    No full text
Synopsis: Applying and reproducing knowledge doctrines are two major themes in teaching and learning exercises in laboratory technique courses. Data reviewed in this study examines the correlation of applying and reproducing knowledge. Exercises included occlusion wax-ups pertaining to application and esthetic wax-ups pertaining to reproduction of knowledge. Methods: Student performances in five consecutive graduating classes from 2013 to 2017 over five year period were observed and association between the two exercises measured. Mean scores in individual and combined groups were assessed. Data showed trends for high and low performers in three modes: combined, occlusion and esthetic performances analyzed. Results: Overall combined groups performed similarly with 0.35% mean difference and insignificant in both occlusion and esthetic wax-up exercises. In combined data, high performing students had less disparity between occlusion and esthetic performances in comparison to low performers which performed higher in reproducing exercises. Conclusion: This study confirms beginners have different learning modes, majority of learners are able to perform similarly in various modes however, low performers experienced more containment and were able to perform higher in a specific mode. These findings provide evidence that regular assessments in defining learning modes can identify any shortcomings early on in dental curricula

Zachary Baylasy, Jesse Goodson, Ryan Le, Krish Patel Mable Barron Encounters College: Friends, Fun, and the Future Abstract: This project consisted of two aspects. Assisting the teachers with an integral aspect of their curriculum and informing the students that attending University is more than attending lectures and exams. With a combination of detailed presentations and interactive activities, the session targeted to spark future career pathways and higher education. The workshop started with a spelling bee method, which is to provide confidence in academic skills and support language development. A trivia game, Kahoot, was also utilized to initiate these young students towards the dentistry field and to inspire them to aspire to be in college through a low-pressure, enjoyable arrangement. A significant feature of this period was a conducted slideshow presenting many college clubs such as intramural sports, Car Club, and Pre-Dental Society. Such examples were utilized to display that college is not only a place for just lectures and exams, but it is also about following your passions, advancing career skills, and building community. The students were largely enthusiastic about clubs related to gaming, which arranges events within the campus library of University of the Pacific. By displaying these beneficial opportunities, this workshop helped the future youth to envision an exciting and well rounded anticipated college experience, while encouraging them to both explore extracurricular and academic paths

Rapid Changes in Coloration in Adult Field Crickets in Response to Climate Change

    No full text
The animal kingdom displays a diverse array of colors. The ability to express different types of melanin-based coloration may be crucial for animals’ adaptation to climate change. For example, insects can adopt lighter coloration to limit heat absorption from solar radiation (‘thermal melanism hypothesis’). Other environmental factors, such as water availability and predation risk, may also affect melanism or dark coloration. Cuticular melanin plays a role in many adaptive responses in insects, such as reducing water permeability, so darker insects can exhibit reduced rates of water loss during drought (‘water conservation hypothesis’). Insects also rely on crypsis or camouflage to reduce predation risk, with dark environments potentially increasing melanization and light environments reducing it (‘crypsis hypothesis’). Here, we used a factorial design to manipulate temperature (20℃ or 30℃), water availability (with or without drinking water), and environmental color (white or black background) during early adulthood in the variable field cricket (Gryllus lineaticeps), which naturally exhibits a range of coloration, from pale tan to red to black. We measured melanization in the crickets\u27 wing pads to test the relative importance of temperature, water availability, and crypsis in the plasticity of coloration, as well as potential interactive effects between these factors. Preliminary results indicate strong support for the thermal melanism hypothesis, no support for the crypsis hypothesis, and contradictory support for the water conservation hypothesis. Our research will clarify how plasticity in coloration may respond to ongoing climate change and urbanization, which continue to alter temperature, water availability, and predation risk worldwide

The Sex-Specific Effects of Microplastics and Phthalates Within- and Across-Generations in an Insect

Microplastics (MPs; plastic particles \u3c5mm) have been found in virtually every ecosystem and even in most human tissues. In addition to their toxicity, MPs release harmful phthalate ester (PAE) plasticizers, which make plastics more flexible and durable. Yet, we lack a comprehensive understanding of the combined effects of MPs and PAEs, which may entail additive or synergistic costs to important traits, such as reproduction. Because environments exhibit long-term contamination by MPs and PAEs, it is also important to characterize their transgenerational effects– that is, how exposure to one or both parents has carryover effects that influence their offspring. Here, we used a factorial experimental design and fed four diets (control [no additives], MPs added, PAE added, and both MPs + PAE added) to breeding pairs of the variable field cricket (Gryllus lineaticeps). We then determined within-generation effects on reproduction (mating success and egg production) and transgenerational effects on offspring (hatching success, hatchling starvation resistance, and hatchling developmental rate). Our study will be the first to test for the sex-specific effects of MPs and PAEs on fitness-related traits within- and across-generations

