Musica disciplina (or it sources) acting as a frame to start and end the booklet, with other works (Pseudo-Jerome, Isidore of Seville and Cassiodorus) inserted in between. The final folios are completed with a number of small tractatuli, including the brief dialogue Diapason quid est? The contents of both the booklet and the entire music codex are closely paralleled in one of the smaller manuscripts collected into Oxford, St John\u27s College 188 and also Cambridge, Trinity College R.15.22. While it will be ever easier to study digital images of manuscripts and to create critical editions of well-defined texts, this article argues for the continuing importance of codicological study of manuscripts in situ to coordinate the placements of texts within the structure of codices
