    Lorem Ipsum Typographic Poster Series

    Lorem Ipsum: the placeholder text every designer knows by heart—familiar yet meaningless, structured yet random. To most, it’s a jumble of Latin-like words, but for designers, it shapes space before content exists. This collection of typographic posters turns it into something more—an exploration of structure, movement, and contrast. Built around Neue Haas Grotesk, they draw from Swiss modernism’s visual clarity and restraint. Asymmetrical grids. Sharp alignment. Negative space doing as much work as the type itself. But order only holds for so long. Some compositions fracture into Constructivist-inspired sharp angles and layered forms, embracing its energy without its rigid functionalism. Others embrace postmodern contrast, where structure bends and color demand attention. Each piece negotiates the space between structure and disorder. Some follow strict grids, with text precisely aligned and controlled. Others challenge that stability—letters tilt, overlap, and scatter, creating movement. Type isn’t just a tool for language here; it is the language. Nodding to Dada, words become visual, expressive, sometimes even nonsensical. I’ve found my design approach mirroring the Dada movement—embracing a rejection of reason. Some compositions break from utility altogether, leaning into chaos for its own sake. It’s a personal shift away from rigid, function-first design toward something more unpredictable, where meaning isn’t just told, but felt. No photos, no illustrations—just type. The variation and depth come purely from its arrangement. Each design strips things down to a few bold colors and deliberate choices. Simplification with impact. Because even Lorem Ipsum, when fragmented and reassembled, can say something new

    Starting Finish

    This series of work derives from my previous junior exhibition series that features the twelve autistic traits in women. For this new series, I wanted to primarily focus on my childhood and create a chronological timeline based on my core memories. The first five years of my life were very difficult and traumatic, and though it was a challenging period, it remains a significant contributing factor to who I have become as an adult and the person I strive to be.. This series continues to be reflections of myself, with each work representing an autistic trait that was undetected by the people in my life at the time. By learning to understand the complexities of my neurodivergence, I decided to showcase them through the expression of art. Despite all the obstacles I faced as a neurodivergent individual, I am at the starting line of my journey, ready to face life’s hurdles with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. My mindset has shifted from simply surviving to striving for growth and reaching far beyond the finish line

    Painted Hognose

    Due to fear and false information, snakes often get a bad reputation for being… Well, snakes. People who are cruel and untrustworthy are sometimes referred to as “snakes” however this is a misrepresentation of a snake’s nature. My first pet snake was a Western Hognose Snake (Heterodon nasicus) that showed me how wonderful and inquisitive snakes truly are. I’ve been caring for snakes for over a decade and it’s a special experience to have an animal that is normally reclusive and fearful to grow to trust and interact with you. Painted Hognose is my homage to these beautiful and misunderstood creatures. Through this artistic and educational display I hope to change the negative view some might have toward snakes and highlight them as living pieces of art. The species I am centering my exhibit around is the Western Hognose Snake. They are known for their distinct pig-like nose and their dramatic defence mechanism of rolling over and playing dead. This cute and feisty snake is commonly kept as a pet in the reptile keeping community and I am modeling my display after a snake breeder’s expo booth. I will feature unique genetic mutations (morphs) that alter the appearance of the hognose through a poster display, stickers, and 3D printed models that I painted. The adorable appearance of the hognose often makes them more approachable to people who have a fear of snakes. I believe education and exposure can inspire curiosity and understanding about animals that are deemed dangerous or lesser

    RoadRunner

    I am Ethan Fontes, a craftsman of both design and coffee, balancing two artistic identities, focusing on visual storytelling and coffee craftsmanship. RoadRunner is where these passions come together, a mobile coffee business that reflects my entrepreneurial spirit and creative journey. More than just a business concept, RoadRunner represents my college experience as a student, designer, and barista. My journey was shaped by constant travel, first as a commuter, then settling in Stockton, just like a trailer that travels and pauses for some time. The map in my design ties RoadRunner to my hometown, grounding it to my history. As a designer earning my BFA, I’ve focused on creating impactful visuals with clear branding, messaging, and a call to action. My experience as a Starbucks Coffee Master grew my appreciation for coffee, from the journey of each bean to the details that shape its final flavor for an amazing connection. RoadRunner was inspired by the need for energy on the road and the hustle in my life. Every aspect from brand identity to customer experience is designed with intention, ensuring that each cup is more than a pick-me-up but a moment to connect. I invite you to experience RoadRunner not only as a coffee business, but also as a fusion of craft and creativity.     Pure Vision Reality (PVR)

    Clothing is always one of my biggest interests, and I enjoy styling outfits that reflect my personal aesthetic. However, with the rise of fast fashion, mass production leads to excessive textile waste and disposable, low-quality clothing. While I love fashion, I want to engage with it in a way that is more sustainable and intentional. Pure Vision Reality (PVR) embraces a grunge-inspired style, with visuals that distort reality, creating eerie, surreal imagery influenced by nature, which reflects a pure vision of our world today. For this series, I focus on creating posters that embody the aesthetic of my clothing brand. In addition, I incorporate hands-on alterations to push my exploration further. I design and screen-print graphics onto dyed patches, upcycle clothing, and machine-sew bags, all of which contribute to the brand’s identity. This approach to upcycling and garment creation embodies the brand as a whole, highlighting the time and effort that go into making clothing and how our reality is distorted by fast fashion. My goal for this project is to step outside my comfort zone and experiment beyond flat design. I challenge myself by working with new artistic media, including screen printing, tie-dye, and sewing, allowing me to merge my passion for fashion with my interest in design. This hands-on approach keeps me engaged throughout the process, making the experience both rewarding and creatively fulfilling

