Correlational Analysis between Fat Free Mass and Physical Performance in College Students
PURPOSE:
The objective of this study is to investigate the association between fat free mass (FFM) and physical performance in college students.
METHODS:
Fat free mass (FFM) was evaluated using the BodPod in a sample of 21 male and 12 female students. Various performance metrics were measured, including handgrip strength, aerobic capacity (via VO2max test), anaerobic capacity (peak power and peak force through Wingate test), vertical jump height, and broad jump distance. Spearman correlations were used to evaluate correlations between FFM and performance metrics, stratified by sex where p \u3c 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
RESULTS:
Significant correlations found only in male participants included FFM vs. VO2max (r = 0.6815, p=0.0073), FFM vs. peak power (r = 0.7719, p=0.0248), and FFM vs. peak force (r = 0.5732, p=0.0203) while in female participants, the only significant correlation was FFM vs. peak force (r = 0.6450, p=0.0441). However, after combining the data regardless of sex, FFM showed significant positive correlations with handgrip strength (r = 0.7715, p \u3c 0.0001) and VO2max (r =0.8035, p \u3c 0.0001). FFM also correlated with broad jump distance (r = 0.4806, p \u3c 0.05) and anaerobic capacity (peak force: r = 0.8167, p \u3c 0.0001; relative peak power: r = -0.6246, p \u3c 0.05).
CONCLUSION:
FFM is strongly associated with muscular strength, aerobic, and anaerobic performance, particularly in males. In females, FFM is linked to peak force. These findings highlight sex-specific differences in body composition impacting physical performance and emphasize the importance of FFM for enhancing performance outcomes
Effect of Vitamin D supplementation on the prevention of respiratory tract infections: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis
Background: Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin mainly responsible for calcium absorption and bone mineralization. Vitamin D also has been suggested to prevent respiratory tract infections (RTIs) through studies of COVID-19 cases which hinted relations between vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency to the severity of RTIs.
Purpose: To evaluate the overall effect of Vitamin D supplementation on the prevention of respiratory tract infections (RTIs) and serum 25(OH)D concentration before and after intervention based on clinical studies published from 2009 to 2019, in order to propose interventions that can reduce the risk, severity, and mortality of RTIs.
Methods: Clinical trials were searched from 7 major scientific databases. 164 studies were imported into Covidence and 13 duplicates were identified. Data from 18 trials (n = 11,183) were included to assess the effect of vitamin D supplementation on RTIs incidence. A random-effects model was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence.
Results: Regarding the respiratory tract infections outcome, the pooled OR for RTIs prevention was 0.74 (95% CI: 0.60–0.92, p \u3c 0.01), indicating a statistically significant reduction in RTIs incidence with vitamin D supplementation. Subgroup analysis demonstrated notable protective effects in participants with baseline vitamin D deficiency (OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.25–0.72). However, results varied across studies, with some studies reporting no significant benefit. Moderate heterogeneity was observed (I² = 57%, p = 0.002), reflecting variability in study populations, dosing regimens, and durations.