Analysis of Various Functional Groups on Flavone Derivatives for Triplex DNA Binding

    No full text
Triplex DNA is a unique three-stranded DNA structure that can form both intramolecularly and intermolecularly. Intramolecular triplexes occur when a DNA strand folds onto itself, forming Hoogsteen hydrogen bonds, while intermolecular triplexes form when an external third strand, known as a triplex-forming oligonucleotide (TFO), binds to a duplex through Hoogsteen interactions. Interest in triplex DNA has grown due to its potential applications in antigene therapy, where TFOs can selectively bind to genomic regions to regulate gene expression. This offers a promising approach for treating genetic diseases and cancer. Previously, our group found that 5-substituted quercetin derivatives effectively bind to triplex DNA with minimal impact on duplex DNA stability. Building on this work, I focused on synthesizing different flavone derivatives with various functional groups attached to the flavone backbone to investigate their effects on triplex DNA stabilization. Using thermal denaturation monitored by UV spectroscopy, I will present how these modifications influence triplex stability

    No full text
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects approximately 1% of the global population, leading to joint inflammation, pain, and progressive disability. In this study, we applied a computational pipeline to analyze a publicly available scRNA-seq dataset of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from RA patients and healthy controls (Binvignat et al., 2024). Our goal was to identify transcriptional signatures associated with disease activity and explore the potential of gene expression features to distinguish between disease states

Temas y Tecnicas en Los Insolitos Peces Gato

    No full text
The film, Los insólitos peces gato directed by Claudia Sainte-Luce highlights stages in life along with hardships and situations in which many individuals encounter. The topics of mental and physical health are greatly portrayed within each character. There is a representation of identity in which each individual’s unique characteristics and experiences tie into Claudia’s identity and role within the struggling family facing many barriers. Each character has their own battles, which all tie back to the family structure. Claudia is the missing pillar within the family, her character mentally and physically supports the family in a sense of unity in which she escapes her own solitude and finds her purpose in life. The same patterns are seen within many families, in the text Imágenes de La Familia En El Cine Latinoamericano Actual by Luis Garcia Orso, family structure within a nuclear family is greatly touched upon, John Waldon goes deeper into analyzing the absence of a father figure within his text, Screening Rupture in El Sueño De Lú and Los Insólitos Peces Gato. The main focus are the barriers and battles in which each individual has to overcome along with the finding of solutions within the family relationships

    VTerrarium

    No full text
The VTerrarium is a compact game system designed in the shape of a terrarium, offering an interactive and immersive idle game experience. Inspired by virtual aquariums and classic Tamagotchi-style games, the VTerrarium enables players to collect virtual creatures, make them happy to earn money, and purchase more creatures and items for their environment. The system\u27s unique feature is its ability to detect real-world conditions through temperature and light sensors that affect the in-game environment and creature happiness based on their preferences. The VTerrarium features two screens—on the top and front—creating the illusion of a 3D environment, with the top screen primarily serving UI functions (like feeding) and the front screen for viewing. The most unique aspect of this project is the integration of hardware and software components. A Miniature Computer runs the Open Source Godot Game Engine for rendering and game logic, while an Arduino Nano processes analog and digital sensor inputs through embedded code. This data is sent directly to the Godot Engine via a custom C# extension that translates serial bus information into usable global data in the engine and applies complex processing. The Arduino processes data from sensors, such as a photoresistor and temperature detector, allowing the VTerrarium to detect light levels and temperature. These factors directly impact creature behavior, influencing their mood and money generation within the game. The backbone of our software is the Open Source Godot Game Engine, processing sensor input and rendering the virtual environment. Each creature has their own state machine that uses the creature\u27s data to make decisions. A built-in mood processing system tracks creature happiness, with happier creatures generating more money. Additional software components support selective viewport rendering for an intuitive UI and easy user experience. Users can interact with their virtual aquarium through several menus: Inventory shows all creatures in a grid view with detailed stats available when clicked; Accessories can be accessed from the creature detail view to customize their appearance; Feeding allows users to feed creatures with food from their inventory; and the Store allows users to buy packs of random creatures, with more expensive packs having better chances for rarer rewards. The VTerrarium is designed with expandability in mind. Future developments may introduce more sensors, advanced AI-driven ecosystems, and additional gameplay mechanics such as speech recognition, fluid simulation, or deeper environmental simulation. The current iteration prioritizes a complete project by focusing on user interactions rather than a deep ecosystem. With its unique combination of hardware integration, modular software design, and idle gaming mechanics, the VTerrarium represents an innovative approach to physical-digital interaction. It provides a scalable framework for interactive simulations, virtual pet experiences, and novel gaming concepts within a self-contained system
