What\u27s My Research? with Drs. Shelly Gulati, Sebastian Dzillas, and Mehdi Khazaeli
Please join us on October 23, 2025, from 3pm-4pm in the DeRosa University Center, 211 A&B, for What’s My Research? featuring Drs. Shelly Gulati and Sebastian Dziallas (School of Engineering and Computer Science), and Dr. Mehdi Khazaeli (Assistant Provost for Research and Sponsored Programs/School of Engineering and Computer Science). Their presentations will focus around two recently awarded National Science Foundation grants. S-STEM, which provides scholarships to first year students and intends to increase the number of low-income, academically talented students that graduate in civil engineering or engineering management fields that address a strategic national and regional need, and enter a life-changing career and EPIIC, which aims to strengthen the region’s capacity to contribute effectively to megaregional, state-wide, and national innovation efforts

Obsidian Edge
Obsidian Edge is a custom-built game engine developed to support rapid creation of 2D card games while deepening familiarity with rendering systems, low-level architecture, and modular engine design. Implemented in C++, the engine features a custom 2D renderer built with GLFW (an open source, multi-platform library for OpenGL development), a high-performance UI system powered by Dear ImGui, audio playback via the Miniaudio library, and fully handmade digital visual assets. The system supports essential card-game operations including, dealing, shuffling, and discarding. This provides a streamlined foundation for prototyping and implementing card-based mechanics.
Its lightweight, modular architecture enables efficient iteration and allows individual subsystems to be extended or replaced with minimal friction. This work also highlights the challenges and design considerations encountered while constructing an engine from the ground up, including rendering performance constraints, asset-management strategies, component organization,and coding for modularity and scalability or for scenarios that could exist. Future development will focus on integrating 3D rendering capabilities, expanding multi-platform support, and introducing scripting through additional programming languages. These improvements aim to increase flexibility and improve usability for larger or more complex projects

Whether a child has a physical, cognitive, or invisible disability, there are many situations in which they aren’t given equal access to participate in team sports, individual sports, or physical activity in general
Pacific Athletics Support Building
The Pacific Athletics Support Building project addresses a critical need for enhanced facilities supporting the softball, aquatics, and soccer programs at the University of the Pacific. Currently, the absence of permanent locker rooms, restrooms, and concessions negatively impacts athletes, referees, and visitors. Portable restrooms currently in use and limited gathering spaces fail to provide a professional, welcoming environment for teams and visitors. In response to a request from Pacific Athletics, this project aims to improve functionality, accessibility, and sustainability by designing a 2,500-square-foot support building and an adjacent tailgating area, to provide a more engaging game-day experience while fostering school spirit.
As part of this project, our team undertook a comprehensive site design to integrate the new facility into the existing athletic complex. Grading and drainage plans were developed for accessibility and stormwater management and ADA compliance. Structural designs were created for the support building, ensuring safety and durability. The water resources plan focused on capturing stormwater runoff using sustainable Low Impact Development (LID) strategies, and water and sewer flow compliant with the California Plumbing Code. The geotechnical engineering design provides appropriate footing dimensions for the support columns as well as the slab design for the tailgating area.
In addition to engineering design, sustainability played a key role in the project. The facility incorporates sustainable materials and efficient site drainage to reduce environmental impact. Elements of this project align with Envision and LEED rating systems, supporting the university’s efforts in advancing sustainability.
Through detailed planning, calculations, and CAD modeling, our team successfully delivered a functional, sustainable, and community-driven facility design. This project will provide modern amenities, enhance the game-day experience, and contribute to the long-term development of Pacific Athletics
Comic Booth
Hello, my name is Payton McDougall. I’m a graphic designer and illustrator working towards my Bachelor’s degree, who just so happens to be a writing hobbyist in my spare time. For my senior project, I combined my love of graphic design and illustration into a comic campaign series using an independent study I’ve been working on since fall of 2024 called “Dreamer’s Paradox”. Since I specialize in using my design abilities for advertising/branding and entertainment, the campaign features a variety of potential deliverables, mock-ups, comic pages, concept pages, and a themed booth for marketing. “Dreamer’s Paradox” is a tie between my roots as a designer and as an obsessed comic book enthusiast. I’ve always loved flipping through pages of whatever visual novels I could get my hands on, not just to evaluate the literal story, but how the pages are organized and stylized to convey emotion and invoke interest. As a result, storytelling has been a key base layer in all my design work. This evolution has helped guide each of my projects into growing from a simple concept to an abundantly layered narrative
Cuộc Đời (A Lifetime)
My series, “Cuộc Đời” or “A Lifetime” captures the difficulties I faced as a student during the past few years. I was met with an uphill battle to graduate while dealing with many personal, financial, and health problems. While working on my series, I felt a lot of longing to be free from everything, while feeling content with where I am in life. This year, I challenged myself with learning how to stretch my own canvases, using a new medium, oil paint, and working large (6 ft x 4ft). Unexpectedly, I came across another challenge; my dominant hand was significantly inflamed. The only remedy to help heal my wrist was to not use it at all. I resolved this by using my left hand. With all of these challenges in mind, I persevered. Just like life, setbacks encourage me to move forward. On an everyday basis, I am physically and mentally overloaded with work and school. Somehow, I need to keep my composure and calm amongst the chaos. In my paintings, I make expressive and deliberate, yet delicate, marks that create movement throughout the composition. The colorful palette I use and the energy of each stroke I make juxtapose the heavy feelings of anxiety, pain, and agony I experience daily. I want the difficulties to end so badly, but I know that everything is working in my favor in the long run if I just keep going. My art is my therapy. Every project I have done encouraged me to continue my artist journey. Doing art is the reason why I continue to be creative, fun, and have a positive mindset. Without the support of my professors, advisors, my friends, and my family, I would not be where I am today. I express my gratitude to anyone who has come across my life, as they influenced me as an artist no matter where I go. “Đi đường nào thì cũng tới đó” - “It might take a little longer, but you’ll get there to where you’ll need to go no matter which path you take”.
