The Grape Cries Out!: Revising and Updating an Anthology of Contemporary Wine Poetry
This project aimed to update an anthology of poetry about wine to make “winespeak” more accessible to the general public. While professional wine critics have a nuanced palette and experience with wine, casual readers of wine poetry can unlock the sensations of wine that may escape them otherwise. In total, over 140 contemporary poetry books were read, primarily focusing on a list of 56 contemporary poets. This project was advised by DePauw Professor of English David Alvarez, as well as Elly McCausland, a professor of English Literature at the University of Ghent and published author of books on Taylor Swift.https://scholarship.depauw.edu/srfposters/1230/thumbnail.jp
Gateway to Business Analytics with Microsoft Excel
Business analytics is a new, expanding subfield with fuzzy edges that overlap into a variety of other established disciplines, including economics, econometrics, computer science, data science, finance, statistics, mathematics, and even psychology. Business analytics includes such traditional techniques as regression and data visualization, but also newer methods such as web scraping, big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Its key distinguishing feature is using data to make and communicate business decisions. This textbook utilizes Microsoft Excel to present a mix of topics appropriate to an undergraduate level introduction to business analytics course with an engaging delivery style
“Caring With: Doulas, ethics, and a hierarchy of care” in Recommitting to Reproductive Justice: Care Ethical Perspectives
While pregnancy, motherhood and the lived experience of femininity were the starting point of care ethics, the topic of reproduction has almost disappeared from ethics of care scholarship in recent years. With the changing political climate, with the rise of right-wing political parties around the globe, the early feminist issues around care and reproductive rights require renewed attention. Questions of pregnancy and abortion, of sterilization and contraception, of the distribution of childcare, as well as the domination of heteronormative and patriarchal family structures, are in need of moral and political answers and revitalized resistance. This volume puts the question of sexual and social reproduction again front and center in the field of care ethics. The focus lies on the Black feminist concept of Reproductive Justice. While justice is the aim of any ethics, reproductive justice has always met with innumerable difficulties and faces new challenges today. This volume therefore argues that reproductive justice deserves to be in the spotlight of care ethics. This volume is part I of a two-volume project on Care Ethics, Birthing and Mothering. Volume 17, edited by Amrita Banerjee and Priya Sharma, is the second volume of that project, which focuses on the critical interface between technology, mothering and care ethics. - Summary from publisher for full volum
March 2025 Table of Contents Newsletter - Open Education
The DePauw Libraries believe in Open Education for All. Open Education Week or #OEWeek runs from March 3-7. This week celebration and recognition works to connect hundreds of open educators worldwide to share their passion for open education by showcasing their innovations and collective work with students, technologists, faculty, and other academics. Open Education can encompass anything that positively impacts education and is openly licensed and free to access. Together, we can turn this week into hundreds of open educational resources that build knowledge for people everywhere. We’re showcasing the open education work being done by DePauw faculty members at our Affordability Champions panel discussion on March 5 featuring Sarah Rowley, Nipun Chopra and Humberto Barreto who will present their pedagogical experiences after participating in the Private Academic Library Network’s PALSave Open Education program
FieldSense
FieldSense will address the challenge of classifying American football formations, a complex task given the endless variations in team setups. Recognizing that many modern formations are close variants of foundational designs (Wikipedia contributors), the project will compile a dataset focused on the most common American formations (Wikipedia contributors). This approach ensures that even if a formation has not been explicitly labeled, most cases will resemble the foundational formations found within the American Football League. Leveraging the PyTorch deep learning framework, FieldSense will implement a convolutional neural network (CNN) using transfer learning by fine-tuning a pre-trained ResNet-18 model on custom-labeled images (Masood). Custom fully connected layers will be added to capture the subtle nuances of each formation, while data augmentation techniques, such as random cropping, rotations, horizontal flips, and normalization, will enhance the model\u27s robustness (Shu). The training pipeline will utilize a locally stored dataset organized into dedicated directories for training, validation, and testing, with performance monitored via metrics like accuracy, precision, and recall and further refined through early stopping and model checkpointing
Stock Price Predictor
Stock Price Predictor is a web-based application that provides real-time and historical stock data, along with machine-learning-based stock price predictions. By leveraging financial APIs, deep learning techniques such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, and Linear Regression models, this tool assists users in making data-driven investment decisions. This system retrieves real-time stock data from the Yahoo Finance API and applies predictive models to forecast stock performance. The user interface (UI) is developed using React.js, while the backend is powered by Flask API. The database for historical stock data and user preferences is managed using PostgreSQL. This project serves investors, financial analysts, and students by offering interactive stock trend visualizations and predictive insights. The significance of this project lies in bridging traditional investment strategies with quantitative AI-driven forecasting models