    Investigating the Role of Male Calling in Túngara Frog Courtship within Close-Range Interactions

    Amphibians exhibit diverse reproductive strategies, and acoustic signaling in anuran mating systems is traditionally seen as a mechanism for mate attraction. However, recent observations suggest that male calling may also act as a neuroendocrine trigger to precondition females for oviposition. This study examines whether male túngara frog calls serve only to attract a mate into clasping range or if they also facilitate reproductive synchronization. To address this, we conducted experiments placing male-female pairs in small, isolated breeding enclosures under two conditions: (1) a control group with no additional auditory stimuli and (2) an experimental group exposed to continuous playback of male advertisement calls. Time-lapse photography and behavioral scoring were used to document courtship interactions. Ongoing research will test whether males adjust their calling in response to playback when a female is at close range, providing insight into the potential dual role of advertisement calls in the túngara frog’s courtship

    Investigating the Effects of Evodia rutaecarpa on Caffeine-Infected Water

    Caffeine is an emerging contaminant in waterways, raising concerns about oxidative stress, reproductive issues, and increased mortality in aquatic life. Due to caffeine’s water solubility, it stays within waterways for a long period of time creating hazards for aquatic wildlife. The available treatments for caffeine-polluted water all have drawbacks making large-scale implementation futile as well as necessitating preventative measures. Evodia rutaecarpa, also known as Wu Zhu Yu, is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been used to combat the negative effects of caffeine. Evodiamine, a major constituent of Evodia rutaecarpa, was found to decrease sleep disruptions and erratic behaviors in caffeine-treated mice (Ko et. al., Biomol. Ther. 2018). Planarian worms, Girardia dorotocephala, are a species of flatworms we have used to study the protective effect of E. rutaecarpa on regeneration. In assays with caffeine-treated G. dorotocephala, we measured the rate of regeneration in order to find the small molecule from E. rutaecarpa responsible for caffeine protection, allowing for higher rates of survival and regeneration. Partitions of a commercially available tincture were made: ethyl acetate, chloroform, and the remaining water soluble tincture constituents not soluble in ethyl acetate and chloroform. Caffeine-laced water was treated with each partition and compared to the negative control group (no treatment) and the original tincture (positive control). It was found that ethyl acetate and chloroform partitions had the most stable growth of planaria with the lowest mortality rate. Ethyl acetate and chloroform partitions were then fractionated using silica gel to create four fractions per partition. These fractions are currently being tested. The known molecules will then be identified in the fractions by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. Any novel compounds with bioactivity will be isolated and their structures determined. The most biologically active molecules could be used to reduce the negative effects of caffeine in waterways

    Spider Silk Assembly and Potential Redox Trigger

    Spider silk, possessing incredible properties in strength, toughness, and elasticity, plays an important role in spider locomotion and web construction. Spider silk is stronger than steel and tougher than Kevlar while retaining elasticity. It has the potential to revolutionize a variety of fields, including medicine and engineering, through its synthetic replication and reproduction. Proteomic analysis of dragline silk has identified that it is predominantly composed of major ampullate spidroin proteins 1 and 2 (MaSp1 and MaSp2), along with two cysteine-rich proteins 1 and 4 (CRP1 and CRP4). MaSp1 and CRP4 are important proteins because of their contribution to the characteristic tensile strength and elastic properties of dragline silk. The trigger mechanism in the spinning duct plays an important role in the conversion of the proteins from a liquid to solid form as the silk is extruded from the spider. It is during this transformation that the unique properties of spider silk emerge. Our experiment focuses on a redox trigger as a fundamental mechanism which governs the assembly of spider silk. To test this theory, the formation of disulfide bonds between the N-terminus of MaSp1 and CRP4 were studied under different oxidation and reduction (redox) environments. Utilizing PCR, we amplified cDNAs coding for the N-terminus of MaSp1 and CRP4, and expressed these recombinant proteins in bacteria. To investigate redox as a potential trigger for spider silk assembly, proteins were purified using affinity chromatography, then analyzed by SDS-PAGE, mass spectrometry, and western blot analysis. Taken together, our findings will help advance our understanding of the biochemical mechanisms of spider silk assembly

    Exploring the Microbial Diversity of the Carlson Lab Microbial Library

    The Carlson Lab Microbe Library at the University of the Pacific is home to a diverse library of microbes isolated from soil, algae, as well as marine and aquatic environments from across North America. Environmental samples were ethically collected from Michigan, Puerto Rico, Washington, Florida, and California, capturing a broad range of ecological settings including tropical, temperate, freshwater, coastal, marine, soil, and forested lake habitats. The library contains 27 boxes of approximately 81 cryovials each with many strains duplicated for safe keeping. This presentation will break down the distribution of the microbial library between fungi and bacteria and discuss the various collection sites and diversity plating techniques. This microbial library is the heart of various on-going research projects in the Carlson Lab and has created research opportunities for over 100 undergraduate and 45 high school students over the last two years. These microbes are grown and extracted to build a chemical library. The library is stored in a high-throughput format to expedite screening for anticancer, antibacterial, and antifungal natural products. These microbes are the heart of the broader goal to identify novel compounds for future therapeutic use
