    Research in Progress: Cooperative Research Provides Iowa with Cost-effective Roadside Safety Solutions, TPF-5(533), 2025

    The Midwest Roadside Safety Pooled Fund Program is a collaborative program between state DOTs and the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility (MwRSF) dedicated to sponsoring roadside safety research. The goal of this program is to address the roadside safety needs of state DOTs, solve problems of similar interest, and standardize safety features across state borders. MwRSF and Pooled Fund member states eagerly welcome new members. The goals of the Midwest Roadside Safety Pooled Fund Program include: 1) improving highway safety by making the roadside less hazardous for motorists; 2) designing, developing, and crash testing innovative roadside safety hardware to current impact safety standards, such as the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH); 3) conducting safety performance evaluations of existing roadside features; 4) performing computer simulation modeling of vehicle impacts with roadside hardware and geometric features; and 5) developing roadside safety guidance to aid transportation agencies in improving motorist safety

    Research in Progress: Transforming Traffic Safety Culture within Families and Communities, TPF-5(547), 2025

    This project is a cooperative effort of participating state DOTs and other (traditional and non-traditional) organizations with a vested interest in positively affecting the traffic safety culture. As its third phase, this long-term partnership supports continual evolution and integration through research projects, developed tools, and implementation efforts. Collectively with its last two phases, the efforts completed by this pooled fund continue to develop and deliver tools and services to transform the national, state, and community-level traffic safety culture. The goals of this transformation are to: 1 - Show a measurable shift in values, attitudes, and behaviors related to road safety. To maintain positive changes in culture shifts that must be sustained in traffic safety behavior for all motorized and non-motorized road users. 2 - Recognize and define many different levels of cultural influence in traffic safety and create and implement tools that positively influence a sustainable shift in those cultural beliefs. 3 - Create tools for practitioners that impact culture in their organization and communities. 4 - Provide the framework to influence the driver risk-takers to comply with making safe choices behind the wheel, whether automatically, due to culture shifts, or because of those influencers that one might identify with, such as peers, family, etc. Through continual collaboration, implementing, and trying new approaches, we can significantly improve traffic safety culture to reduce fatalities and serious injuries for all motorized and non-motorized road users

    Research Solutions: Improving Bridge Durability with Iowa-Specific Concrete Modeling, TR-712, 2025

    Recently, Iowa Department of Transportation (IADOT) has sponsored a project (InTrans Project 10-384), Iowa Mass Concrete for Bridge Foundation Study (Shaw et al 2011and2014). In the study, the construction observations and data from the WB I-80 and US 34 Missouri River Bridges, Iowa, were reviewed. The temperature, temperature differential, and cracking potential of these bridges were analyzed using two computer software programs: ConcreteWorks and 4C-Temp&Stress. The research indicates that Concrete Works, currently free to public, is much easier to use than the 4C-Temp&Stress computer program and capable of predicting the general trend of thermal development of mass concrete elements (focused on structural elements with a least dimension of 6.5 feet or less). The model results from Concrete Works can be used to assist in designing and optimizing mass concrete mix proportions, construction sequences, and temperature control plan. The InTrans Project 10384 also indicates that although user-friendly, some features in the Concrete Works program do not fit Iowa concrete appropriately. For example, some units are in metric system, some default input data (e.g., materials and properties) are different from Iowa mass concrete materials and practice, there is no consideration of cooling pipe systems, the program provides limited temperature output up to 14 days and cracking potential up to 7 days only. The outputs do not provide sufficient information on the degree (e.g., stress-to-strength ratio) or probability of cracking. The software lacks of flexibility of creating new construction methods and editing outputs (Shaw 2012 and Li 2012). This proposed research is to evaluate, modify and adapt the ConcreteWorks software for Iowa's use (and potentially for other states in the US)

    Construction activities disrupt large areas of land which can lead to negative downstream environmental impacts. Stormwater pollution prevention plans are developed by the Iowa DOT to limit the migration of contaminants. A major component of the stormwater pollution prevention plans is the installment of temporary erosion and sediment control practices. This proposed research in the Iowa DOT configured roadside channel at Auburn University – Stormwater Research Facility aims to increase the performance efficiency of rock check dams. The anticipated outcome for the proposed research will result in design modifications that will reduce channel erosion and enhance sediment capture of stormwater runoff
