Research Solutions: Developing Guidance for Roadway Cross-Section Reconfiguration, TR-818, 2025

    No full text
Converting a four-lane road to three lanes with a left-turn center lane has been shown to reduce crashes by up to 47 percent. In addition to improved safety, the reconfiguration allows for physical enhancements such as additional street parking or the installation of bicycle lanes. However, this type of road conversion may not be the best alternative for a community. To inform municipalities that are considering a four- to three-lane conversion or other cross-section reconfiguration, researchers developed guidance for Iowa practitioners focused on the planning, design, and/or implementation of this roadway change. Available in an easy-to-use format, the guidance also presents commonly held misperceptions and myths regarding the conversion

Research Solutions: Designing Bridges for Minimal Maintenance and a Target Service Life, TR-791, 2025

    No full text
A goal of the Iowa DOT, among other DOTs, is to maintain the bridge network in a state of good repair. However, the network’s maintenance needs often exceed available funding and resources and, therefore, minimizing maintenance needs is highly desirable. In response DOTs have started requiring durable designs with service lives of 100 years or more. These designs have corresponding durability plans assessing the bridge components’ abilities to withstand the expected exposure conditions and deterioration mechanisms. However, a recent NCHRP report showed that the median age of bridge replacement is approximately 53 years, indicating that bridges designed for longer service lives maybe over-designed and opportunities for cost-savings exist. The objective of this study is to implement bridge designs that require minimal or no maintenance for 50 years, which will help the Iowa DOT further optimize its bridge investments and provide relief to maintenance forces and funding. The objective will be realized by analyzing bridge maintenance records to identify the maintenance activities that are most frequently required and are most costly to Iowa transportation agencies. Structural and material design concepts or post-construction preplanned treatments that eliminate or minimize the identified maintenance needs will be developed based on review of other state DOT practices and WJE’s significant experience as a durability design consultant for numerous 100-year service life design-build projects The designs’ performance and cost-effectiveness will be validated by service life modeling and life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) and designs lacking sufficient performance data for the analysis will be identified as candidates for further research. WJE will coordinate with the TAC to select two designs for laboratory evaluation and provide draft scopes of work. To aid in the implementation of the study’s findings and resulting design recommendations, WJE will provide content for the Iowa DOT Bridge Design Manual and the agency’s Construction Manual as well as an Implementation Plan and a training webinar
