How does digital reflective practice in textile design education relate to creativity?
This article reports the results of a multiple case study that sought to understand how textile design students engaged in digital reflective practice (DRP) and how such engagement related to creativity. Theoretically informed by symbolic interactionism and constructivism, the study incorporated the views of textile design teachers, heads of departments and students in four different higher education institutions in Pakistan. The findings suggest that the use of digital tools for reflection in textile design studio courses can enhance students’ creativity, self-consciousness or awareness, and understanding of tasks and concept development. The creative process also entailed new possibilities of expression, presentation and meaning making by revisiting their work
Impacts of tourism development in developing countries: a Namibian perspective
Tourism development has been viewed in terms of its contribution to economic growth. Thus, most developing countries have declared tourism as an important economic sector. Tourism is also envisaged to provide economic benefits to communities through the provision of employment. Due to the increase in tourist numbers, environmental changes to the natural resources have been a cause for concern to nations. Tourism stakeholders have incorporated environmental issues in their tourism development plans to ensure that the tourism products are sustainable, and communities are benefitting. For the communities to benefit from tourism development, the analysis of socio-cultural impacts has become of paramount importance. Governments have emphasised increasing tourism numbers to influence economic growth. The local community would then benefit from the tourism increase through multiplier effects. Thus, the chapter explores the impacts of tourism development in developing countries with a focus on Namibia as a developing country
A new integrated agent-based framework for designing building emergency evacuation: a BIM approach
Today, safety control is considered one of the most important pillars of building construction processes due to maintaining security in major incidents such as fire, earthquake, and flood, and placing a basis of mutual trust between builders and residents for building design and construction. The evacuation process is a key aspect of safety control in case of an emergency such as a fire. This study develops a new integrated agent-based framework for designing building emergency evacuation by using Building Information Model (BIM). Three main steps of the framework include data collection, building model development, and evacuation simulation with a combination of Revit-MassMotion. The methodology is demonstrated through its application to a real case of a multi-story commercial building located in Iran. The building model is simulated through three scenarios with a different number of floors (i.e., one, two, and three floors). In each scenario, the safety of evacuation is evaluated for three designs of stairs in the building. The results show the best performance of the building evacuation in all scenarios can be achieved when two individual stairs are designed for each floor. Other influential factors including the maximum density, vision time, and agent count are more acceptable compared to other design factors. These parameters can also be used to design a control system by using smart conceptual models based on both decision tree and auto-work break structure methods

Gut microbiota regulates circadian oscillation in hepatic ischemia–reperfusion injury-induced cognitive impairment by interfering with hippocampal lipid metabolism in mice
Background: Hepatic ischemia–reperfusion injury (HIRI) is a common complication of liver surgery, which can lead to
extrahepatic metabolic disorders, such as cognitive impairment. Recent observations have emphasized the critical effects of gut microbial metabolites in regulating the development of liver injury. Herein, we investigated the potential contribution of gut microbiota to HIRI-related cognitive impairment.
Methods: HIRI murine models were established by ischemia–reperfusion surgery in the morning (ZT0, 08:00) and evening (ZT12, 20:00), respectively. Antibiotic-induced pseudo-germ-free mice were gavaged with fecal bacteria of the HIRI
models. Behavioral test was used to assess cognitive function. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metabolomics were used for microbial and hippocampal analysis.
Results: Our results established that cognitive impairment caused by HIRI underwent diurnal oscillations; HIRI mice performed poorly on the Y-maze test and the novel object preference test when surgery occurred in the evening compared with the morning. In addition, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from the ZT12-HIRI was demonstrated to induce cognitive impairment behavior. The specific composition and metabolites of gut microbiota were analyzed between the ZT0-HIRI and
ZT12-HIRI, and bioinformatic analysis showed that the differential fecal metabolites were significantly enriched in lipid metabolism pathways. After FMT, the hippocampal lipid metabolome between the P-ZT0-HIRI and P-ZT12-HIRI groups was analyzed to reveal a series of lipid molecules with significant differences.
Conclusions: Our findings indicate that gut microbiota are involved in circadian differences of HIRI-related cognitive impairment by affecting hippocampal lipid metabolism
An Investigation into the Primary and Subharmonic Resonances of the Swing Equation
A study is conducted to obtain a deeper insight into the primary and subharmonic resonances of the swing equation. The primary resonance, which can result in increased oscillatory responses, voltage instability, and potential system collapse, happens when the external disturbance frequency coincides with the natural frequency of the system. Subharmonic resonance occurs when the disturbance frequency is an integer fraction of the natural frequency, leading to low-frequency oscillations and possible equipment damage. The purpose of this study is to provide an extension of the existing literature of the effects of primary resonance and further provide a thorough understanding of subharmonic resonance on the stability of a certain power system paradigm. Motivated by the rich nonlinear dynamical behaviour exhibited by this evergreen model, analytical and numerical techniques are employed to examine the underlying principles, creating an efficient control solution for this resonant-related problem. The main objective of this research is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the primary and subharmonic resonances considering the dynamical and bifurcational behaviour of the underlying swing equation, whereby both analytical and numerical techniques are employed, allowing for an identification of certain precursors to chaos that may lead and cater for the safe operation of practical problems
Towards Deep Learning Based Access Control using Hyperledger-Fabric Blockchain for the Internet of Things.
The rapid expansion of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has resulted in significant progress and developments in various sectors, such as smart healthcare, self-driving vehicles, smart banking, smart home, Industry 4.0, etc. Traditional centralised access control methods are inadequate to deploy in decentralised IoT networks. Although the existing Blockchain-based access control approaches provide a better way of managing access permission for IoT systems, they are ineffective in addressing critical security gaps and preventing unauthorised access while detecting malicious anomalies. To address these two challenges in a single platform, in this paper, we propose a novel approach towards a deep-learning-based authorisation solution that is deployed within the Hyperledger-Fabric (HLF) private Blockchain. Our approach allows smart-contract to define attribute-based access control policies augmented with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model, which can effectively identify and isolate malicious anomalies and prevent unauthorised access from malicious devices. We run experiments to evaluate our platform in terms of security and performance, and our results show positive indicators essential for addressing security issues in decentralised IoT networks
