    Escape Tiger Lab

    Escape Tiger Lab is a cooperative puzzle game made in the Unity game engine focused on encouraging efficient communication and cooperative problem solving. There are many puzzle games that are entirely single player experiences, so we wanted to make something that requires communicating with another person to complete. The game works by having two players work together: Player one is in charge of controlling the character in the digital game. They can move around and interact with the various puzzle modules placed on the walls of the environment. This player must tell player two what they are seeing and doing so that player two can help them solve the puzzles. Player two has access to a manual that explains how each puzzle works and provides the correct solution given certain conditions. After receiving information from player one about the puzzle module and certain aspects of the environment, they must consult the manual and walk player one through the process of solving the puzzle. The challenge of this game is that the first player cannot see what the second player is looking at and vice versa. To solve all the puzzles and escape the room, both players must quickly and efficiently relay information between each other to find the correct answer to each puzzle module one after the other. Our game takes some inspiration from other cooperative puzzle games, particularly “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes” which follows a similar game-and-manual formula. We wanted to expand on this idea by placing the player in a more active environment where they can move around freely. We also wanted to make the game more atmospheric, adding light horror elements and a looming threat to motivate the players rather than an immediate one

    Developing confidence, developing skills: The perceived effect of professional development on online teaching

    A large body of research has documented weaker student performance in online courses relative to face-to-face courses across multiple outcomes, including grades, course completion, and persistence. These gaps are particularly pronounced for underserved students. In response, colleges and universities have sought to improve the quality of online instruction by providing technology resources, student and faculty technical support, and, the focus of this study, professional development for faculty teaching online. However, despite the increasing popularity of professional development for online instructors, evidence on its effectiveness in shaping faculty practices and confidence remains limited. This study used survey data from 82 faculty at two Southern California community colleges following participation in structured professional development programs designed to improve online teaching. The professional development programs focused on core learning theories and practical strategies for engaging virtual learners. We find that the majority of faculty reported adopting techniques related to the creation of a supportive and welcoming environment, recorded video introductions and lectures, and increased student-student interaction. In addition, instructors reported increased confidence in adopting teaching methods in almost all assessed areas. In technical areas, most respondents reported increased confidence in skills related to building an online course, creating online assignments and materials, and interacting with students. In soft skill areas, most respondents reported increased confidence in skills related to development of a welcoming, equitable online environment. These survey results underscore the critical role of professional development in shaping instructors’ online teaching confidence and practices

    Hirsutella sinensis polysaccharides and Parabacteroides goldsteinii reduce lupus severity in imiquimod-treated mice

    Background The incidence of autoimmune diseases is increasing in developed countries, possibly due to the modern Western diet and lifestyle. We showed earlier that polysaccharides derived from the medicinal fungus Hirsutella sinensis produced anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-obesity effects by modulating the gut microbiota and increasing the abundance of the commensal Parabacteroides goldsteinii in mice fed with a high-fat diet. Methods We examined the effects of the prebiotics, H. sinensis polysaccharides, and probiotic, P. goldsteinii, in a mouse model of imiquimod-induced systemic lupus erythematosus. Results The fungal polysaccharides and P. goldsteinii reduced markers of lupus severity, including the increase of spleen weight, proteinuria, and serum levels of anti-DNA auto-antibodies and signal transducer and activator of transcription 4 (STAT4). Moreover, the polysaccharides and P. goldsteinii improved markers of kidney and liver functions such as creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, glomerulus damage and fibrosis, and serum liver enzymes. However, the prebiotics and probiotics did not produce consistent improvements in gut microbiota composition, colonic histology, or expression of tight junction proteins in colon tissues. Conclusions Our results indicate that H. sinensis polysaccharides and the probiotic P. goldsteinii can reduce lupus markers in imiquimod-treated mice. These prebiotics and probiotics may therefore be added to other interventions conducive of a healthy lifestyle in order to counter autoimmune diseases

    Circadian rhythmicity and human health

    Our modern lifestyle involves irregular eating habits and extended periods spent indoors under artificial lighting. This lifestyle contrasts with the body\u27s circadian rhythms and likely contributes to an increase of chronic diseases worldwide. This special issue on the circadian rhythm contains articles that deepen our understanding of the biological rhythmicity associated with health and disease. Research articles include studies on the effects of light therapy in patients with myocardial infarction and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in Japanese women. Review articles cover the roles of micro-RNAs in colorectal cancer, the influence of light, electromagnetic fields and water on biological rhythms, and the effects of eating patterns on metabolic diseases. These studies and review articles highlight the importance of maintaining circadian rhythms and provide practical tips to improve human health

    Narrative Inquiry into the Socio Economic Integration and Resilience of the Mien Community in the United States

    This qualitative study examined the socioeconomic integration of the Mien community, a refugee minority sometimes overlooked in research and policy discussions, in the United States. Five participants shared their experiences through in-depth interviews and community observations. The study utilizes narrative inquiry and is informed by community cultural wealth and resilience theory. The analysis incorporated restorying, comparative, and performative approaches. The findings suggested that Mien integration depended on intergenerational storytelling, clan-based networks, multilingual skills, and the adaption of traditional practices within U.S. institutions. Community organizations were important for keeping culture alive and filling in the gaps in institutional services by giving people access to resources. This study focused on Mien voices, which help people understand how refugees fit into society in more specific ways than just by their ethnicity. It also showed how cultural assets and resilience techniques changed over time. Implications included the need for culturally responsive policies, targeted community-based support, and further disaggregated research on smaller refugee groups

    Henry Clay Robinette, attended the Delaware Military Academy (1857-1860) and joined the Union Army at the outset of the Civil War. H.C. Robinette fought at the battles of Corinth and Vicksburg (1862) and was later on the General Grant\u27s staff (1864-1865). After the war he was court-martialed for cursing an officer in a barroom brawl (1867)but his father petitioned President Andrew Johnson on his behalf with the result that his sentence was commuted and he was promoted to brevet major for gallant and meritorious services at the Battle of Corinth and the siege of Vicksburg.https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/civil-war/1029/thumbnail.jp
