Finding the Right Partner: Japan and Netherlands’ Relationship in the Edo Period

    Get PDF
This thesis paper seeks to enhance the understanding of the Japanese-Dutch relationship during the Edo Period. Despite Japan being a closed country during the Tokugawa Shogunate, it uniquely permitted the Netherlands as the only Western country to have access to trade. This decision was challenging to make due to Japan’s previous failed experiences with the West, such as the Portuguese, whose spread of the Christian religion led to major conflict. When Japan expelled out all Western foreigners, they allowed the Dutch to remain. The Netherlands then became the exclusive Western country allowed in Japan for over 200 years. This relationship brought benefits to both Japan and the Netherlands that promoted a long-lasting partnership. The central question this paper looks to answer is as follows: Why did the Japanese-Dutch relationship succeed when past Western and Asian engagements failed in Japan, and what were the exchanged benefits

Excavating the Emotional Non-State Organization in the Oxford Handbook of Emotions in International Relations

    No full text
This chapter focuses on the emotional dynamics of nongovernmental organizations’ (NGOs’) behavior and influence in international politics. Emotions appear frequently in foundational work on the role of civil society non-state actors, especially NGOs, in international relations (IR), yet they operate as implicit and undertheorized background assumptions. By harnessing key concepts and frameworks from within scholarship on emotions in IR, and by using shame as a primary illustration, the chapter identifies pathways for how to center emotions in understanding NGOs’ political influence in IR. It begins by interrogating prevailing conceptions of emotions as “tools” used strategically by NGOs in their advocacy. It then goes beyond that conventional view to make the case for taking NGOs’ fuller emotional lives seriously as well as to examine how hierarchy and power might determine the exercise of an NGO’s emotional politics vis-à-vis a number of actors

Sexual Violence in Higher Education: A Critical Discourse Analysis of University Policies

    Get PDF
As sexual violence has become increasingly visible in public discourse, scholarly research across disciplines has begun to critically examine how such cases are handled, ranging from the investigation processes, media reporting, and how the accused and accusing parties are impacted. While much of the existing linguistic research makes an important contribution to our understanding of the role of language in interpreting and evaluating sexual violence by focusing on the narrations of specific cases, one area of discourse that remains unexamined is that which is produced by those responsible for defining sexual violence and the protocols for investigating such cases. This study examines discourse on sexual violence found in US university policies and specifically focuses on contrasts between different discourse participants (i.e., faculty and students). Findings reveal that university policies frequently produce disparate discourse for students and employees that rarely acknowledge the hierarchical nature of faculty–student relationships. Given the increasing visibility of public discourse on sexual aggression and the power that such discourse has in influencing audiences, analyzing the linguistic strategies used to construct victims and perpetrators is crucial to our understanding of the various ways that sexual violence perpetuates injustice

Efficacy of photodynamic therapy as an adjunct to scaling and root planing on clinical parameters and microbial composition in subgingival plaque of periodontitis patients: A split-mouth randomized clinical trial

    Get PDF
Background The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) on clinical parameters and microbial composition in subgingival plaque of periodontitis patients. Methods Seventeen patients were included in this split-mouth randomized clinical trial. Sites with probing pocket depth (PPD) ≥5 mm in combination with bleeding on probing in different quadrants were randomized into the control group, the group with a single PDT application right after SRP, and the group with three repeated PDT applications 1 week after SRP. The subgingival plaque was collected for 16S rRNA gene sequencing at baseline, Week 2, and Week 8. Results Seventeen patients with 60 sites completed this 8-week follow-up, and 157 subgingival plaques were successfully analyzed by sequencing. Significant improvements were observed in two primary outcomes: PPD at Week 8 and subgingival microbial composition. Compared to the control group, the repeated-PDT group showed a notable improvement in PPD, substantial alterations in the microbial profile, including a reduction in α-diversity and anaerobic bacteria, and an increase in aerobic bacteria at Week 2. Secondary outcomes, such as clinical attachment level and sulcus bleeding index, also showed improvement at Week 8. Furthermore, both the single- and repeated-PDT groups exhibited a decrease in periodontopathogens and an increase in beneficial bacteria compared with baseline. Conclusion PDT promotes changes in the microbial composition of periodontitis patients’ subgingival plaque in a direction favorable to periodontal health, and repeated PDT is a promising adjunctive therapy for periodontal treatment

Recoil-order and radiative corrections to the aCORN experiment

The aCORN experiment measures the electron-antineutrino correlation coefficient in free neutron decay. We update the previous aCORN results [G. Darius et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 042502 (2017) and M. T. Hassan et al., Phys. Rev. C 103, 045502 (2021)] to include radiative and recoil corrections to first order, and discuss a key issue in the comparison of results from different -coefficient experimental methods when these effects are considered. The corrected combined result is ‾=−0.10779±0.00125⁢(stat)±0.00134⁢(sys), averaged over the full Fermi neutron beta spectrum. The corresponding corrected result for the ratio of weak coupling constants =/ is =−1.2712±0.0061, and the corresponding value of 0, useful for comparing to proton recoil measurements, is 0=−0.1053±0.0018. This improves agreement with previous -coefficient experiments, in particular the 2020 aSPECT result [M. Beck et al., Phys. Rev. C 101, 055506 (2020)]
