    The Relationship of Physician Associate Student Satisfaction and Academic Performance

    Introduction: Patient and student satisfaction are increasingly important factors in healthcare and higher education, respectively. While satisfaction is important, it may not always correlate directly with outcomes, academic performance, or long-term professional accomplishments. Researchers aim to investigate the relationship between student satisfaction and measures of student success. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data from 215 students over five PA student cohorts for correlations between student satisfaction and academic performance in core clinical medicine courses, program GPA, and PANCE scores. Statistical analysis was performed by data scientists to test for independence and significance. Results: The systems-based clinical medicine course had a statistically significant 4-way correlation between student satisfaction and GPA, individual PANCE score, and course performance. Program satisfaction was inversely correlated with student age, indicating that older students demonstrated less contentment. Conversely, program satisfaction was positively correlated with PANCE performance, suggesting that students who performed well on the PANCE were more satisfied with the program at large. Discussion: The subjectivity of student satisfaction complicates predictions of academic success. Factors such as age, life experience, and program structure can influence student perceptions and expectations. While the systems-based clinical medicine courses favored correlations to PANCE performance, further research is needed to explore the complex relationship between student satisfaction, academic performance, faculty well-being, and the broad applicability of this study’s findings nationally

    City of Lodi Skatepark

    Proposed Lodi Skate Park Skate parks offer a great culture and a safe place for the community members to practice their sport. There are also athletic benefits to skateboarding that allow the community to be more active. Currently, there is one skatepark located near the edge of the City of Lodi with a population of about 70,000, and there is a need for more skate parks. According to the Public Skate Park Guide, there should be one skatepark for approximately every 25,000 residents, and the nearest one is at the edge of town. With limited options - mostly kids - often resort to skating in areas ill-equipped for skating. Residents are better served when skaters have access to facilities so they can skate safely without endangering themselves or others, or harming property. The proposed design includes a brand new pump track and enclosed skating area to practice tricks and techniques. Both skating areas will total 25,000 square feet of skateable surface. This will be the first skatepark of its kind in the Central Valley. Thus, many people from outside of the city will travel to the park, bringing in more revenue to the surrounding areas. In addition to the skate park the project enhances the current park with proposed designs for two shaded rest areas, a bathroom facility, and accessible parking. In addition to providing recreation opportunities for Lodi residents, the skatepark may attract visitors from other areas as well. Sustainability is emphasized throughout the project by using low-impact development principles for stormwater management, evaluating compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act, and considering residents’ uses of the park

    Halo Gravity Traction for Pediatric Scoliosis and Kyphosis

    Halo gravity traction (HGT) is a critical preoperative intervention used to manage severe pediatric spinal deformities like scoliosis and kyphosis, conditions affecting approximately 9 million children worldwide. Severe spinal curvature can compromise thoracic volume, compress abdominal organs, and impair nutrient absorption, often leading to malnutrition and poor physical development in children. HGT mitigates these complications by gradually elongating the spine over a four week period, applying controlled axial tension up to 50% of the patient’s body weight. This reduces surgical risks, improves pulmonary and gastrointestinal function, and enhances overall patient outcomes. In collaboration with Shriners Hospitals for Children, our biomedical engineering team developed an improved modern HGT walker system focused on safety, usability, and clinical precision. The device utilizes telescoping poles with 4 inch spacing between mounting holes, enabling easy height adjustments to accommodate patients over 5\u276 comfortably while maintaining adequate tension. Tension is regulated through a double shackle pulley system integrated with springs in parallel. Furthermore, proximity sensors were added to our traction device to warn patients before potential collisions while on traction, enhancing patient spatial awareness. Our HGT device brings together key biomedical and mechanical engineering principles to create a practical, easy to maintain, and patient-centered design. By redesigning the traditional halo traction setup, we’ve made real improvements in how pediatric spinal deformities are managed—and in reducing the complications that come with them. We also gave careful attention to the look and feel of the device, adding a clean, simple cover that makes it less intimidating and more approachable. Altogether, we believe these updates can make a real difference in both clinical outcomes and the overall patient experience

    Tree Explorers

    Tree Explorers is a College Corps initiative nature walk for Victory Elementary School. Our group focus is to encourage students to learn more about their surroundings and to encourage teachers to enhance outside learning. By providing a dichotomous key, it can help students decipher what type of tree is at their school. In addition to planned nature walk trails, teachers are able to provide a science unit about trees and have students learn fun facts about the trees without the expense of having to commute to a nearby park. Providing this resource to teachers will hopefully encourage them to appreciate nature, have kids de-stress and learn at the same time, and provide a fun activity that teachers can use for their own classrooms. Teachers are encouraged to tailor the activities in their own way and by providing our blueprint it can spark ideas to continue outside learning. At our site, we are specifically partnered with Ampact, a non-profit organization that enhances reading, math and early learning. Our partnership focuses on empowering kids to become even better readers and tutoring them in skills they have not yet mastered. Connecting this nature walk to our service on-site, we have designed bookmarks to highlight students at Victory Elementary School in the importance of learning and to bind the outside activity with something that they can purposely use for their own good. Each bookmark portrays the trees that we have researched at their school and so students can feel more connected to their school community
