2025 December 11 - Academic Council Agenda and Minutes
The Academic Council convened on December 11, 2025, under the leadership of Provost Kimberly McCorkle to address routine approvals, curriculum updates, policy changes, and new program proposals. The council endorsed multiple curriculum modifications, including renaming the Advertising minor to Public Relations and Social Media Management, revising graduate program requirements in Criminal Justice & Criminology and Early Childhood Education, removing the GRE requirement for the MPA program, and placing the Sociology M.A. program into inactive status due to sustained low enrollment. Two new graduate certificate programs—in Nonprofit Management and Urban Planning and Regional Development—were presented and approved, each designed to meet workforce demands and strengthen community partnerships.
The meeting also featured an informational session by Dr. Alison Barton on the Center for Teaching Excellence’s efforts to support responsible and effective use of generative AI among faculty and students. Updates included professional development offerings, AI literacy initiatives, and ongoing pilots involving instructional technology. Announcements highlighted new opportunities for community engagement awards, updates on internship expansion efforts, and the upcoming Festival of Ideas. The meeting concluded at 9:25 a.m.*

Considerations Regarding the Accountant Shortage, Accounting Student Recruitment, and Efforts to Mitigate the Ongoing Shortage
The accounting profession is currently facing a well-documented talent shortage that has been building for a number of years. Some of the factors leading to this are fewer students choosing accounting because of higher wages in other careers as well as many CPAs retiring in the coming years. This paper considers the challenges of getting students in the door to accounting and examines the reasons why they are not choosing accounting. It also examines what accounting firms are doing to fight the workforce shortage, gains the perspective of state CPA societies on the 150 hour rule and how it is a barrier to entry, and considers what has already been accomplished and what is currently being done to fix the accountant pipeline issue. All of this information was taken into consideration to form a comprehensive overview of the accounting shortage. Recommendations are provided concerning ways to improve on what is already being done and new tactics that could be implemented to encourage students to consider a career in accounting
