    Smart Irrigation System

    No full text
When growing plants, whether that be at an industrial scale or at home, one of the most important and time consuming aspects is making sure that the growing environment is suitable from start to finish as a plant grows. Monitoring these conditions is a vital aspect of plant growth. A second aspect is that of water wastage. In most instances, plants and crops are overwatered due to the difficulty in properly gauging how much water is actually needed at a given point in time. Our senior project aims to create a home system that will be able to efficiently monitor environmental conditions and directly intervene to handle water irrigation and temperature control, while giving feedback on factors that would still need to be addressed by the user. The Smart Irrigation Planter Box is a small planting plot that will monitor the status and quality of the growing conditions for the plant. It will use multiple sensors to detect temperature, humidity, PH levels, CO2, and soil moisture. The sensors will be utilized by the system to automatically water the grow bed when it is needed rather than at set time intervals. This allows the system to minimize any water wastage that would normally occur. The temperature control is implemented through an automatic shade that will open and close based on the temperature and humidity values. This will allow the system to maintain a more general temperature for the growing environment. These conditions are communicated to the end user in two ways. The first is a physical LCD display on the system that displays the basic information and sensor values. The second is a web application that returns these values alongside additional details about the system, such as if the soil moisture is too high or low, or if the shade is open or closed. For the CO2 sensor and ph sensor, it gives additional info and recommendations for potential actions to fix issues that could potentially impact these environmental factors

Automated Pill Dispenser, Splitter, and Crusher

    No full text
Patients often face challenges adhering to medication schedules, particularly when they are required to split or crush pills. Existing pill splitters and crushers in the market typically require significant force to operate, making them difficult to use for individuals with limited strength, such as the elderly or those with physical disabilities. Additionally, patients prescribed multiple medications or varying doses may struggle to organize and track their medications effectively, leading to missed doses and potentially severe health consequences. Our device aims to address these issues by combining pill organizing, crushing, and splitting functionalities into a single, user-friendly product. This innovation is designed to improve medication adherence and patient experience by simplifying the process of pill preparation. The device is particularly beneficial for patients who need to split pills for reduced dosages on specific days, children who are unable to swallow pills, and pets that require medication to be mixed with food. Additionally, the device helps individuals with multiple medications stay organized and avoid confusion, which can have adverse health effects if not appropriately managed. The target market for this device includes patients with complex medication regimens, caregivers of young children or elderly individuals, pet owners, and people who need to adjust their dosages. Current market options include manual pill splitters and crushers, as well as automated pill dispensers, but none combine all the features required to improve compliance and usability in a single device. For instance, the HERO Automated Pill Organizer offers pill organization but lacks crushing or splitting capabilities. At the same time, the MedaCube Automatic Pill Dispenser, priced at $1,799, provides medication dispensing but does not organize or crush pills. Other devices, such as the WindTrace Automatic Pill Dispenser and generic Apex pill cutters, focus on either organizing, dispensing, or splitting pills. Still, they do not integrate all these features into a convenient, battery-powered solution. Our device is designed to meet the growing demand for manual and automated pill management solutions. By combining pill splitting, crushing, and organizing with automated release times, it offers a comprehensive solution not currently available in the market. It is battery-powered for ease of use and portability, and its design ensures it can be easily cleaned and stored in a standard kitchen space. The device addresses the needs of diverse customer groups, including individuals with physical limitations, those managing multiple medications, and caregivers looking for an efficient and safe way to administer medication

    Poor Elizabeth

Music has always been my greatest source of inspiration. I am especially drawn to alternative bands, working to craft visual identities that amplify their energy, ethos, and unique sound. My design approach fuses bold aesthetics with raw emotion, transforming music into striking, unforgettable visuals that deeply resonate with audiences. Each project I take on is more than just a design—it’s a visual extension of the artist’s identity, an invitation for listeners to step into their world. One of my most compelling pieces is the album cover for Poor Elizabeth, which captures a fusion of noir aesthetics and gritty, alternative style. The deep red background, combined with a distressed illustration of a handgun and a vintage-style woman, creates a cinematic, pulp-fiction-inspired visual language. This imagery conveys themes of danger, mystery, and rebellion, perfectly reflecting the band’s sound and lyrical essence. Beyond album covers, I aim to create immersive visual narratives that strengthen an artist’s brand across all platforms. From posters and merchandise to social media graphics, my work ensures that an artist’s message is not only heard but also seen, felt, and remembered. I believe that aesthetics in music are just as important as the music itself—both work together to shape an artist’s identity and impact. Through my designs, I strive to bridge the gap between sound and sight, crafting visuals that don’t just accompany music but enhance and define it. Music fuels my creativity, and design allows me to bring that passion to life

Large Scale Culturing of Actinomycete Secondary Metabolites and Extraction

    No full text
Aquatic actinomycetes are evolutionarily distinct from their terrestrial counterparts and devote a large portion of their genome to the synthesis of diverse secondary metabolites (Schorn et. al., Microbiology 2016). Actinomycetes flourish in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems with aquatic species producing unique natural products. Over half of all approved drugs come from natural products with 55% of all known antibiotics percent coming directly from natural products or inspiring the synthetic warhead (Newman and Cragg, J. Nat. Prod. 2020). The Carlson Lab actinomycete strain collection is derived from unique ecosystems from across North America. Environmental samples are plated on a variety of media to produce diversity plates, and isolates are replated on new A1 agar plates. These are then cultivated in liquid media, A1 or AIDI, and stored cryogenically in glycerol at -80°C. To isolate potential bioactive compounds, XAD16 resin is added to culture broth. The resin is then rinsed with acetone to release the compounds. Acetone is removed through evaporation in vacuo to yield a crude extract that is further partitioned using ethyl acetate. This material is then fractionated using silica gel chromatography to produce 4 fractions. This step allows to separate the extract into different fractions based on their polarity. These fractions are evaluated for various biological activities including antibiotic, antifungal, and anticancer activity

How Limited English Proficiency Affects the Health of Latin American Immigrants in the United States

    No full text
According to the National Library of Medicine, Latinx people make up the largest ethnic minoritized group in the United States (2023). About 25.3 million people in the United States have Limited English Proficiency, and of those, over 60% are Spanish speaking (Nathenson et al., 2016) LEP has been shown to affect many aspects of health care, including access to medical care, status of health, accessibility to health services, communication between patient and provider, quality of care, and satisfaction with care (Flores, 2020). Latin American immigrants often encounter systemic discrimination in the health-care system due to language barriers and race. As a result, they do not seek proper medical care for their physical and mental ailments. Through the sociological theories of Critical Race Theory and Acculturation Theory, this study will examine how systemic racism in the health-care system affects the health of Latin American immigrants and how negative experiences with health care providers due to LEP can result in feelings of inferiority