Conclusions: Vitamin D supplementation significantly reduces the risk of RTIs, particularly in Vitamin D deficient populations. Findings suggest that addressing vitamin D deficiency through supplementation could be an effective public health strategy to reduce RTIs incidence. Further studies are needed to determine optimal dosing and target populations
The Early History of the People\u27s Republic of China from a Personal Perspective
The Chinese Communist Party established the People’s Republic of China in 1949, a new government after it defeated the Nationalists during the Civil War. With this new government came new ideals that aimed at establishing a classless society through nationalization and collectivization. Thus, the means of production were nationalized, and the land was redistributed to peasants, eliminating the exploitative social classes. This huge socioeconomic change affected many Chinese families, including mine. This study will focus on the aftermath wealthy Chinese families experienced following the seizure of their wealth and the consequences on families it has led to today. The study will be based on an examination of academic research on the economy, a philosophical analysis of the Maoist ideology, an exploration of the early history of the People’s Republic of China, and an investigation of China’s social hierarchy, as well as an analysis of family history including familial lineages and lore. The paper will investigate the consequences of this early socioeconomic transformation in the 1950s for Chinese families and people at the time
Upregulation of pro-apoptotic genes by the accumulation of unfolded proteins
The unfolded protein response (UPR) is a complex cellular reaction to a buildup of excess unfolded and/or misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum. One branch of the UPR is the PERK-pathway, which occurs when the chaperone BiP associates with unfolded proteins which leads to the activation of PERK. PERK then phosphorylates eIF2ɑ, leading to inhibition of global protein synthesis. The focus of our project last year were the genes GADD34 and CReP. BiP, GADD34, and CReP gene expression were measured using in-situ hybridization in unstressed embryos and embryos treated with thapsigargin to induce ER stress. The difference in the expression of BiP during unstressed and stressed conditions was used as a positive control for our experiment. First, the embryos were collected, and then 24 hpf embryos were put through either no treatment or thapsigargin treatment for either 4 or 24 hours, fixed with paraformaldehyde, and analyzed by in-situ hybridization. A large increase in expression of BiP, our positive control, was observed throughout the embryos upon stress induction. GADD34 expression also increased following stress, primarily in the head of the embryos. CReP showed increased gene expression mainly in the tails of embryos treated for 4 hours and in the heads of embryos treated for 24 hours. In addition, GADD34 and CReP may have protective effects against apoptosis, as is seen when cell death is reduced when GADD34 is knocked out. As such, we now plan to study the effects on the main apoptotic signals during ER stress, which are p63, PUMA, and CHOP. The in-situ hybridizations for the activity of these genes, probes must be designed, which was the main goal of our project this year. This project is a 2D single-player farming game developed using Unity and C#, designed to provide a relaxing and immersive open-world experience centered on farming, exploration, and community-building.Players begin their journey on a small plot of land, basic tools and starter seeds to aid them in their initial plant, harvest and tending to their crops gradually transforming their farm through care and patience. With a wide variety of crops each with their own unique growth cycle, players are encouraged to plan ahead, manage their time and allocate resources wisely. The core design principle of the game is player freedom, allowing the players to progress at their own pace without restrictions or penalties for how the player spends their time. The game includes a day-night cycle and a seasonal calendar with each season bringing visual changes, season crops, and weather, a common mechanic in farming games in order to depict real-world scenarios. Unity was used to develop the 2D system and interface while C# was used to provide the flexibility essential for implementing gameplay mechanics, grid information, and object interaction. These mechanics include inventory management, time progression, grid farming, and interacting with the environment. The pixel-art style was chosen for its nostalgic charm and aesthetic appeal for creating objects with pixels, since pixel art is often associated with the genre of farming games. Due to its simplicity, it allowed for the ability to make quick game assets, character animations, UI icons, and environment tiles. When combined with soothing in-game audio, the visual style contributes to creating an immersive and comforting experience for players to enjoy
Roarance Parker Sinclair (RPS): Smart Budgeting and Expense Tracking
Managing personal finances can be overwhelming, especially for individuals unfamiliar with budgeting, expense tracking, or financial planning. Without proper guidance, people may struggle to allocate savings effectively, leading to financial instability. To address this issue, we are developing Roarance Parker Sinclair (RPS), a web-based financial management application that provides users with a centralized platform to track earnings, monitor expenses, set goals, and receive AI-driven financial insights.
RPS offers a comprehensive suite of features to simplify financial management. The dashboard page provides an overview of bank balances, categorized spending, and outstanding loans, giving users a clear picture of their financial standing. The budgeting page enables users to allocate funds into categories such as bills, groceries, necessities, and leisure, ensuring mindful spending. To further assist users, RPS includes an interest rate calculator to estimate loan costs based on amount, interest rate, and time frame. The calculator also provides average payment costs to help users break down large expenses into manageable installments. The receipt-saving feature allows users to digitally store and organize transactions, simplifying record-keeping. Another key component of RPS is its AI-powered financial assistant, which provides users with real-time insights, spending trend analysis, and financial recommendations. The assistant leverages Anthropic’s Claude API to process user queries and deliver intelligent financial guidance. This integration showcases how advanced large language models can enhance financial management by offering responsive and personalized assistance.
The final product will serve as an intuitive financial companion, integrating budgeting tools, intelligent recommendations, and a user-friendly interface to accommodate a broad user base. RPS is a proof of concept for how AI-driven financial applications can empower users to take control of their finances through personalized insights, improved financial literacy, and streamlined money management
